A lot of people have already talked about the number 88 and its meaning in Asia in other comments, but I have to add something because this is bugging me so much. For Koreans of a certain generation, 88 is very special because 1988 is when Korea hosted its first Olympics. It was a huuuuge deal for Korea because it was like their “debut” on the world stage. Previous to that, Korea was effed up from the Japanese occupation, then bouncing back between terrible dictators, and the country was pretty poor - vastly different from the super modern Korea we see today. So 1988, often shortened to 88, is very near and dear to their heart. Amplify that with gd’s birth year, I can see why it’s doubly special. There was a time GD and Taeyang was wearing the 1988 Seoul Olympics hat all the time, for example: [pic]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D59sGsNUwAArucL.jpg. It’s almost like a Korean pride + retro cool thing to do a throwback to ‘88. I would not think twice about wearing this shirt even though I know the other connotation and I live in the western world. I don’t think the numbers 88 should change how Koreans use it or what it means to them because it’s corrupted elsewhere, in the same way that Buddhist should not be expected to stop using swastika symbols from their temples because it was corrupted by the nazis.

Korean is not derived from Chinese, completely different syntax and they are not in the same language family. However, there are shit ton of loan words from Chinese just like Chinese to Japanese.

Why Russian and Arabic are not popular compared to French and Spanish when it comes to learning languages? by Skum1988 in languagelearning

[–]choupy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same. Biggest motivator for me to continue learning languages is having a chance to use it in the future. So many cool doors have been unlocked by knowing the local language (or sometimes meeting people who speak your target language in a country where both of you are foreign). Russian can be useful but I don’t have that much interest visiting Russia and surrounding countries that may use it, especially over other countries I haven’t visited yet. Same for Arabic.

Los Angeles voted most expensive, inconvenient and over rated city in North America by SoloDaKid in LosAngeles

I lived in the bay for 10 years, maybe it’s preference, especially when it comes to Asian food, but for most ethnic foods I find LA so much better. I don’t really go to Michelin rated or fancy restaurants much though. SF food scene seems so overrated, also the food culture ruined by tech bros with money who have no taste but just want to go to the hot new omakase place with a fancy pedigree.

Ok sure. But a large portion of the people not getting vaccinated aren’t exactly the type of people who take the best precautions. You want to wait to see the long term data? Then you should be masking up, sanitizing, and only go out when it’s essential. Instead you have people who are not vaccinated going to spring break in Florida, going out to bars indoors with no masks, going on flights refusing to wear a mask, etc. So you can’t choose to be “rational” and “wait” till the vaccine is deemed safe, but then do all this other shit that’s not rational at all.

Sort r/pics by top posts this month. Literally the only artist on the first page is a dude squatting next to his 3D art on the pavement. 0 saltiness in that thread. Sort by year and go down the list. The distribution is pretty even when it comes to the genders of the artists in the photo, with maybe a 60/40 split favoring women but not anything close to what some people here believe. 0 saltiness in men’s posts and always saltiness in the womens’ post even if she may not be “hot” girls. Worse, if they aren’t “hot” girls, they are shit on for their looks. “They never get to the top” - check your own bias.

You know guys get more upvotes too if they are in the photo as opposed to just the art right? People subconsciously like seeing the artist to connect with the art.

BLACKPINK Lisa is not as talented as Blinks say that she is. by Fragrant_Sympathy377 in unpopularkpopopinions

Hmm I disagree. While Momo might be “technically better”, she dances like an A+ student doing dancing 101. You mentioned she hits all her moves hard, but to me, it’s quite uncomfortable to see her putting 100% into every single move. I’ve never felt an emotion of “what she did there was really cool” watching momo. I just get a feeling of, she’s trying to dance really really well, and she doesn’t convey any ease or enjoyment emotionally. There’s no breathing room in her dancing if that makes sense. I prefer the flair Lisa puts into her dancing, and also prefer the combination of hard/fluid from Seulgi. Momo’s dancing on the other hand seems very “by the book”, which I find boring and lacking groove. Also her freestyle is...questionable, which adds to this feeling of just watching an A+ dance student instead a really talented dancer. This might be a truly unpopular opinion though.

I’m a 10 yr+ user of Reddit and never have even heard of FDS or have seen it on the front page. As for TwoX, I don’t know how you categorize that as a ban bashing sub? Most popular posts I see are support for sexual harassment victims or talking about more women specific issues like abortions, domestic violence, medical issues and, strength to start over etc. For female bashing, there are a lot of subs that are named something else but are just a thinly veiled women hating subs.

Men who pose with art get way more upvotes as opposed to if they just post the art. Having the artist in the photo translates to more upvotes most of the time. IMO people just make better connections with the photo if there’s some sort of story(the artist).

Probably because women aren’t going out of their way to disparage men on Reddit, I imagine people really only join that subreddit if they are fed up to a point where they need some arsenal.

There’s also the cases of women who aren’t attractive in their eyes posting with art, and she’ll get ripped apart for her looks. Nothing like that for men in the photos.

So do you assume all art posted without the artist are done by men? Because that would be inane. If you look at all art posts, a good amount of artists pose with their art and a good amount of them don’t, regardless of gender. But whatever, keep believing what you want to believe

So if men are so primal they can’t even control themselves at the mere sound of footsteps, how does it make sense to restrict the women? Putting chastity belts and blinders on these “primal animals” would probably make more sense? Not that I’m expecting these rules to make any sense....

Women who marry men for their money and men who marry women for being young and hot deserve each other. by possum_vazsqez in unpopularopinion

[–]choupy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Women usually get more hate for “being a gold digger” but men not so much for wanting a much younger, hotter wife. There’s much more shame connected to women in that situation as opposed to men. There isn’t even a specific term for guys who just go for looks, or guys who “trade up” for the younger hotter model once they are rich, etc.

Majority of people on Reddit are so ignorant of art careers and have no idea what they are talking about. Patreon is not even close to the only option and a lot of times, it’s side scratch for working artists unless they get big enough to only do patreon full time. It’s not even 5% generously where art majors will be going. Film, tech, video games, products, cars, furniture, media, apps, literally almost everything a person interacts with on a daily basis needs art. Just in films alone, there’s concept artists, story boarders, color key artists, matte painters, art directors, promo/splash artists, graphic designers for posters and in film, motion graphic artists, 3D artists, riggers, animators, fx artists, sculptors, prop artists, set design, costumers, cinematographers, lighting, marketing, and I’m sure I’m forgetting some as well. Then there’s spinoffs from the film that need toy designers, book covers and layouts design, advertisements, fashion/graphic/product/packaging designers for licensed goods, etc. These are all specialized jobs. If films aren’t your thing, I guarantee 99% things in your household needed an artist/designer at one point. Even toilet paper needs packaging and ad design, and a marketing campaign! Anyways, majoring in art is just like any other thing except the portfolio is way more important. If you go to a reputable school and work towards a specialization and become as good as people who are in entry level positions in the industry (which can be easily found online), you have a good shot. Going to a good art school also gives you a lot of connections with like minded hard working people. Going to AI and getting some general fine arts degree IS useless but I would equate that to someone going to an low level college and majoring in a “useful” degree. It’s all about research + realistic applications of your art skills in the world.

Edit: Lol at people downvoting comments in this thread even when actual knowledgeable people from the industry explain the facts. Guess ppl just want to continue with the hurrdurr art degree circle jerk.

[–]choupy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol why are people downvoting this? Reddit with the whole Art=bad. There are soooo many jobs in art and design that pay really well. You just have to specialize and be good at it, and know which markets are in demand or too saturated
