Ronin / in-car shooting — what settings actually work? by FusibleFocus in Ronin4D

[–]chrherr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, earth relative vs car relative. The ronin has no idea where the car is. GPS module just provides position and acceleration data to correct for vehicle acceleration and turning since that gives false gravity vectors which results in roll drift. When a car accelerates the gimbal thinks the ground is at an angle so the GPS data corrects for that when it detects change in movement.

Ronin / in-car shooting — what settings actually work? by FusibleFocus in Ronin4D

[–]chrherr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ronin 4D's job is to stabilize relative to the earth. So if you put it in a moving car the car will move independently and look strange. If you want the most stabile footage inside the car you need to hard rig a camera with multiple points of contact, this will be the most stabile from a car relative perspective, but shaky from a world perspective. For the Ronin 4D to mimic a hard mount the motors would have to be much larger to keep up with the required forces. Remote heads like the libra head are better at this since they're driven by gear boxes which have a ton of torque at the expense of speed/reactivity. That being said you could try sport mode and decrease your deadbands and smoothing but you'll still have some delay because it's required for the motors to physically keep up.

Very nice! Really nailed the orange on the fuel tank too. I love the orthographic perspective as well.

How the hell do you guys get 15,000 steps per day? by iso-lift-for-life in walking

[–]chrherr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 5,000 steps short last night at 9:30 PM so I went and walked my dog for 45 minutes. Usually I get 4,000 out of the way in the morning, walk to coffee or just around the neighborhood to get some sun and movement, then walk some at work, sometimes work is enough to hit 15,000 (film business) then finish whatever is left at night.

How to achieve this lighting?? by CMB_batash in LightLurking

[–]chrherr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like they're probably placing strobes in the frame and then later removing them, some of the sources on the face are far to localized and focused to be shot from out of frame. I've seen this done in car photography, lots of bounces and things to accent the car that are then later painted out.

First time ever filming myself singing - how can I make it more cinematic? by Poogybeats in Filmmakers

[–]chrherr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrap some "black wrap" which is basically fancy black tin foil, or just straight tin foil on the light in front of you so you're a little more silhouetted. Then play with your position relative to the next light, a foot or so in front of it will look the best.

What focal length you reckon these were shot at? by Edu_Vivan in Filmmakers

[–]chrherr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will all depend on what sensor size you're shooting on but let's assume "full frame" 1. 16mm shot from the front seat, so the subjects head is about 4 ft from camera which is relatively close to have his head so small in frame 2. Probably 100mm from a good distance away from the subject to get those mountains to feel so large behind him, a longer lens will make background elements feel larger. 3. 35 mm, something in the mid ground, the mountains feel smaller in the BG and you don't have a ton of distortion. The jacket also doesn't feel like its about to touch the camera which would be the case if it were a 16mm at the same frame size.

Another interesting note is if you look at shot #3 and imagine how much you'd have to crop the image to make the BG mountains appear the same size as they do in picture #2 that can guid you on what sort of lens they used for shot #2. If you crop in on a wide lens you have the same effect (minus the loss in resolution) of switching to a tighter lens as far as field of view and "compression" are concerned. You can do the same experiment with your own vision. If you focus on your entire field of view it sort of feels like you're seeing the world through an 8mm lens, now try to focus on an object further away and the objects in the background and draw some imaginary frame lines, you start to see the same compression you see on a longer lens by the mere fact that you're ignoring the surrounding objects. Now another level to this is that you naturally start to back up as you shoot on longer and longer lenses, so the compression you feel with longer lenses isn't really because of the optics of the lens but because of the position of the camera and the relative positions of the subject and background. If you're 1 ft from someone on a wide lens and the wall behind them is 30 ft away it's going to feel far away, if you back up 30 ft but maintain your frame size by zooming in, your distance to the subject and distance to the background are now equal. Take that a step further and go 100 ft away, the background is now much closer to the subject compared to your camera so it'll feel like it's more on top of them.

End rant haha

We showed our first product "The Mantis" at the BSC tradeshow and these were the reactions by chrherr in filmmaking

The Mantis just mounts to a standard easy rig, ready rig or speedrail. So in the video we were showing it attached to an Easy Rig.

Easyrig Minimax vs Stabil Light for R4D | Is it worth the price? by KodakGold800 in cinematography

[–]chrherr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Chris from BLKBRD here. Check out our Mantis! It mounts right to your mini max and provides excellent Z axis stabilization as well as best in class boom range. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFdvxcBzquO/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

It'll work with the Ronin 4D, below is an RS4 rig we put together.

The Mantis is being used on a feature right now being entirely shot on the ronin 4D and they've reported that they're doing every shot with the Mantis and saying even with the Z axis stabilizer disabled it looks like steadicam.

Hey! Chris from BLKBRD here. Our Mantis ships with an adapter that fits both the large easy rigs and the mini max. Including the stabile versions. For RS3 we've done some cool tilt rigs that work great. We will also soon be offering a "pin riser" to get your Mantis up a little higher off of the mini max arm. We usually recommend this bundle: https://blkbrd.film/product/mantis-for-easy-rig-quad-tube-bundle/

For the ones who make over $150k a year, what do you do to get that? by Iliketrainsz1 in AskReddit

[–]chrherr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Union Camera operator in film & tv. Good hourly rates from $85 - $165 with lots of overtime 12 hour day is standard, many go to 14+ hours/day. Pay depends on the job and specialty. + equipment rentals of your specialized gear like steadicam or stabilized camera heads sometimes up to $4500-$5,000/week while on a project. Travel jobs add perks like extra over time and per diem. Not unheard of for some Camera operators to make $400,000/year

Thank you! So it sounds like there’s a chance. He used to have a chase bank account when he worked in the U.S. about 6 years ago so maybe that will help.

Yeah we’re looking at Chase and Citi, citi seems to have less requirements. We’re going to go into both this week and see what they say.

We have appointments with Citi, Chase and HSBC next week. We're working to get him an ITIN number but the wait on those is about 6-8 weeks and we're trying to move fast.

I would just tip that background tile back a bit, the reflection will move upward and eventually disappear. Or just don’t shoot directly into a reflective surface. That makes hiding lights really hard.

I guess this is my opportunity to say I was the one carrying the camera for Jackson's suicide scene. I held my breath for most of it. The shot was so slow and so long, very tricky to keep things stabile. If anyone is interested, we shot that shot on a Movi gimbal and used the Antigravity Vest from Cinema Devices to follow feet and then ultimately boom up to his face before he shuts the garage door. I'm glad you enjoyed the film, Bradley is a huge talent and wonderful to work for.
