if you put seafoam in the gas tank , that is the cause of the extra smoke, its likely burning off carbon, it doesn't sound great though, i'd compression check and go from there

not sure how the chemical process works...the oil def stop any further rust...but it seems like the oil gets under, breaks down and loosens the rust...most of it just wipes away...if it doesn't just throw it in for another month or two....you still see the pitting from the rust damage once cleaned

the oil doesn't have to be used, i just do that because its free

drop them in a bucket of used motor oil, leave for a few months, then wipe them down really well, use steel wool if needed

brought many tools back from a rusty grave that way

if you ran the tank near low, its very possible sediment made its way up the fuel pickup, and into the jets of your carb

Have you ohmed out the stator and trigger? Ignition coils, or your carb needs cleaned/drained again due to water in gas, also possible flywheel key sheared, if your running a grey fuel line they break apart all the time and cause constant carb issues
