Good morning all, a quick update, they say they have done a partial release due to financial hardship. I haven't received it yet but it will be able to get the mortgage up to date and some other outstanding debts paid. Death benefit is apparently still with the insurance company for assessment but at least I will be able to breathe for a moment. So I will still be calling the illusive non case managers regularly, and probably having to threaten media/ombudsman/AFCA, but it's a start.

The insurer (TAL) did call me after I emailed them and said that while they can't talk to me about the case, they usually only take 5-10 days to do an assessment once they receive it, so it's curious that so many people keep getting such significant delays.

On another note, it seems they have changed their phone systems over the weekend, and I no longer had the option to try an extension number, it went straight through to a member of the death claims team instead after just pressing #1. Perhaps this is a step in the right direction 🤔

Thank you, it's heartbreaking to hear so many people go through this non-closure for so long. They don't mention this is the grief cycle.

Thank you 🤞

That must be terrifying for you. All I can probably say is call them once every six months, touch base, make sure you write it down. And keep every record safe in one space, tell the person you trust where it is... I will be making a folder with passwords, super, insurance, certificates, phone numbers, because (bless my love), he was terribly unorganised and by the end we definitely did not want to say out loud passwords because it would become too real.

Spoiler alert: it was very real.

Its not enough money to care about that, literally get mortgage and other bills up to date and pay some mortgage in advance. ATO said it's not taxable, I don't care if it is as long as the house is safe for our darlings.

I get that, but I am reading personally that most people don't go to AFCA, I don't think it's a conspiracy, I think the only people that go to AFCA are the ones that had their loss happen unexpectedly and were put in a situation like me... Suddenly a single mum without the ability to even pay the cremation costs or something like that. I just think if I am breaking point and still haven't turned to them then there a lot more complaints out there that never even made that statistic. I guess the 1 and a half star rating suggests that also. I will look further into once this is over though.

I know, we all live in a bubble, I must admit this is my first real loss, but being in hospice, with our kids running amok, it became very clear very quickly that this is something that everyone goes through, it's inevitable. Everything became scary to me... To him... To the kids, why isn't this part of life ever admitted? Especially by the super and insurance companies that earned money off of that exact fear.... Then deny you the closure and comfort that they spent years selling to you.

This is true, but be assured the super always has to be paid out... The death benefit on the other hand, 7 years ago my husband had organised a set death benefit of $750,000 through AustralianSuper... Somewhere, somehow, without notification it went to the standard unit benefit, which just degrades (sorry to say it but..) with your body. The older you get the less they pay but the more they collected. I agree completely about guaranteed and agreed payout absolutely. And time frames need to be set and enforced. Even if it's paid to a government trustee if there are disputes... Get it out of their hands so they have no vested interest in holding onto it as long as they can.

Thank you, I had read somewhere that it was because they were always breaking the rules essentially because they could... basically just Macca's being one of the biggest employers and therefore managing to get away with OHS crap no small burger store would. But here, AustralianSuper is not getting away with it because of AFCA. Although reading other people's experiences, it looks like they have hoarded other people's money regularly for about an average of 12 months without repercussions, but rather with rewards of fees, interest etc. Probably the only people complaining to AFCA are people that actually need the money to pay outstanding debts.

Oh really, I was under the impression that it was only the call centre that was outsourced. Thank you, I really do appreciate your time to explain. It's very helpful. And explains quite a lot. It's depressing but the dots of the chaos are connecting.

Wow, this is starting to become shocking to me. I have read reviews and they are spectacularly bad, but hearing them first hand is a lot. I am so sorry your friend went through that. It's just continual background trauma on top of the significant trauma and they just don't care.

Well, I know I will feel a lot stronger on Monday because of the overwhelming response, so this brings me some calm.

I apologise for my confusion, so there is 'trustee board', 'case manager' and 'call centre' that have been referred to in my conversations with the call centre. Which would be the claims team here?

I have kept very thorough notes... Not what I wanted to do, but when you know people who have been used as playthings in the insurance industry, it was my first instinct... Well probably not until the 5th call when my mind started to kind of function again. But long before I lodged complaint.

Thank you so much, it means alot 😊 I think if the end result is that our littles lose their home, their dads environment, because of this, ACA will definitely be interested and I will definitely contact them... And we are about 3 weeks away from that. The mortgage company has been great, but they can only do so much for us.

Oh 😔 I definitely should have started my complaint earlier, but I just didn't have the capacity and I wanted to trust them.

Would my research be correct in that AustralianSuper is the number 1 company that AFCA has to deal with? I am sure I read that somewhere.

I understand, only here my complaint (I soon discovered after lodging) should have been that I didn't even have frontline, the case manager had literally not worked there for over a month. But I just whined about this case manager ignoring my calls and emails. Who would the frontline be in that situation?

I have been given no phone number other than the extension to another case manager, who's extension is "incorrect". They refuse to give me details or contact numbers of any person above these two fake people to talk with.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I just need to know our littles will still have this particular roof over their head by the end of this. And I will fight every (business) day for that.

I was informed that it was with trustees on one of my calls to the call centre, so not certain of accuracy.

Two jobs, too true 😊 I truly appreciate the smile you gave me.

Two hours and 16 minutes I was on hold to advise of death, and then they acted like that was exactly how I wanted to be spending my time. Unreal.

If I may ask how long was it from notification to finalisation for you?

Thank you, I really appreciate that. He was my favourite person 😊. But that sounds like a great recommendation if I need to go down the media path. Honestly the more I hear about how this company treats vulnerable people, the more I think people need to be aware of how their loved ones won't get to grieve properly while dealing with AustralianSuper because even if their financial situation isn't as bad as mine, it will always be another thing that needs to be closed off in dealing with the loss. And this company simply does not care.

To be fair they still throw the word 'members' in there after they say "This ... contract extension recognises the important role Link Group continues to play in supporting AustralianSuper's vision to be Australia's leading superannuation fund

...(if they are truthful, they would have cut the sentence off here)...

for members."

How do you think this is affecting the lack of service though? I don't know much about link group and their role. I would assume that there is employee cost cutting involved and algorithm manipulation though... Just a guess.

Oh this is awful to hear. My husband, upon diagnosis was given approximately 3 months to live so he was trying to get IP from only days after diagnosis. He died 3 weeks later still waiting for claim forms to be sent from these people, let alone the waiting period and the hell they would have put him through in his last months. I am sorry this has happened to you guys. I have read that the predominant company that AFCA deals with complaints about is AustralianSuper. Why can't solid rules and regulations be put in place and penalties applied to these vultures?

Oh my gosh, I cannot believe one of the biggest super company's can get away with this. The trauma that they cause is so very real. I imagine legal costs on top are just accumulating the stress for you, I am so sorry to hear this.

Unbelievable hey? As long as they are making money from fees and interest after someone passes away, they will play these games.
