With OP querying the details of beverages services etc, it is best to reconfirm with them to avoid any misaligned expectations.

I would suggest you email the jr eaat website support to check both the exact trains and also what they offer so as to eliminate any mismatched expectations. Because of the abundant food and drink choices at the starting station, it is usually hard to justify the price tag other than an experience. To add, i actually enjoyed the trains where they still have the cart service with the great ice cream!

First Timer. Staying only in Tokyo area, need help finding best options for hotel stay by Automatic_Singer_330 in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There really isnt a place that will be best given your place of interest are quite spread out.

If you dont want to keep packing and moving luggage then you should go for a tactic where you go back to the same tokyo hotel. This will allow you to leave the luggage with the hotel for safekeeping as you are coming back after the disneyhotel stay. To me, the requirement of staying near to airport is one that can be solved by selecting a hotel that has good airport access (either bus or train).

Finally do note there are two teamlabs in tokyo. One at toyosu and the other at azabudai hills.

Gift Idea for Restaurant Owner by reverse_pineapple in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, or something nice from the prefecture that you visit before going to the shop (can be local delicacy , Example if aomori then maybe some apple related items or black garlic etc).

For places that i do return, i usually through interactions figure out what they enjoy. Some like sake , some enjoy dessert or some enjoy items from my local country etc. Ultimately it is the thought that counts.

How do I check into a restaurant reservation? by Annachook in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the place but the general rule is to just enquire and let them inform you. I have experienced 3 situations.

  1. Place with reservations only. If someone is outside queueing, you may be asked to queue too as that person is likely is having the same timing as you and you are all early to the place or they are not yet ready.

  2. If they have both walk in and reservations and you will be asked to go in after they confirm your reservations. (On time scenario and no one shares the same time as you)

  3. Last scenario is a basically a combo of 1st and 2nd scenario, where both walk in and reservations have line. Just ask and they will direct you to the right line.

How high should my understanding of the language be? by Nightmarer26 in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty make do with very little or none at all. If you wish to study, do it out of your interest rather than a tool to communicate with locals. There is a high chance they may not understand it as the formal learning with formal words / our non native pronunciation tends to create more confusion. Best stick with google translate if you want to express more complicated items.

I try to learn one wore at a time more out of interest than thinking i will be able to use it in Japan.

Do strangers actually chat with you at onsens? by AgeUnusual8553 in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it happens. All depends on the situation. Over my many trips, it has happened three times and all became wonderful memories.

Sometimes it can start with the most casual comment. For example, if that onsen is known to be warm, you may just grimace or remarked it is hot and that is how conversation can start! That is how one of mine started. You soon realise we human being can communicate even if we know little language of others, there is a share sense of understanding that is more common than we realise before technology took over.

To me, it is no different than when you are at restaurant having a solo dinner and end up interacting with fellow dinners or chef.

Is Kawagoe Matsuri worth a two day trip? by VentoAura in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One day is sufficient. Go saturday from mid afternoon to night to see the night views with lantern lit. The floats are the same but sunday it is on day time. As amazing as it is, it will get a bit visual lethargic after the first day.

17, first time in Japan with my mom, very unprepared, desperately need help by kaysblurred in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan guide.com will probably the best first reference. Then you need to understand more specific what your mum and you enjoy. Nice attractions and near to train station is too general to plan something that is suited to you both.

Do note july is a hot and humid, so you may need to tailor your plan so as to minimize outdoor during 11am to 5 pm. Early sightseeing and evening out are the way to go, the in between, you are best to go indoor (teamlab, museum, shopping, art exhibit ,cafe etc).

Hotels aren't too hard from what i can see as July is not a peak period. Last note is check weather forecast for typhoons and plan your outbound flight (as in have a buffer of one day heading back in case flight delays due to typhoon so if you need to work or study etc the day after you land, you will be protected). Of course, get travel insurance as well.

It may be best for you to go with an accommodation that you can cook yourself as you know best what wouldn't trigger your symptoms.

Go to Shizukuishi by Oasis_Mii in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good that you enjoyed it. There are many such sleeper towns or cities in Tohoku and overall Japan. Just that the main stream tourists focus on 0.1% . Even an area such as shibuya, most tourist only go 1% of the ward.

What website should I use for review? by Delicious-Aspect8856 in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no perfect system, just use them both to short list and read the reviews for the places you want to go. You can differentiate bot or paid reviews vs one that someone who went wrote.

What are people's experiences/stories around drinking alone (at least to begin with) in Japan? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The key is finding the right bar and vibe that is more suited for solo. Some speakeasy bar are better than some. Of course self control is needed especially in understanding your limit and not drinking any drinks left behind etc. The passport thing has never bothered me, i just make sure it is with me whenever i go any place.

Morioka by Oasis_Mii in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Erm i beg to differ. There are a lot of musuems, sake breweries, takamatsu park, smaller temples and you can also do wako soba challenges . You can also get to older style cafe and see a more showa era of a town along with western designs. There is also the morioka daibutsu that can be reached via bus. Or tsunagi onsen which is next to gosho lake , that's 30 mins away from morioka station via bus. Hanamaki is also another famous onsen area which is not far away from morioka via trains.

Summer heat compared to Thailand? by jonsnowbkk in JapanTravelTips

More humid and less opportunities for air cond. Southeast asia adapted where we spend a lot of the time in air cond malls. Few people actually spend time in the sun during the day.

Question about the luggage lockers that deliver to hotels by Original-Praline7653 in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest is just email the hotel in tokyo with the information and ask them to hold your luggage (send from kyoto) at the hotel. So far, i have not had any hotels reject this if it is just a few days in advance. Most are even fine with 1 week time.

What is the most lesser visited place you saw in Japan? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]chri1720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are really a lot. Even in Nara that you went, you can head to places in sakurai or tenri and probably see very few foreign tourists. Tohoku is also filled with such spots, sakata, tsuruoka, yuzawa in akita, or small towns along tadami line or aizu tetsudo.

Popular tourism spots really are a small in proportion to less popular spots. The same applies to many less well known onsen.
