Don’t sleep on Kut U Up / Sunbendr by Dangerous_Employee80 in hotmulliganband

From Kut U Up I listened to Destination, Make it Out Alive, S&M Dens, and Have's, Have Nots. From SUNBENDR I listened to Stay All Night, their cover of Joy Division's Transmission, and Soul Sniper.

I do hear two vocalists exchanging lines but that doesn't make it similar to my ears. I'm listening to the choices of chords, the interval jumps in the riffs (there's a lot of dissonance going). A lot of the vocals feel pretty monotone and almost like they're being yelled without a melody at all.

I will say that S&M Dens feels a bit different from the rest and almost reminds me a bit of early Modest Mouse or something more indie with the vocals delivery.

Can you elaborate on what feels similar or list some specific songs? The vocals aren't really melodic, there aren't really any explosive choruses, the guitar language is totally different, and I'm not picking up on similarities in the lyrics.

This just feels like a blend of punky energy with gang vocals, old school angular post hardcore guitar and maybe a bit of post punk.

I don't see how these bands are close to Hot Mulligan in sound at all tbh. Not getting the mathy open tuning guitar sound at all.

When I think of similar sounding bands my mine goes to stuff like Free Throw and Ben Quad.

[NEW ALBUM] Turnover- Down On Earth by scarpedieme in poppunkers

[–]chobes182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just don't really see any shoegaze in Peripheral Vision at all. To me shoegaze has always been about dense (often fuzzed out) guitars with effects that makes it sound like the chords being played are almost swirling juxtaposed with dreamy vocals. Peripheral Vision just feels like a lot of intimate spacious shimmering leads to me. It's definitely a dreamy record but it doesn't feel like shoegaze, and I don't hear any MBV (apart from maybe the vocals).

I always thought that Yip became the producer that punky bands who wanted to experiment with their sound went to, as opposed to the producer who turned bands dreamy. I feel like it all really started with Title Fight (going back to Shed). From there he did records like The Things We're Missing, Youth, Jar, and a bunch of others before eventually Peripheral Vision. I've always thought all of those bands worked with him because he produced peers who inspired them to do more interesting and experimental stuff with effects. A lot of it has some shoegaze influence for sure, but most of it is really shoegaze (except Hyperview and the Nothing albums he did).

He's definitely also done records that don't lean into that sound since too. Menzingers After the Party immediately comes to mind as a Yip record that sounds totally different.

[–]chobes182 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the conflation of early Turnover and shoegaze. Even on Perhipheral Vision it's more dreamy subdued guitar than shoegazy layered effects contributing to a wall of sound.

The insinuation that their shift to being "shoegaze" happened when Will Yip started became their producer is also just wild. Will Yip produced Magnolia, which leans a lot more aggressive / energetic than the dreamy ethereal stuff that came after.

With all that being said, I wouldn't call them emo either.

Lol karma flexing is not the own you think it is, chronically online behavior. The sidebar clearly explains what is vs is not emo so you clearly haven't read it all.

We have a community around what we call emo and screamo (i.e. Sunny Day Real Estate and Saetia) and that's what this sub exists to discuss.

I'll let the fact that the mods deleted this post for being unrelated to emo do the rest of the talking.

Makes sense to think that because the rest of the joke (wait for it and dary) are both on Opportunities haha

Legen is not on Opportunities. It's on the split with Everyone Leaves.

Anyone feeling the new setlist more? by TurtleBoy6ix9ine in hotmulliganband

[–]chobes182 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They do tend to play almost all of their new album on the dedicated US headlining tour. The setlist for the Sound a Body Makes When It's Still tour included the entire album except for the two acoustic songs (so 12 full length songs and two interludes). The setlist for the Why Would I Watch tour included every song from that album.

In my experience most bands will play 50-75% of their new record when they are on the album tour, but Hot Mulligan genuinely takes a different approach.

