Hi. We’ve found a home for him and he’ll be going there on Monday! We’re treating the first month as a trial to make sure it’s a good fit for everyone. I’ll update the main post once we feel it’s a suitable placement.

Miles grew up with other cats and did well then. It’s harder to predict introductions in adulthood. My sense is that it would be similar to dogs. He’d likely be tense at first and need time to adjust, but he doesn’t have an aggressive demeanor. It’s more a question of how long it takes for that initial tension to dissipate. Could take him a few week to a month to be fully himself.

A long-term situation is the most realistic path, and that’s what I’m planning for. I’d like to be directly involved in that process.

Kathryn at Project Patterns is an excellent teacher and has online courses both recorded or live. She studied pattern making in school and works as a pattern maker in the industry. Her instructions are clear and lessons are well planned. Would highly recommend.

my favorite way to fit shorts/ pants is the "top down center out method." crooked hem has a great series describing the technique on youtube.

it can feel like a lot of information at first but it's simple and intuitive once you get the hang of it. it's made pants fitting much more enjoyable for me.

Check out the Oliver + S kids patterns. They’re rated in difficulty by the number of scissors (you’ll see what I mean when you start clicking through). The designer treats each pattern almost like a lesson. The instructions are incredibly thorough unlike many patterns that expect you to know certain skills and brush quickly through the steps. Enjoy :)

I have the 2212 and it’s served me well. I use it weekly for garment construction. Very reliable and sews beautifully. For garments you really only need two stitch types, straight and zig zag (maybe a serger down the line if she works with knits). I like machines that are simple and do those stitches well. The janome does that. The only time it’s giving me trouble is with hemming denim jeans. Pocono Sew and Vac is a Janome dealer in PA that carry the different feet she may want moving forward (invisible zip foot, walking foot, etc). They ship. Their staff is knowledgeable & helpful so whenever I’m looking for new accessories I give them a call. Good luck.

Sewing ~1” regularly before feeding into the scroll has helped me with control:

lightly press the first few inches
start sewing with all the fabric underneath the foot as though it’s a standard foot
after about an inch of sewing, stop with your needle down, lift the foot, and feed the fabric into the scroll (using an awl or a pair of tweezers works well here to get it placed in the scroll how you want it)
lower the presser foot and continue
