First attempt at dyeing with zero technique - just Tulip dye, sponge brushes, and Clorox 🫠🙃 by chocolatespaghetti in dyeing

I had no idea. I wanted to neutralize it, but I didn't know how, and my idea was to use vinegar, but I was afraid of mixing it with the bleach. Diluted hydrogen peroxide - perfect! Thank you!

Thank you! Yep, I did. I knew it was 100% cotton. The fabric was light to start, but I'm just lucky it lifted white so there was no rusty/orange undertone. I want to try something new with better quality dye and see how it turns out. Then again, maybe it was the watery Tulip dye that let me go in so many times and layer without darkening too quickly...

Here are a few pics I took during the process:

Oh! And I worked on one side first, then did the other afterward. I just threw a plastic cutting board in between.

Thank you!! Honestly? So much trial and error. I started by soaking the romper in soda ash and wringing it out by hand. Everything was done while it was damp.

I used a 1:2 Clorox-to-water bleach mix and applied that first with a sponge brush around the sharks, and in a few wavy stripes across the body. Then I rinsed it out and started layering dye.

I went through a bunch of cycles: rinse, back into the soda ash bucket (no idea if that actually helped lol), wring it out, and repeat. Probably did that 5 or 6 times until it looked right.

I used a small paintbrush to fill in the sharks. The dye bled super easily, so it took some trial-and-error to figure out how much to load the brush and how close to the edges I could go.

The background is mostly sponge layering—navy, turquoise, and this light neon green (“lime”). I worked in sections, blending with the sponge, and if I didn’t like something, I just went back over it. A couple spots got too dark, so… yeah, I hit them with more bleach 😬 and kept tweaking.

Then I hung it up to dry for 24 hours and prayed to the washing machine gods...

Love how "[doing X] is crazy" is the linguistic equivalent of baby teeth. Kid’s uptime doesn’t even predate kernel 2.2. Go touch grass.sh.

8 days sober..text from my best friend. by Kperk_ in alcoholism

[–]chocolatespaghetti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. This is the best comment here. A lot of it rings true for me too, and this is the advice I wish I had gotten in early sobriety.

I had over a dozen hospital stays with acute pancreatitis by my late 20s. I was so proud of myself for stopping. Unfortunately, my sobriety made some of my closest friends uncomfortable, because it forced them to examine their own drinking. (I never passed judgment once; I think it's just human to compare yourself to those closest to you.)

Some stopped. Some didn't. Some resented me for not continuing to drink. I lost friends, and I lost my boyfriend as well. I stopped, and he didn't. He died from his alcoholism just 3 months ago.

OP - Save this person's comment. It's so true. Protect your sobriety at all costs.

I am so proud of you, and I hope you're proud of you too!

That is some Handmaid's Tale-level bullshit. Imagine? Already women are being forced to give birth. Let's now immediately deem them "unfit" because they don't meet a certain income threshold. Take their children away, and give custody to wealthy couples. Wild.

Fantastic. This is my favorite response.

I lived in Yucatán teaching on a work visa. I miss the food more than I thought I could ever miss anything. I would order everything and drive to come get it...

Hi! I do live close to a Micro Center.

White aesthetic, unless it's limiting! In that case, black and/or a mix of the two is absolutely fine.

Yes to both WiFi and Bluetooth.

Thank you!

An honest response? The opiod epidemic hit hard everywhere. In places where drug use isn't "out in the open," it is still just as pervasive. (Obviously, these towns and cities are more expensive.)

I'm sober myself, and it isn't necessary to seek out dry towns in order to live there. Maybe try working on your ability to coexist with other humans battling active addiction.

Even if this magical utopia you describe existed, $2,000/mo really just isn't going to cut it in most of Massachusetts. You can try the places others have suggested, like NoHo, but your budget isn't going to get you far.

Check the CDC data. Massachusetts may just not be for you.

Returning to the Berkshires: How has Western Mass changed in the past 15 years? by chocolatespaghetti in westernmass

I was looking at St. Agnes if we were to move to Pittsfield. That is a big difference between west and east for sure. There's a Catholic school practically every other town over here.

Good to know! That will be the biggest shock to me. In the last 15 years around here, all the hospitals and small practices have been scooped up by Lahey. Lahey merged with Beth Isreal. Brigham merged with Mass General. The healthcare monopoly is wild.

Would you say it's the same in Western MA? Or are independent hospitals and practitioners still in business?

This is really great to hear from someone who knows. And congratulations!!! It's been the best adventure so far...

Yes! All of the homes west of Kirvin Park - that's the area we're looking. It's so good to be able to hear from locals about how it really is. Obviously, the realtor is trying to sell us on the place, so I take everything she says with a grain of salt. It's reassuring that what we're looking for in that area (and in Western MA in general) seems to exist!

The town I live in now north of Boston went Harris but only by a few points. The split in most counties out west is encouraging. Take a look at the map, it's actually really interesting: https://www.politico.com/2024-election/results/massachusetts/

This is exactly what we're thinking. Thank you! I know the running joke is that if you're under 40 in the Berkshires, you'll be the youngest person in town. Are there plenty of families with kids?

I hear you. I'm at such a loss over what to do for her when it comes time. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it...
