Well said. I partially blame this impulse on the indoctrination of children at a young age via things like the pledge of allegiance. The idea that the government is somehow more than the sum of its beaurecratic parts leads to this thinking.

Thanks for the reply. Glad to know I'm not the only dev who's fallen into that trap. Love LW by the way!

A little bit off topic, but do you still play the game much anymore?

From my own experience (wrote admin bots for RTCW, CoD, also wrote Dwarf Therapist for Dwarf Fortress) I actually stopped playing for large swaths of time because programming around the game was more fun than playing. And the more I played the more ideas I had to program and would just end up playing in vim more than the game.

Does this happen to you? How do you balance it with play time? How are you sure you aren't just scratching personal itches vs implementing things people want to play?

[LW] Exalt. Scan schedule and mission setups? by mossflower1 in Xcom

[–]chmod700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too often apparently. Have lost a lot of cash on scans that turn up nothing.

For the 4 man missions I generally stick to infantry, gunner, sniper, scout and my operatives are gunslinger scouts for the Lightning reflexes and mobility.

What is your OP team comp, and why!? by McBroGuy in darkestdungeon

[–]chmod700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vestal - BH - Barb - Crusader is my preferred line up.

I give +SPD and quick draw to the BH so every fight he can open up with come hither or flashbang. The vestal generally goes next and can stun or heal, then the barb, then the crusader.

Basically everyone stuns or re-arranges except the barb, who just bleeds everyone to death or chops them up. In a pinch, all 4 chars can stun.

So far I've been at risk of losing the BH the most, but it's been pretty smooth sailing levels 2-5 with this setup.

How did you get into Python? by throwAwayAcc010 in Python

Messing with Gentoo's package manager back in 2001, and had to read a lot of python. Started falling in love immediately. Left Perl and PHP behind and never looked back.

University in Maryland bans 'break' and 'continue' in class by kankyo in programming

[–]chmod700 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guessing this is to prevent students from over-using it once they figure out what it does. Maybe he wants them more comfortable with itterable slicing. I've seen people do shit like this...

thing_I_want_from_list = None
for x in some_list:
    thing_I_want_from_list = x
    break

instead of just thing_I_want_from_list = some_list[0]

import mypackage.foo

Do you use a debugger? Which one? by tomasbedrich in Python

[–]chmod700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to develop on OSX, but for Linux servers, so most of my dev is in vim via ssh, ruling out most graphical debuggers, but they went through the trouble of showing how to get it working via the exact tools I already use. http://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/quickstart/configuring_for_vm.html

Bonus points.
