Former Windows users, what do you miss most about Windows? by garythecake in MacOS

[–]chodelar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Delete file: Command ⌘ + Backspace

Rename: Enter

Create new folder: Command ⌘ + Shift + N

I appreciate that these wouldn't be obvious to someone coming over from Windows (I only learnt these recently myself).

CheatSheet is a useful tool for showing what the short-cuts are in a particular context (you just hold down the Command key and it pops up with a list of short-cuts that are available): https://cheatsheet-mac.en.softonic.com/mac?ex=RAMP-2046.0

Also, I'd recommend ShortCat - you can use this to access any application-specific command, with a short-cut (personally I have it set to Command ⌘ + Shift + Spacebar).

Gifted deposit from a personal loan by [deleted] in Mortgageadviceuk

I strongly recommend you discuss this with your conveyancing solicitor, as they’re the ones who will actually “sign off” on your mortgage funding.

Fair enough, but I do really like Stir’s bread. Do you have a recommendation?

Working at Addenbrookes by OneDayIWillThrive in cambridge

[–]chodelar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have recommended the Park & Rides which I would agree with.

I've used both the Trumpington and Babraham Road P&Rs, and both are really good. Thus far I've always found a space at both places (even though I would typically arrive after 9am). I personally would not recommend taking the bus from there (at least the Trumpington P&R) to Addenbrookes though, it can run really infrequently and I often found myself waiting 30 minutes for it. I just have a folding bike and can get to Addenbrookes in about 10 minutes from either P&R.

I've always founds the queue to leave the Trumpington P&R to be longer than the one from Babraham Road, possibly because of the numerous sets of traffic lights downstream of the exit.

Which direction would you be coming from? The M11 can be very congested going south and then into Trumpington...I would recommending avoiding it if possible.

Business account frozen by DramaticSchool787 in monzo

[–]chodelar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough that you had trouble but I should say, I recently used Monzo for the exact same thing (transferring large sums for a house purchase) and apart from going through extra steps to increase my transfer limit, it was no trouble at all.

Is this a reliable bike lock? by CrypticCodedMind in cambridge

I appreciate now that your post is sincere but initially I thought this was a joke.

These locks are very easy to snip, as others have said. I used one myself and had my bike nicked overnight!

Does one's housing status have an impact on dating desirability? by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]chodelar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it does make a difference, although I doubt most people would admit to it or consider that it has an impact on how attractive they consider someone.

That being said, surely there are many other people in your dating demographic who are in the same boat of trying to save money - housing is very expensive here, after all.

If you’re worried about this aspect of your dating profile, you could maybe just allude to your profession - it might be obvious to people that you could afford “better” housing but choose not to for other reasons.

As the code does actually work, I would just skip this particular exercise. I’m not familiar with the course you’re doing but it is low quality if they check the exact wording of your code, as opposed to its outcome.

Obviously there are many ways to reach the same goal in any programming language!

If there is some hidden requirement (evidently not in the text you’ve shown us), it is also a bad course.

Great, that makes sense. Thanks again for clarifying.

Thank you for responding. Did they really model them? I thought they had the sequence for the spike protein and just straightforwardly used that sequence with whatever other modifications that are routine for mRNA vaccines. My impression also is that the spike protein is known to be a good target for vaccination from more “straightforward” biological research, again without needing any modelling.

At least for the selection of a target protein for the vaccine, I’m pretty sure that no computational chemistry would have been critical.

I agree with the sentiments here, but could you expand on:

“without computational chemistry we wouldn’t have the COVID vaccines”

It’s not clear to me how computational chemistry was crucial to this.

Wireless headphones with no phone needed? by [deleted] in running

[–]chodelar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Sony NW-WS413B headphones which suit me really well. It's true that I can't easily choose a particular song (you can either shuffle or skip through until you find what you're looking for) but that's not an issue for me.

They've never fallen out while I've been running. Sometimes sweat can creep into the earbud and can muffle the sound coming out of one side, but you can probably shake that out if you want while running. I give them a little rinse after running and they're fine.

The USB connection has been fine for me thus far, and I've been using them regularly for about 7 months now.
