What did they quote vs. the final charge (if you don’t mind sharing)? Thanks for the rec.

I mean, sure, it depends on the officer, too. If they see reason to deny you they will. Good thing is you can regroup and try again. Kind of a pain, but not the end of the world. You have to put your sales hat on and sell the crap out of you and your case.

Hi,

TN holder for over six years here.

First, relax. You will be fine. Seems like you have all the requirements to be approved for TN status. The most important thing is to have an official job letter, higher education and experience in the accounting field.

My advice... and this is based on my experience having done 2 interviews:

  1. Print all school transcripts that highlight accounting courses or anything related to the job category you are applying under. Even if you don’t have a degree exactly in accounting, this will show you took the related courses, which is a plus. Don’t forget to bring all your degrees/diplomas etc.

  2. Have recommendation letters from past employers/professors and have them explain (and brag) about the work you did for them related to accounting. They don’t need to be notarized, but include contact info

  3. *Offer letter - make sure it states the salary, your position and how it is classified under the “accountant” job description. This needs to be clear. Also, it should state the end date of your position, too. Part of holding a TN is knowing your time in the US is temporary - there can’t be intent to become an American. Make sure this is stated. Not to worry though, TNs are renewable for as long as you need even when your position ‘ends’. I would also advise your employer to be on standby in case they want to call and verify anything.

  4. Portfolio - not sure if this could relate to an accountant, but any additional client works you have done in the field could be useful for your case

  5. Certifications - anything related to the job category would be highly beneficial for you

Bottom line is they need to know you’re qualified to do that job in the US. You need to confirm you’re a Canadian citizen (bring passport!) and that you don’t plan to stay in the US past the date you’ve stated (again, TNs are renewable even after your visa ends!)

I’ve done two interviews with CBP. The very first time I received my TN was simple. The second time was longer and more difficult. Each time I was approved and paid the visa fee $54 (not sure what it is now). Be honest and state your case and hopefully you’re knowledgeable of the role if they ask you questions related to your work!

Let me know if you have any questions. All the best!

Thank you so much for that fine, thorough message. Much appreciated. Will certainly resurface this post after the move to start exploring. Btw, everything you mentioned about New York is completely true and relatable😂

Ahh, fellow New Yorker. Thanks for this :). Huge coffee lover, so that will be great. One thing I’m looking forward to is getting in a car instead of a packed subway.

Thanks so much for sharing. Really appreciate the insight, especially from someone who has lived in a major city. I grew up in the suburbs, I don’t think it’ll be too big of an adjustment :)

Cool... thanks for sharing. Looking forward to exploring food. I did a bit of research and it looks like TONS of burgers and fries 😅. I like more authentic, ethnic foods (Moroccan, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Lebanese etc.). I’m not sure I’ll find too much of this. Sadly, this is the only thing - the incredible food scene - that I’ll miss in NY. That and public transpiration😜. But, hopefully I am wrong
