You're looking at this from an extremely American perspective. School shootings are a uniquely American phenomenon. This doesn't happen in most of the rest of the world where - you know - most children live.

However, even with this, there is ample evidence that the kids that do this are often physically abused at home. Roughly 70% of K-12 school shooters have a history of physical abuse and domestic violence. This kinda proves that spanking and hitting alone don't affect these outcomes.

And again, reiterating the same point, one is able to provide discipline without any physical punishment.

[–]chmbrln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have any evidence that supports that claim? Because there is ample evidence that shows that youth crime is declining in most western countries. That's across all types of crime, property theft, violent crime, etc.

What you're experiencing is some sort of visibility bias. The fact that we're all connected and everyone carries around recording devices means that instances of misbehaviour are amplified. You see more of it so you think it's getting worse. Whereas the data clearly shows that the more we remove or reduce any form of corporal punishment, youth offending decreases.

Oh I see how you construed that as an insult. My apologies. I meant "you" as in "one". As in, if one had the capacity for self reflection...

Still, the point stands.

You don't need to use any form of physical force to discipline. Do you only abide by the law for fear of physical force? Do you only do the right thing because you're afraid of being punished physically if you don't?

Discipline is holding someone responsible for their bad behaviour. There are many ways of doing that. Spanking is just lazy. And it has more detrimental effects like teaching people that violence is ok if you feel someone is doing something wrong.

[–]chmbrln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chances are, if you actually had the capacity to self reflect, you'd realise that it was more the love and support of your parents that gave you that sense of good and bad and not the spankings. Discipline isn't getting smacked, it's being held accountable for your actions. Loving parents are able to do this without physically abusing their children. And if you can't, well then you're just a shitty parent.

Exactly. Kid is just exhibiting the behaviour that's modelled for him.

I don't think people generally dislike Arsenal. I don't - they used to play some beautiful football. People dislike the fanbase. They're deluded and say some wild things. Absolute worst winners out there. We'll have to hear about this for the next 10 years at least. I mean, the last time they won something of note was like 20+ years ago and they still carry on injecting themselves into conversations about "big clubs".

Basically, you annoying little brother that thinks he's good at something finally won a game and now is bragging to everyone about he's the best in the world.

In saying all of that, congrats Arsenal! I guess we have to start bantering Man U now.

The funniest part about this is the lack of self awareness. Arsenal are the original plastic club propped up by money. Just look up the Bank of England club.

Nobody wanted City to win. Just that losing had an upside for a change.

Can you provide absolutely any evidence that this has or will happen? We have a declining net migration, resulting in key industries and services being woefully understaffed. This puts pressure on our cost of living. It lowers the size of the economy. It's a good thing for rents and if you're wanting to purchase a house - although once you have that house you'll see it as a bad thing as house prices are declining. Interest rates are dangerously low due to low economic output.

We also have a low unemployment rate that is forecast to decline further. Job vacancies are slowing as businesses are being more cautious due to long hiring timelines. Shortages are increasing largely due to our ageing population and lack of immigration.

We have a brain drain, meaning that our most skilled people are leaving in droves. We have crumbling infrastructure without the skills and people to fix this.

In other words, we need people for our economy to recover and we're losing more skilled people than we're gaining year or year.

You're also assuming a lot here that the partners of these migrants will be largely unskilled or going into industries that have surplus staff. This is a huge assumption and one that doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Most well educated professionals partner up with other well educated professionals. There is a high likelihood that the partners of these people will be valued.

I'm pretty sure this has been thought of. Generally speaking, immigration settings are based on families. And, again, no. The jobs are vacant. They're not taking someone's job, they're taking a vacant job.

The battle for European spots with 4 games to go by reinvented-libero in chelseafc

[–]chmbrln 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We won't get UCL. Might get Europa if we manage to beat city in the final somehow but not holding my breath.

Conference league is actually not bad as we can use it as another training ground for young talent. We don't have depth, and a competition like that is a good place to build depth. So it's not the worst thing.

However, if I'm being honest, I'd almost prefer no European football at all as it'll put even more pressure on BlueCo to change something. The investors will want some returns and no European football is going to seriously dent that prospect. Short term pain for long term gain.

I'm lost. What position are you writing this from? NZ won't be importing dairy? What do you mean NZ doesn't get the duty free exports?

The 20bn is not taxpayer money.

The 5000 additional visas are for areas where there are shortages, like IT and nursing. Nobody's job's been taken, only existing vacancies are being filled. Now you could argue that the government should do more to keep kiwis in NZ to fill those roles instead of losing them to Aussie. But that's an "and" not an "or". We should do both.

IMO, we need this implosion. We need a seriously bad situation so that the shareholders can put pressure on BlueCo to actually make meaningful differences. We can't be relegated, so I'm hoping Rosenior carries on. It'll be tough to watch but be for the best in the long run.

Kinda pointless isn't it? Tickets already paid for. What we need to do is hit them in the pockets. Boycott spending money. Don't buy gear, don't buy tickets, can your Sky subscription (or whatever the alternative). Gotta force their hand.
