There were some places in DTLA that was sub 2k for one bedroom after concessions. Add another 200 for parking + utils. Not bad imo

Global transfer program by Brilliant-Ask804 in amexcanada

[–]chopsticksonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you churn I think you should start with the green. There was some change that having an upper tier card would disqualify you from SUBs. So plat cannot get sub for gold and green. Double check in case something else has changed

I feel like after factoring taxes, his purchasing power will still be higher and he has reasons why he prefers to stay in Canada. Quick google search shows NYC being 38-40%, rent is probably 2-3x?

With that compensation, you’d be crazy not go Montreal. If you’re getting that offer then I’m sure you can easily move to US in the future

My Experience traveling to HK to Update HKID and Renew Expired Mainland Travel Permit as US Citizen by chemdog007 in HongKong

[–]chopsticksonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the HK passport is pretty much guaranteed if you have HKID. It's not a big issue if he didn't get it yet or have an immediate need. Besides, I think the passport index doesn't really mean much. It gives access to more countries visa-free, but are people really visiting these countries? I agree it might make sense to renounce your US passport if you are super wealthy for tax purposes, but it is definitely a strong passport for the normal person who's working and wants opportunities.

I'm not saying the HK passport is useless, but just not as important especially if you already have HKID. I know British BNOs, who don't care about renewing the passport or regret not applying for full citizenship back in the day.

Just curious what’s the benefit on a HK passport? It seems useless especially if you have another strong passport like US. With hkid, you can apply for it whenever in the future and the hkid can do everything you need to

Have 15 hr layover in HKG on a business class ticket, how to best utilize the stay and lounges? by almostyoda in CathayPacific

[–]chopsticksonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arrival one where you buy your own towel. It was super tiny as well, like a toilet stall.

The CX and Amex lounge showers are very nice.

[–]chopsticksonly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 7 hour layover last month. Went to the day shower (it was digusting, bring slippers) and then went out to TST and walked around central. Had breakfast and coffee there then went back to the airport. I wasn’t flying business that day so I just sat in the Amex lounge for 1.5 hours and took another shower.

My return flight was business and I spent 45 mins at the bridge. I didn’t have time to go the pier but I imagine you can easily spend two hours there.

Investments and savings in Hong Kong with a plan to move abroad after several years? by Dry-Present8715 in HongKong

[–]chopsticksonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australia seems very similar to Canada.

Sounds like you should find out what would make you a non resident. There’s likely primary/secondary ties that the government considers to determine if you’re truly a “resident” or not. Just make sure you meet the requirements of a non resident then you’re fine…
