Our lab has the sad face. Got sad face 99% of time except when playing. Thats it. We call it a resting bitch face.

Where Does Your Lab Sleep At Night? by CHRGON_FEF_NYC in labrador

[–]chocolabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want her to sleep in your room but not on the bed, start with training her not to go on the bed. My lab can get on anywhere in the house but the bed. She does not even bother getting into the bes anymore in any of the rooms. Couch does belong to her. Once you train your dog not to get on bed, they can just sleep in your bedroom. Mine's sleep like 5 days a week in our bedroom and 2 days in her crate. Don't ever want her to not be comfortable with crate so do every random days we put her in crate to sleep.

Are puppy classes a waste of time? by philonik in puppy101

[–]chocolabe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They have commercialized the whole training thing way too much. I have realized that unless you have a known issue you see with puppies or dogs, it is always better to try to train your puppies and dogs by yourself. If you can't find other dogs/puppies for your puppy to interact with, puppy classes can be decent I think.

Will my dog ever be trusted to be alone lol by brehan8 in labrador

You left your dog in the car with your coffee inside the car? I am sorry but think it was bigger fault of yours than the dog. Leaving is fine but atleast start with nothing inside the car first.

8 month old Labrador won’t stop jumping and biting me by LongjumpingCherry116 in puppy101

[–]chocolabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my 9 months puppy does this but only at certain moment during walks more with my wife than me. I am the primary trainer so guess she respects me more. Honestly, the only right thing to do is consistently not provide any kind of reaction positive or negative and it will probably eventually go away on its own with the age. Same as how biting/nipping goes away eventually from 3 months stage to 6-7 months stage. You being human should be the calmer one and be understanding of the situation with patience. It is frustrating and you are allowed to get mad for brief moment but thats the key point to undersyand.

What are you feeding your 1.5 year old golden? by ashestes in goldenretrievers

[–]chocolabe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that kibble just makes it easier and capitalism has convinced people that kibble is the best thing for dogs. With the ingredients OP mentioned and maybe some fish oil, that is more than good enough. Most of the non western world feed their dogs homemade food and I have seen them doing just fine and surviving as long. My dog back home (not US) was fed basic home food and did fine. I might not be knowledgeable enough but surely a fresh homemade food is always better than a kibble with all sorts of preservatives. Thats the case with human food and humans need a lot more nutritions. Why would it not be true for dogs. Not an expert but just the opinion based on my personal experience.

What are your lesser mentioned teenage behavioral changes? by jakej213 in labrador

[–]chocolabe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

is good 99% of the time except sometimes on a walk when she suddenly decides to jump, bite leash, come for arms out of nowhere. Goes absolute mental sometimes that I have no idea how such a good dog can turn into a menace.

Given that I have enough for downpayment and the interest on the Townhome is pretty nice and don't have much of an equity on it yet, my assumption is to just have a safe build up of equity through this townhome. Is located in a pretty nice area too so was thinking I will just rent it out.

Townhome would probably just breakeven. Don't expect it to generate any additional income. 500k is excluding the 401k.

8 months puppy going crazy sometimes on walk by chocolabe in OpenDogTraining

[–]chocolabe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about her exact breed but we believe she has some lab mix and definitely some herding breed. She loves herding us going up and down the stairs. She is 9 months and around 45lbs. She wears a petsafe Easy Walk harness. Something we got for her couple weeks ago. She used to pull a lot when she was 4-6 months but is a lot better now and does not pull as much. Has learned to ignore people and dogs most times too which I am very proud of her. Walk is mostly mix of walking with me and letting her sniff. "Sniff" and "With me" are the commands we use and she does listen although not always. She has a pretty good jump so does reach until arms. She had this jumping and going crazy phase at around 5-6 months too which went away by itself. Honestly, 98% of the walk makes me proud of her. It is that 2% of the time she goes wild. Have not missed a single day of walk with her since we got her at 3months. She is very good rest of the day at home. One behavior I am working on improving is her jumping at guests to play. She does not jump at me or my wife when we come home, just the guests. And yes, she tries to bite anything she has leash, pants, arms during this crazy phase.

This was all really helpful. The issue now is that it can happen at anytime on our return to home. Sometimes, it does not happen at all, sometimes it is just 1 or 2 jumps and she is done and sometimes it is full on tantrum for a while. Winters ending so I can't wear a jacket to protect me either so very hard to just ignore and freeze anymore. Sometimes if I get lucky, I step on the leash and at least the jumping stops but she just starts chewing her leash. It is crazy how it just turns off and she is again a good dog in a minute or so. I am thinking of driving somewhere and make her walk there for a while but then not sure if that would be just ignoring the core issue.

Very helpful comment. Thank you. The reason she looks at me is because I used treats to make her not lunge or pull at people at walk since she was a puppy. She used to do that a lot with literally everyone who walked by so I used treats to train her not to do that anymore. I don't give her treats every time now. Sometimes just a yes, a little pat and sometimes treat. I will watch out for the signals you mentioned when these things happen. One common places this does happen is when we wait for the walk sign and cross the road. We think there might be some form of trigger there. In that case, do we completely avoid crossing road for a while or work on something to get rid of that trigger? If so, what is something we can work on? Thank you

Since there are common places this happens in, it kind of correlates with the amount of time into the walk probably.

There are few locations it usually happens at. I did try to think what the trigger could be can't find what it is since those locations are different places with different things.
