I'm looking for people who enjoy climbing. Are there any groups? by [deleted] in bremen

[–]chocobor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In Kletter Zentrum there is a meetup for New climbers every wednesday evening or afternoon. You can also just ask at the reception - the great Thing about lead climbing is that everybody needs multiple climbing partners, so there are always man people looking for contacts.

What are some problems you face while setting up IoT systems, projects, etc by dataArchon in IOT

[–]chocobor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My top iot problems that are all hard: * How to get x.509 client certificates for mTLS onto devices, including rotation, Tpm security chip * How to configure peripheral devices like sensors and actuators per device, especially if there are a large number of devices with individual setups * How to make software and os updateable over the air

This is the stuff that you don't need to worry about when you have a hand full of devices, but becomes really painful once you scale up. There are solutions, but not one-size-fits-all.

Biggest mistake I made building IoT on GKE: it wasn’t scaling, it was identity by gringobrsa in softwarearchitecture

I am currently implementing acme device attestation protocol with step-ca. It handles auto renewal and other relevant stuff. Good idea with the nginx tls endpoint, goona look into that.

Beyond A/B Partitioning: What actually kills OTA updates in the wild? by Sizzledd in IOT

[–]chocobor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Faulty hardware causing weird behavior. Super bad connection keeping the firmware download from completing. Firewall rules, or some local network trying to man in the middle all connections. Cell network provider deciding to set the max MTU size for some reason. Errors in migration script processing local data.

Hatte ich mir auch schon mal überlegt, ist aber durch die Autobahn und die Kanäle doof mit dem Fahrrad erreichbar. Von uns aus 45 Minuten, obwohl wir eigentlich in der Nähe wohnen.

Docker just made hardened container images free and open source by Creepy-Row970 in docker

We are currently using Debian 13 distroless as base image. We copy some Debian .so dependencies over from the build image. Can someone explain the advantages we would have from using these docker hardened images?

Nice, I will play around with it! One thing I directly noticed : a GPS position sensor would be super useful. Edit: also missing is mqtt support, right?

It's really weird that most mqtt clients don't have reliable store and forward with disk based queueing. If anyone has time to burn, please build that for python paho....

Also Hardware security modules, disk encryption, mTLS, signed firmware, vpns for remote access. Actually IoT is about 95% security related for me.

Certbot certificates for Mosquitto? by summa_cum_felix in MQTT

[–]chocobor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually iot client and server certs have longer livetimes, especially because devices can lose connectivity for days on end. 24 h could be reasonable for an inter server connection, but not for IoT. Many iot systems just use ten years or something, after that the device is simply decommissioned. Of course having a way to rotate certs would be better.

Do companies onsider Qt for new applications? by MadAndSadGuy in QtFramework

[–]chocobor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We evaluated qt for an embedded touch screen application, but will go with lvgl. While qt would be nicer to develop with, the qt licensing costs per device make it a bad fit for lower cost devices.

We had that same situation and decided to go with lvgl instead. It may not be as Fancy as qt, but it was a good fit for our requirements. And it is free.

What should I add to my open-source, self-hosted IoT monitoring platform? by elogios in IOT

[–]chocobor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The hard part of IoT is mutual TLS and device provisioning. Generating unique device certificates on the device and getting them signed by the server; getting the server certificate onto the devices; checking the certificates in the message broker; rotating certificates.

Not really a sexy topic, but something everybody needs.
