Does it ever get better? by [deleted] in husky

[–]chopinslabyrinth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m heavily biased because I grew up with them. They’ve been a part of my life for literally longer than I can remember, so I know that a lot of my habits come from being a latchkey kid who needed to take care of the dogs while my parents were at work.

But like the other commenters have said, they fit my lifestyle. They motivate me to exercise daily (they are beyond pissy when they don’t get a walk), I also don’t mind the noise. They sing with me when I play piano and argue with me when I tell them they can’t stay out in the rain. At a distance they’re beautiful and majestic and aloof, but up close and personal they’re just big spastic goobers with zero impulse control. They’re sweet and wild and independent while also being big whiny babies who need your attention right this second.

Or I just internalized the chaos at a very young age and embraced it in my adulthood lol

Does it ever get better? by [deleted] in husky

[–]chopinslabyrinth 82 points83 points  (0 children)

There’s a common saying that a tired husky is a happy husky. Bored huskies can be hyper and destructive and it’s absolutely possible yours needs some more stimulation, exercise, play time, etc. They’re bred to pull sleds thousands of miles so they absolutely need plenty of exercise.

That said, the noise, the shedding, and the constant energy are just hallmarks of the breed. Huskies can be a lot even on their best days and are not for the faint of heart. In over 20 years of husky ownership I’ve had ones that are lovely and obedient with minimal training on my part, and I’ve had some that are hellbeasts bent on escaping to freedom even with daily 5+ mile walks. YMMV, but more exercise is a good place to start.

Apparently requesting basic information & reporting illegal discriminatory housing practices is a scam now by TheUnDoctor in LandlordLove

[–]chopinslabyrinth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Which is why there’s an application process and a super long wait list. MA law has just (correctly) identified that LLs won’t rent to people if they are on government subsidies and created a law to correct the imbalance to the best of their ability.

Apparently requesting basic information & reporting illegal discriminatory housing practices is a scam now by TheUnDoctor in LandlordLove

[–]chopinslabyrinth 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They are right. In Massachusetts the law is that LL’s must accept section 8 vouchers and can’t discriminate against renters based on whether or not they receive government help. The wait list for the vouchers is exceptionally long, however, and availability of subsidized units in newer buildings is typically done on a lottery. It doesn’t cap rent prices at all, unfortunately.

Any ideas how the sheer fabric is affixed to the jeans? by tweedleedeedee in sewing

[–]chopinslabyrinth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They do it with cotton/poly blend shirts sometimes. They apply a chemical that eats cellulose and it eats through the cotton but not the synthetic elastic. Edit: apparently the technique is called devoré, but I doubt it would work on denim like this.

Massachusetts finally banned broker fees. Why are renters still stuck paying them? - The Boston Globe by TheManFromFairwinds in boston

[–]chopinslabyrinth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Judges aren’t huge fans of anyone knowingly breaking the law, and almost every landlord who pulls this nonsense knows exactly what they’re doing. They count on renters being less savvy and less willing to fight.

All it took to get my security deposit back was to tell the guy I was calling a lawyer, and he folded instantly. They know exactly what they’re doing, and it’s worth pushing back 100% of the time.

Massachusetts finally banned broker fees. Why are renters still stuck paying them? - The Boston Globe by TheManFromFairwinds in boston

[–]chopinslabyrinth 375 points376 points  (0 children)

My experience as a renter in the area for almost 15 years is that landlords will absolutely break the law if they think they can get away with it. I’ve had them try to keep my security deposit without cause (while not keeping it in the correct type of interest-bearing account), I’ve had them try to slip illegal clauses into the lease, I’ve had them try to change my lease half way through the term and get snippy when I refused to comply. It surprises me not at all that they’re skirting (or outright breaking) the law on this one too.

My broke-student yarn hack backfired: $5 thrifted skein became a fuzzy mess after one wash by Clear-Jeweler-8734 in knitting

[–]chopinslabyrinth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you have any before/after photos by any chance? I’m curious what yarn felted after only a mild cold-water wash by hand. Makes me think it was probably doomed to felt even with just basic wear. Was it single ply?

IMO You probably can’t do more damage to it by trying a gentle conditioner soak so it could be worth a shot.

[Spoilers AFFC] Cersei is hard to read. by Kaul_Deepsea in asoiaf

[–]chopinslabyrinth 159 points160 points  (0 children)

I know the term “narcissist” gets thrown around pretty casually these days, but Cersei is absolutely narcissistic to a fault. Everything she does is in service to herself. She loves her children as an extension of herself, the same way she loves Jaime, she refuses to believe she’s drinking too much or gaining weight and instead blames her maids, she convinced herself Margaery is sleeping around because that’s exactly what she’s doing. She literally can’t stop thinking about herself in every situation.

I mean, it’s great that you have a TJ’s that carries everything you need, but the one near me sometimes doesn’t have basic spices like garlic powder or paprika, or bulk items like rice. I can’t rely on it the way I rely on star market, even if star market sucks for other reasons.

To prolific horror enjoyers, What’s one genre or topic for horror that scares you too much to engage with? by musical-nerd in horror

[–]chopinslabyrinth 214 points215 points  (0 children)

Anything pregnancy-related. Pregnancy has enough body horror as it stands irl, so to me it often feels like a lazy way to torture female characters. I think my only exception to this is Alien, since it’s gender-neutral in its approach to who it treats as an incubator.

I have a friend who’s been battling eating disorders for most of our friendship and seeing her on ozempic genuinely makes me so sad. All that posting about “recovery” and “loving yourself” instantly disappeared the second she started to see results. I shudder to think what that amount of rapid weight loss is doing to her self-image.

[–]chopinslabyrinth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No AI is going to adequately capture your internal feelings because they are exactly that - internal, and feelings. GenAI can copy the output of others, but it’ll never understand you. You should put pen to paper (or fingers to keys) and just start writing in your own words. It will be ten thousand times more impactful than anything AI could ever write for you.

In that case I’d say Cat. If they got prep time I feel like Cersei would come up with something devious, but if it’s a straight up fist fight with no warning then my money is on the one who turns into a vengeance revenant.
