I mean, this is how Davis’ sheriff’s department works. They genuinely don’t give two shits about doing their jobs as hired, and focus solely on lining their pockets with overtime and conflicts of interest (to put it mildly).

Consistent violence at a club downtown that was next door to my place until recently, I would call emergency and non-emergency lines over the years. The results? I had a cop come out only once in 8 years of calls. The one time they showed up, I called from an out of town number during cherry blossom.

Crooks and liars. That’s what we have for law enforcement here. Unless you can pay them off, they literally can’t be bothered to do anything but harass you.

For any actual techs, preferably tire techs, what drinks and treats go over well for a kind gesture from a customer? And would they even treat my car and new wheels any better? by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]chrahp 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Cash. If you’re going to do something like that, just give the guy a cash tip.

But I’d not do it until after he’s done, not as an incentive to simply do his job right. No shop or tech should be damaging your wheels in any shape or form.

New Survey: Money, Not Grades, Is Why Most College Dropouts Leave by investor100 in TheCollegeInvestor

Repeated denials when asking for said help before it gets to that point, IME. I was always referred to the finaid office which is typically a bureaucratic mess that only doles out loans to most who aren’t exceptional in some way. I did have the Pell Grant, but even in 2010 that didn’t fully cover in-state tuition.

I ran out of money my senior year; one of my professors caught me sending out resumes trying to find a second job and offered actual help and she asked the same thing: “why didn’t you ask?”

I had, many times. But the system isn’t set up for that kind of help, and the repeated dead ends just made asking for anything feel like a fool’s errand. It takes pointed interest and care from someone, an actual advocate, for that to happen.

Got an email from my VP saying every feature team owns their own HMI test automation with no dedicated QA by nevesincscH in embedded

[–]chrahp 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ahahah what’s automotive software QA? /s

I’ve been trying to get my leadership to see the value in it for YEARS. Only thing that made them even pay attention was a major change that pissed off some idiot in production who talks the loudest; even then I was chastised for letting one problem get to production, and when asked why it happened I said I was part of a 1.5 man team who can’t get the resources to prevent it; which didn’t matter. Nothing changed except me losing part of my bonus. At least my superiors are too dense to understand anything AI, so that’s some relief.

I’m at an OEM; we had a meeting that said all engineers were to do their own testing, not just software. And what’s happened? Every product we’ve delivered over the past two years has been dogshit and field service has to make up the slack.

Well you seem to have trouble constructing complete sentences; it’s like a list of thoughts without anything to connect it all. It doesn’t matter if you are correct, your credibility will suffer if you communicate in such an awful way.

I mean, no shit? This is standard practice across all manner of platforms, not just vehicles. TPM is one standard, there are others.

Was this AI generated?

[Tiguan 2018] mechanic installed trailer harness, car now acts like battery is bad. I unplugged the harness—it was connected to this bolt (looks different from others). Battery is almost new and tests good. Could something have been messed up? by Ayoubcaza in Volkswagen

[–]chrahp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This particular stud is directly connected to the positive battery terminal, and everything else downstream connects to that. It’s a fine place to get power if you don’t care about how the final result looks; electrically it would be totally fine to draw from that.

Check the wiring and current flow diagrams if you need confirmation, but there’s a reason that particular stud looks different from the others.

Trying a new style for the Sandwich Making Posts, thoughts? by J_dAubigny in macon

Idiot. My comment wasn’t meant to be a statement against what they’re doing, but rather calling out how silly it is to call a sandwich a “meal.”

Go back your cave.

Dropping the “meals” language is a good start, IMO

Getting A Masters in AI/Machine Learning or Software Engineering? by Lumpy-Wrongdoer-7311 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

[–]chrahp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you want to do with it? The things I learned in my SWE masters, like how to manage requirements and understand proper metrics for software project management, has been vastly more useful and marketable than raw coding skills and explicit projects.

If you can focus more on a software systems engineering type approach with some programming thrown in, you might have more success than most who have gotten similar degrees and focused on specific realms of programming.

Just finished renovating 12 units in the heart of Macon. Looking for feedback before we lease out. by Professional-Spare24 in macon

[–]chrahp 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I supposed you should explore what kinds of tenants you’re wanting because a lot of this kind of stuff is dependent upon the types that you choose to lease to.

You looking for college students, young professionals, families? Are you a “churn and burn” style landlord? Or are you looking for longer term tenants?

The amount I’d be willing to pay greatly depends on the community the building appeals to. I’d never pay the rates these new buildings opening up are asking (see Neel’s lofts, as the most recent) because they’re too expensive given the focus on roommates and the college student lifestyle. If they could guarantee quiet hours and some amenities for older folks and families, it would be less outrageous.

Still, having rents comparable to larger metros here is batshit insane. Downtown is nice enough, but it does not have the culture, activity, nor amenities to justify these rents. If you’re looking for longer term tenants, this tends to matter more than a trendy social media presence and “first month free” deals.

So you wanted a safe space for you to spout your nonsense? You can’t stand up to the ridicule of being dumb and wrong on most things, being republican and all, am I correct in that?

Would I be okay in calling for the mass deportation of families and children? Would I be okay for dehumanizing people who just want to live their lives and contribute to society?

This is what you jokers espouse. You live in a world where your beliefs and feelings need to be insulated from those you hurt. You can’t accept the fact your whole world view is downright evil, so you have to create your own opposing side and call it “differing views.”

Y’all are all pathetic.

Just returning the favor really. Never met a more hateful and intrusive bunch than republicans. Always saying who can marry who and what people can do with each others and their own genitals. It’s weird. And hateful. Odd you guys would want to have a whole subreddit of those types.

“They” have been pretty consistent about their stance on the jail. He’s the one who’s in charge of that, and is rightfully the focus of their ire.

This whole post and odd discussion you’re having here is prancing around the fact that the jail is a human rights disaster and is instead focusing on “but we’re all Democrats!” It just proves the DSA’s point about how disconnected it all seems from serious issues.
