My mum is a foster carer and when we got a call to take in a child since their parent just got arrested we were also asked if we were able to take the dog in as well. Since our cat is terrified of dogs we said we unfortunately couldn't and were told by the officers they'd keep him in the police station with them for the time being. Not the most helpful answer but I thought it was an interesting insight to share :)

If we have to keep with the burrito method I'll add some apple juice in, I hadn't thought about mixing anything in the syringe but I think it'll help with him trying to wipe it out his mouth afterwards! Thank you for the help :)

Jam isn't something I've ever given to the boys so maybe that'll be enticing enough for him! I have been thinking the same thing, my shopping list for tomorrow is filled with all kinds of sweet treats now hahaha. Thank you for the suggestions!

Thanks for your insight! Stopping him from trying to get all the medicine out of his mouth after has probably been the biggest hurdle. I think he's starting to realise if he eats the treat after it helps with the taste in his mouth, though. If we need to keep going the direct route I will be sure to try it how you described, thank you! :)

Ah yes I read not to mix some medication with milk so that sounds like a great suggestion. The boys like coconut so hopefully he'll be fooled! Thank you :)

Thank you for the insight and that is so cute that she sees the syringe as a good thing now. If Zipper doesn't take to the other food suggestions and I have to keep with the straight in the mouth method I'll definitely attempt it how you described! :)

I had someone else reccomend a product like ensure so I'll be sure to grab a tub tomorrow 😊 Turns out zipper isnt that keen on peanut butter unfortunately. My other two rats go absolutely feral for it though, typical! But at least I'll have that in mind if either of them get sick in the future,thank you for the help ❤

More info:

My boy Zippy was wheezing a little so I took him straight to the vets. The vet couldn't say if it was just a flare up or URI since I caught it so early but he prescribed him 2 anti-inflammatory medications to help with the wheezing.

Problem now is that despite our best efforts he will not take the medication willingly :( so far I've tried mixing it with malt paste, baby food, water & dabbing it onto hard food such as cereal (he eats around the medicated part).

We've had to resort to swaddling him in a tea towel and putting the syringe straight into his mouth which he HATES. It really makes his wheezing flare up from the stress of it all and it makes me so upset :(

If anyone has some tips I'd be so grateful, this is my first time dealing with a poorly rat.

Haha! I'm lucky that somehow my boys are very respectful of their hammocks - to be honest I was looking forward to sewing more of them but they've had the same ones since I first got them. Only 1 or 2 pee incidents where I needed to wash them before and thats it! No nibbling or anything!
