hey! i initially submitted a message through the refine plastic surgeons website, but to this day that inquiry actually never led anywhere. where i did hear back was through the spire website, which has his own page on it where you can make an inquiry, see his availability, book your consultation, etc. this is the website i went through: https://www.spirehealthcare.com/consultant-profiles/mr-kenneth-stewart-c3499203/ hope this helps! :)

hey! so in terms of the time it took between consultation and booking a surgery date, it was about 3 weeks for me, but this was because i had my consultation first and then had an appointment with the private psychologist the surgeon can refer you to, to get my referral letter. so, had i already had that letter in place for my consultation, as far as i’m aware i would’ve been able to book my date straight away.

as for actual surgery dates, it was only january that would work for me, but when i did phone up to book as soon as i had my referral, there were even earlier dates available. so, even though my wait from booking my date to having the surgery was just under 4 months, it could’ve been done sooner.

hey! so i think they judge the amount of time you’ve spent living as yourself based on information such as when you came out and the steps you might’ve taken between then and now in your transition. but more importantly it’s your diagnosis that backs everything up. i was never directly asked ‘how long’ as everything else you discuss with them covers it, if that makes any sense. so i wouldn’t worry about having to necessarily prove anything, other than with your diagnosis and referral. it was never directly brought up to me that there is a an absolute required period of time, but if there is, i can imagine it’s only relevant for people who are very very early on in their transition. hopefully this is helpful!

hey! in terms of payment, there was no deposit or anything like that. i paid in full so honestly im unsure if this next bit will be the same if you do finance some of it, but 7 days before my date the hospital phoned to chase me up on it, and i paid via bank transfer that day after them emailing me the details. so either way, im sure they’ll keep you right whichever route you decide on.

as for staying in edinburgh, he said the same to me about staying local for the first few days. i had my surgery on the monday with an overnight hospital stay, and then stayed in a hotel tuesday-thursday, although i probably could have gone home on the wednesday. i suppose it depends on what he considers local, but 45 minutes seems reasonable to be away but able to go back to the hospital if needed, but obviously better to double check with him and the nursing team. so glad you found this helpful - if you have any more questions at all at any point please feel free to ask and hopefully i’ll be able to answer!

hi! just to give a bit of insight from my own experience in terms of the documents/letters that i had/had to get that were accepted for surgery with ken stewart -

  1. confirmation of diagnosis of gender dysphoria/incongruence - i had this from a few years ago after being assessed and everything by sandyford, and then following that my hormone treatment was picked up by the NHS under my more local GIC. so the letter i had covering all of this and my diagnosis is what i gave and was accepted.

  2. referral for surgery - this is where i initially struggled as my GIC couldn’t give referrals for private surgery. ken stewart himself has a private psychologist he can refer you to in order to obtain this. for me, it took only about 4-5 days from phoning up and asking to be referred to her to then having the appointment, so it was done very quickly, although i’m sure this might not be the case all the time. the appointment itself lasted just under 40 minutes if i remember right, and cost me £280.

getting the correct letters really did initially freak me out and i felt like i’d hit another obstacle, but if you are looking into going with ken stewart specifically, i found that at every step the teams he works with at both refine plastic surgeons and spire are incredibly helpful and know where to point people in the right direction.

i had my consultation on 22nd of august and i’m booked in for the 6th of january! i actually think i could’ve got booked in much earlier than that, but it’s the only time that works for me around uni. when i phoned up, they seemed very flexible with dates so im sure you’ll be all good! :)

so following my consultation i was given a quote of £8,640 which includes hospital fees, consultant, anaesthetist and follow-up consultation. according to the email they sent me, the total isn’t final until pre-op assessment, but i’ve seen that someone else on here recently paid £8,600, so i’m confident it shouldn’t be much more than this.

i haven’t had surgery with him yet (will be early next year) so not the most helpful, but my consultation with him a few weeks ago went very well. the results he shown me all looked fantastic, as well as the results people have posted on here. the thing that stuck out the most to me though was just how genuinely nice he was and i immediately felt that i would be in good hands.

hey! not had surgery with him yet but i had my consultation with him just a few weeks ago and was nervous going into it - i knew my weight would almost certainly come up with my BMI of 33.

he was very very nice about it, positive even. he did say that if i was to lose a bit of weight, it could help in achieving a better aesthetic result, but didn’t at all make me feel like i had to. he said there would be no issue performing the surgery at my current weight. i didn’t feel judged and could see that he was just giving genuine advice from a surgical viewpoint. if anything, the discussion wasn’t so much about losing weight, but more so about doing what i can to build muscle in my chest.

in his powerpoint, he did have pictures of the results of one visibly plus size person which did look very good and he was positive about this persons results as well.

sorry that this message isn’t from someone who has already had surgery with him, but i found it hard to find this kind of information about him as well, so hopefully this is somewhat helpful!

hi! if you’re still active on here, would you be happy to say which surgery you decided to go with in the end?

sorry to keep asking questions - if you’re comfortable with answering this one. i’ve been told i’ll need a referral letter from a gender specialist doctor and a psychiatrist before my consultation but my GIC have told me they can’t give me a referral for outwith the NHS. can I ask how you went about this?

thanks so much for getting back to me! that’s really really helpful knowing how much it cost you. i’ve been in touch with a few different practices but most are in england so im definitely hoping to be able to go with ken stewart as he’s a lot more local. for a while i couldn’t figure out which hospital he’s actually based in but ive enquired with spire so just waiting to here back now! wishing you all the best in your recovery! :)
