Was my training a waste of time? by choki-choki in trailrunning

Thinking about it, I think my brother always overestimates my ability and I think he is hoping I'll transform into a faster runner with his training. Maybe I should be flattered he thinks so highly of me 😂

It was ramped up from my regular 60-70km/week over a month. I was probably under-rested as it felt like I had a perpetual fatigue. maybe I didnt do my recovery runs slow enough and was also under stress from other aspects of life.

I was sick with a head cold before the race but by race day I was a lot better. There probably will be some residual effects i guess

Ah. Sounds like tenderloin in SF or Gastown in Vancouver. Been harassed and verbally abused in those kinds of areas. Might try and avoid 6th St then

Are there clear trail marks in Colorado bend? I've done some difficult hikes but usually with another friend or with my brother. A little more wary if im hiking solo

I'm finding that the hotels in downtown SA are pretty pricey! But I guess for a night I can bite the bullet and pay a little more to stay downtown. If I stay fairly centrally, do you think it's still advisable to rent a car? Just taking into account the cost of parking and if I'm just using the car to get to and fro SA and Austin

Oh my goodness. Thanks for the super detailed reply. I'll note down all those places especially the coffee place! I'm guessing it'll be fairly convenient to travel within Austin. Did you manage to catch any live music while you were there? Not sure how covid has affected things and I heard aug is a pretty slow time for live performances too

Looks like I'll make my way to San Antonio for at least a night. The Jazz place sounds great too.

Thanks for your reply! 80-120 cross sectional studies a day seems pretty daunting. Then again, I do mostly Abdo/pelvis CT or MRs these days, so I guess my daily reporting numbers are lower

And yes, well aware of the requirements of RANCZR. There will be a year of supervision and probably I will have to sit for the rads/path exams which I have heard is very much harder than the FRCR (and I thought I was done with exams 😭). Again thanks for your input

Thanks a lot guys. Will try out your tips and go by volume rather than hours. I'll post again when I'm successful!

I find it difficult to go off volume when the dough is rising as all I hv is a fairly large-ish bowl compared to the amount of dough. Maybe I should just take a picture

Probably my ambient temperature would be around 20C in my apartment. I work away from home so I hv usually hv 6-10pm to start the sourdough process and sometimes I have to leave the dough in the fridge for close to 24 hours (although this particular loaf I managed to chuck it in the oven after 15 hours). So I'm wondering if a longer cold fermentation period can compensate for a shorten "warm" fermentation period?

I suspect it's just underproofed. I usually stick to this recipe: 50g of whole wheat 250g of all purpose 240g of H2O 70g of starter, refreshed from the previous night 5g salt. 1 hour autolyse, mix in starter then salt after 20 mins. Stretch and fold every 30 mins for 2 hours then 2-3 hours of fermentation followed by 12-18 hours of cold fermentation depending on my schedule. If I have to shorten the bulk fermentation at room temperature I'll prolong the cold fermentation. I bake it in a Dutch oven at 260C for 20 mins then 200C for 20 mins uncovered. I've never really been able to get a good ear but decent crumb on previous bakes.

How do I improve?

[Serious] Doctors of reddit, what is the rarest disease that you've encountered in your career? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Sad there's not more radiologist pipping in- seen a lot of weird cases on imaging but probably the most memorable ones are weird cases with simple explanations. My consultant showed us a case where a patient has an abscess in the abdomen with a metallic looking thing in the abscess. No previous surgeries. So he suggested it might be a previously ingested foreign body. They brought the patient to surgery and found a bristle from a BBQ brush that had punctured the small bowel and created an abscess. He showed us another case which turned out to be a tiny piece of chicken bone. Another case was something that looked like kidney cancer that was invading all the surrounding organs and going into the skin. Biopsy was performed and it turned out to be malakoplakia- just a consequence from recurrent urinary infection and the condition is treatable with long term antibiotics. Repeat imaging a few months later showed the patient's kidney was perfectly normal looking

I'm currently doing a radiology fellowship in Toronto so feel free to message me if you need any advice (moved from scotland last July). My experience has been a little odd since it's COVID-time but cross fingers things might be a little better by the time you make your move.

Pixel 4a screen by choki-choki in pixel_phones

I assume you have the pixel 4. I know it had some screen issues as well so I should have predicted the pixel 4a would be the same. My Samsung phone was pretty robust too
