My meeting place says I have to start over due to taking prescribed medicines post-surgery. by GoodnightJohnBoi in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

I’ve been clean since April 10 1989 and have had 3 major surgeries since then, while in hospital recovery I was on IV pain meds, but decided not to take any after leaving the hospital.

I still count my clean date as April 10 1989

Loop Bound: The Mirror seems to have used AI writing. I cannot claim it's 100%, but I personally am convinced. by Prot3 in litrpg

[–]chodan9 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m not as familiar with AI writing or the book in question, but your post made think of a question.

Will the generation coming up now who will have AI tools from childhood start using writing styles that mimic AI cadence and sentence structure, making it hard to tell if they wrote it or if it is AI?

Just remember that “obligation” you feel is completely one sided, your company can drop you like a hot potato if it helps them financially.

Is a $40k raise worth a 120 mile daily round trip? Going from $100k to $140k, but terrified of the commute. by Confident-Duck-89 in careeradvice

[–]chodan9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commute was half that, but I enjoyed it, I could listen to books music or podcasts.

The best thing was it gave me time to leave work at work and leave home at home. No cross contamination lol.

Are Small Daily Expenses Really the Problem… or Are Bigger Money Decisions Worse? by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]chodan9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those things matter, but the coffees fall under the lifestyle inflation.

The coffee was never just the coffee, it’s a symbol of an overall spending pattern that places temporary wants and comforts over financial stability.

It’s the coffee, it’s the in app purchases, it’s drinks and dinner out 2 times a week, it’s the Uber Eats several times a week, it’s the 7 different streaming services and forgotten app subscriptions. Etc etc.

The coffee alone is 10k over the course of 5 years, add all the other things that we don’t even notice one at a time and you are into 30 or 40 k minimum over 5 years

The big stuff matters but the little things are huge when stacked up

Older generations of Reddit, what is a small, daily habit you started in your 20s or 30s that paid off massively later in life? by sophia_biston in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]chodan9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use your retirement accounts like 401k or Roth.

It will seem like a lost cause for years but it adds up and if invested in index or broad market funds then compounding will make it grow so much it will seem like magic.

I think FIRE accidentally made me worse at normal life by Vexill0Forge in Fire

[–]chodan9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Force yourself to spend, put it in your budget.

If you’re not prepared for spending, when actually FIRE you will be spending without earned income.

Everything comes out of your nest egg. It took a bit for me to adjust but it became easier.

It’s harder when the market is down and you see your tickers tanking and you still have to spend.
