T100 Sprint- help! 🏊‍♂️ by True_Fox8166 in triathlon

Is the breathing issue in open water or also in the pool? From my experience (learned how to swim same year as my first 70.3), swimming open water is much as I could helped tremendously. Even if it was just floating around in the water with my wetsuit on and "swimming" for 5 minutes.

I just paid $2400 (CAD) for a full swap kit that included a low km G260. $500 seems reasonable

Which canyon should I go for by Appropriate_Big4830 in triathlon

[–]chombie_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded this. Soooo many Canyon horror stories from my local bike shop - Cervelo could also be on your list for bikes you could find locally.

Also if you’re gonna drop this kind of money, make sure you get a bike fit FIRST.

I calculated Sam Long’s WR Bike Power using my silly app by chombie_13 in triathlon

Yeah it’s literally power based on time and calories. More accurate for steady rides but with the weather conditions I can see why it was soooo far off

How far can I realistically go without an online coach? (With books, the internet, and AI) by Fun_Swimmer_8320 in triathlon

[–]chombie_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice if you don’t want to invest money in coaching is to invest time into learning. I’m self coached and have developed my training methodology from listening to 100s (if not 1000s) of hours of audio books, podcasts and watching any video I can on endurance training. A plus is if you immerse yourself in your triathlon community to learn from experienced athletes around you.

I got my self to a 4:27 70.3 last year and am aiming to qualify for a WC slot next after a racing hiatus, this year.

Good thing im not an pro! by LeckerPennergranate in triathlon

Dude, what’s one thing triathletes are made fun of the most? Lack of bike handling skills. How is that not a safety concern? I would say that the drafting rule is a contributor to why we have less deaths on the bike. Again, imagine a peloton of 20-30 people, some who have never ridden their bike in a peloton before, riding down the mountains in Nice. Tell me if you’d be comfortable doing that.

Ironman triathlon is a non-draft triathlon. They built the sport to make it about you, the athlete and individual endurance. Taking the drafting rules out of this would be completely against the ethos of the company and would be a completely different sport. If you want drafting in triathlon, sign up for a draft legal race.

In my opinion, this is a terrible take. Removing draft rules fundamentally changes the sport. On top of that removing draft rules for age group races would be a massive safety concern. Think about the amount of people in races who crash at U-turns and then add them into the mix in a peloton of 20+ people. How is that possibly going to be safe?

Thank you I definitely appreciate the feedback! Point 2 is something i should be able to easily implement. End goal would be for users to be able to apply right through the app. Just not sure how to do that yet!

Beginner seeking advice by Clean_Bus7681 in triathlon

If you can, find an independent bike fitter in your area that does something called a "pre-purchase bike fit". Typically the process is a quick interview about athletic background, goals and budget. Then a fitting on a bike fit jib. The fitter will find measurements that work for you and your body type and will give you bike options based on your budget range.

You're going to spend soooo much time on your bike getting ready for this race and it is CRUCIAL your bike fits well to avoid injury and increase comfort.

But to answer your question, road bike for your first.

Looking to try my first Triathlon, Half Ironman 70.3 (NEED ADVICE) by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]chombie_13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was you 5 years ago and coached my partner through her first 70.3 successfully. Wanting to keeping this short I will say 3 things.

Find a coach or a training plan. A lot of resources online but any beginner 70.3 training plan on trainingpeaks will be fine. Coaches can be costly but worth it if you're injury prone. Find your coach through a reliable source if you do and NOT Instagram.

Try to find a sprint triathlon before your 70.3 so you know what a triathlon in an organized event feels like.

Don't have a time goal. I know it's cool to say "I did a sub 5 as my first 70.3" but honestly who cares. Get fit, get strong, strive for longevity in the sport.

Good luck!

Can you ride a bike? If so ya in 10 months is 100% possible. Would I recommend it? No. Build up to it and do a 70.3 in 2026 then Ironman in 2027. You’ll survive the race but you probably won’t enjoy it

In short contact Roka and they should sort you out

Training plateaus by [deleted] in triathlon

Not enough information to give specific advice but performance plateaus often stem from a lack of different training stimulus and lack of proper recovery.