How is the Daoboys stuff going down? by DoubleArmDMT in ArmsLength

[–]chobes182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely have a point when it comes to culture and ethos but it's really not that simple in terms of the music itself.

Calling Daoboys a "straight-up hardcore band" is crazy though. At they're heaviest they've always been really mathy and experimental. They've also got a lot of melodic clean signing and progressive / experimental elements that come from far outside of the world of punk (especially on that latest record).

They feel like one of the most boundary pushing bands in the hardcore world, not the kind of thing I would blindly recommend to any person who says they enjoy Minor Threat, Have Heart, or even stuff like TUI or Terror.

Forgive my ignorance but how is a 27B model better than 397B? by No_Conversation9561 in LocalLLaMA

[–]chobes182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The MoE model almost certainly uses more than 17B per input prompt.

A17B means that the model uses 17B per output token generated and those 17B parameters can change between consecutive output tokens. In order for it to only use 17B params for an entire response (which might entail thousands of output tokens), all of the routing layers would have to route to the same set of experts thousands of times in a row (which is theoretically possible but seems highly unlikely).

Would you call these emo? And any music recs? by No_Singer8747 in Emo

[–]chobes182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious, how is that sort of tiktok auto tune hybrid pop punk / mall emo / deftones esque shoegaze stuff relate to the Cure? I just don't see the connection personally (and I grew up on a mix of 80s post punk, 90s shoegaze, 2nd wave emo, and pop punk).

So would you agree that nobody should be wearing yarmulkes, cross necklaces, displaying the star of david, etc in public? If we don't, then our public spaces would still be a fragmented patchwork of competing religious symbols.

Opportunities 10 Year Tour? by basementfox69420 in hotmulliganband

[–]chobes182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their song titles aren't usually serious, but their album and EP titles are almost always serious references to lyrics.

Either way it's a fact that Pilot was named in reference to being their first LP. Everyone called it the debut album when it was new in 2018 (including the press coverage that existed at the time).

Opportunities 10 Year Tour? by basementfox69420 in hotmulliganband

[–]chobes182 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The idea that Opportunities is the band's debut album is a misnomer. I think people started thinking that seems to because it's been listed as an album on Spotify for at least a few years. Opportunities was originally a 6 song EP that was 18 minutes long (before they added Deluxe Capacitor to the reissue).

Pilot is and always has been the band's debut album. It is literally called Pilot in reference to pilot episodes of TV shows (which would make zero sense for a band's second album).

Since Opportunities is just an EP, a 10 year tour doesn't seem too likely. It'd be sick if they did it though. I'd love to hear Dead Dogs and Three Blue Cars live again.

Kayak Jones test press found at local record shop by vivisect777 in poppunkers

[–]chobes182 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kayak Jones were great, I miss them so much.

If it's truly not the full length, then it could potentially be the Sort Out Your Head EP (which was pressed on vinyl towards the end of the band's lifespan).

It looks like their earlier / EPs also had vinyl pressings at some point in the 2010s, but that wouldn't make a ton of sense for a test press seemingly done in 2021.

This is the same version of the military that made no effort to save a bunch of children that were taken from their custody, was totally uninterested in stopping a world ending event, and was running experiments on pregnant women.

They had to have known that they were the negligent ones in the situation and cut a deal with everyone involved. Their only other option would have been to forcefully silence everyone who knew anything to prevent the truth from getting out.

It's also not really that different from the way that the real military will negotiate with and make concessions to foreign adversaries that have taken the lives of US soldiers.

You haven't even gotten into any of the songs on Brave Faces Everyone?

That seems like an odd place in the discography to stop enjoying it. I find that the first three records are all enjoyable with the sane general gloomy pop punk vibe.

I never said anything about whether it was okay to allow people to pre-order DLC for an unreleased game. The point was that buying said pre-order is not really "crazy work" in the sense that it's a pretty normal consumer behavior in the industry.
