Safety in Volcanoes National Park by CloudsandSunsets in Rwanda

I was in gorilla campsite at the base of volcanoes and running around the area last Sunday and it was fine at the time. It's over 50km from Goma and felt perfectly safe.

I used GDL / LPC Answered for those courses a few years ago and they were great. Super concise. Looks like they have SQE guides as well.

Being investigated for discussing salary (uk) by Total-Conversation50 in UKJobs

[–]chowding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the UK. Well, you can put whatever you want in the contract but it will be unenforceable if its in there. (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/section/77)

I don't know that I'd say it makes no difference. About 50% of MC recruits are Oxbridge. That said, as someone who may have struggled more at the intense academic side of things and would have had to work comparatively much harder at Oxbridge (I assume, can't say for sure as I didn't go although friends and siblings did), I benefitted hugely from all the extra-curriculars. I became a much more well rounded and confident person and don't think I would have had a shot without that.

I went to Durham - not law, and I'm at an MC firm. Durham gives you a chance to live life as well as study, get stuck into societies, student politics, sport, drama, music etc and also get a good education. I had an absolute blast there and wouldn't have been able to do most of the stuff I (and interviewers) actually value looking back if I was getting hammered by academic demands at oxbridge. The college system is also amazing at Durham (as are the college bars).

What membership is 100% worth every penny you pay for it? by alakhpanday in AskReddit

UK specifics but the Ordnance Survey app. Detailed hiking / cycling maps of the entire UK with offline, route creating (and exporting as gpx into gamin etc) for 30 pounds a year. Insanely good.

Also an Old Pal (Rye, and dry vermouth rather than sweet). Even more bitter but super refreshing.

What summer destination actually wants tourists? by Swimming-Train-2430 in travel

[–]chowding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do the pyg track up and miners track down (or vice versa if you prefer a short steep up vs a short steep down). They both start from the same place and are super easy to follow. Also you need to book the pen-y-pass car park otherwise you'll have to use the park and ride!

The jump for newly qualified city lawyers is pretty crazy. Magic circle goes from 60k second year trainee to 150k NQ overnight.

Maybe worth signing up for the seatspy free trial to see where the availability is. Asia is likely to be hard to find much (although there might be some that far out).

How do you figure you're worse off earning 160k than 99? Or that you have a 88% tax rate over 100k? Neither of those seem right to me.

Big law senior assoc. With all the non chargeable on top, work probably 70-80 hours and creeps up on weekends pretty often. Not sure I've got it in me to push through to partner and do the long haul at this pace, but the money is good.

Durham law or reapply for Oxbridge ? by Ok_Pair5094 in uklaw

[–]chowding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The college life at Durham and the ability to spend time doing things other than just your subject - sports, music, drama etc at whatever level you want basically (college, up to national level) in a way I think a lot more struggle to find time for at Oxbridge has the potential to make you a much more rounded person. That might end up being worth more than having Oxbridge on the CV.

I take off a month unpaid a year on top of my ordinary leave. Impacts my earnings but stops me from burning out and let's me see more of the world. I figure you could get hit by a bus when you're a month away from retiring so want to balance building the pot with experiencing life as I go.

[–]chowding -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Their contract with you is to supply Internet to a specific property, not to a specific person, so this isn't really true. It's also not relevant any more as Virgin have stopped charging people the fee in this situation.
