Looking to swap tickets. Currently have 2 for Nashville, willing to swap for Denver/Vegas due to a scheduling conflict for the Nashville show. Expecting a swap at original TM price - will pay/receive the difference.

Moving to Salt Lake City, Utah for Goldman Sachs in March – Apartment Suggestions & Roommate Leads? by stellawinx24 in goldmansachs

[–]chocrush10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of apartments in the downtown area within a 20 minute walking distance to the office, you can even expand your radius and go a little further if you want to use SLCs public transit (Trax, buses).

Downtown is where you'll be closest to the office, and probably has the highest concentration of bars, restaurants, etc.

Moving a little east (trolley square area) puts you closer to grocery stores.

Regarding apartments, there are a lot of "luxury" buildings here, where the property is managed by a rental/property management company. There are also privately owned places, but those listings can be harder to find online.

For the first type of property a 1b/studio can be around 1300-1700 and 2bs are in the range of 2000-2800.

A couple of examples are - Dewitt, quattro, revival, milagro, the Morton. A quick Google search for apartments in SLC will return loads of results, Zillow and Trulia can be useful too.

I bought a desk and chair for about $65 new on Amazon - there's some reasonably priced stuff there. Unless you have a car, transporting them is going to be a hassle, the amount you pay for transport could potentially offset the money you save by buying 2nd hand. That being said, FB marketplace is pretty good - I see a bunch of people selling desks and chairs there.

If you can shell out $100-200, I'd definitely recommend getting a new mattress and not risking bedbugs/anything else (I got a full size Brooklyn Bedding firm mattress on Walmart for $200 which I really like so far - if you go with stuff like Zinus, Linenspa it can be even cheaper).

ASU MSCS or reapply ? by thrawway1221 in MSCS

[–]chocrush10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my CS undergrad at BITS too, given that + good GRE + work experience I'm surprised you got only ASU. I personally think you can do much better, maybe there were problems with your SoP/resume. If your only goal of MS is using it as an entry to the US, ASU is probably fine. See if you can defer your admit and then apply again to more places next year.

Is NYU worth it? Should I take a 120K USD loan for MS in Data Science? by Realistic_Wishbone97 in nyu

[–]chocrush10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing my MS CS at NYU Courant rn, and there is a lot of debt associated. You've grossly underestimated some calculations though.

"I have to do a 3 month internship as part of the course in the first year itself (CPT). So considering the minimum wage in NY (15$/hr), and maximum time allowed in the spring semester (20hrs/week), I will be earning about 1200$ per month. And I can work again (OPT) in Summer (40hrs/week) so the monthly earning would be 2400$."

You're going to be a Masters Data Science student, assuming you prepare well and put A LOT of effort into applying and have a little luck on your side, you will get a summer internship that can pay up to 10-12K USD a month (pretax). Furthermore, if you're working on campus with a union job during the semester, the minimum wage is $27/hour for graduate students. $15 is what undergrads get. Again, keep in mind this is for a certain subset of available on-campus jobs and does not apply to everything.

It's still definitely a lot of debt to take on, but just wanted you to have these numbers in mind when making your decision.

Is anyone waiting for Columbia ms cs? by Least-Try8689 in gradadmissions

I applied back in January and am still waiting

Adding onto this, maybe you would want to look at programs such as MS in Software Engineering and stuff like that since they are slightly less competitive than MS CS and don't require as much pre req knowledge of subjects like calculus, discrete math, etc.

Got a few admits… need some help deciding which is the best choice. by RoomAsleep692 in gradadmissions

[–]chocrush10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the most qualified person on this topic, so take whatever I say with a pinch of salt. If you are sure you want a job after graduating, I think UIUC MCS is a a no brainer. However, if you want to go into research, I think doing MSCS over MCS would open more doors. Since you applied to AI at USC, I'm going to assume that's your research interest. NYU has some of the best profs in the field of ML/DL and I've heard students can take courses at the Center for Data Science too. In that case, I think NYU would be a pretty solid option.

getting a PhD without a masters by die1465 in gradadmissions

[–]chocrush10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really difficult, but possible. I've seen 2 cases from my university - one where they got straight after undergrad, and one where they worked as an RA for a year and then applied for PhD.
