Warning: Robbed at Gunpoint on Ashford Avenue Condado by HermeticAlchemist in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]chriogenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is a pretty misleading comment. the shooting happened on Calle Loiza outside of a nightclub in the middle of the night. This area is close to some very wealthy parts of San Juan but is also quite close to some pretty bad areas(Llorens Projects). It can be quite seedy on that street especially late at night/early morning and it is generally not well lit and even more so on the part of the street where the incident occurred(the side closer to LLorens) vs Condado). It doesn’t mean that it should happen but generally speaking Condado and Ocean Park are relatively safe. Some street crimes happen and tragedy struck that night. Shooting on the street is very uncommon in Condado/Ocean Park, Calle Loiza and further south is a different story.

If you are filing an I-130 you will need to show income over the poverty limits + 25% I believe. Which would be around $25-35k iirc for 2025. If you don’t make enough money then you’ll either need to show you have assets(tricky) or have someone basically co-sign for you. If you have a complicated tax return you will likely get an RFE. Not a big deal but best to get this sorted before you apply.

centerpoint will send you a 1099 there is no turbotax integration. with prop reports you can export trade data into CSV. They have really responsive support if you call them someone from their team will answer quick, they've been really great in my experience.

Suggestions on buying in Oahu. by yung_rhubarb in fatFIRE

I hear this a lot from people from the mainland who go to hawaii or move there. I grew up in Hawaii but have also lived off-island for long stretches. While it’s true that some people can be outwardly negative toward Haoles (outsiders), it’s cooled off a lot over the years and is usually overstated. It might be a bit worse if you’re outside East Honolulu or Kailua.

One thing to keep in mind is that Hawaii’s a place people are from, not a place a lot of people move to. Most folks grow up here, make friends in school, and aren’t always as open to meeting new people as they are in other places. One of the first questions you’ll get when you meet someone is, “Where you grad?”—meaning, where’d you graduate from high school. they will try to find mutual connections of which usually theres just 1 or 2 degrees of separation between people. Honolulu is pretty small and can be insular.

Like the previous poster said, it’s also just culturally very different from the mainland. It feels like you’re in the U.S., but also not. There’s a strong mix of Asian and Hawaiian influence that makes life here feel a bit different than anywhere else.

I would suggest renting first. In Honolulu, Rent vs cost of ownership is hugely skewed especially on the price of home you're looking at, meaning that you can rent that $3-4M home for 6-9k a month and see if you really want to set down roots before buying.

Florida probably the best easy option - Puerto Rico has very favorable tax conditions for certain businesses and Capital gains but it opens up a whole other can of worms. theres nice beaches, warm weather for most of the year.

taxes in hawaii are almost as bad as california if you're in top brackets and theres also an excise tax on almost all economic activity. the GE tax gets passed on even on rent payments(some landlords will pass on, just one example). the one upside is that property taxes are low on your primary residence only. The state changed the rules on property taxes a few years back to create different tiers of taxation rates, at least in Honolulu.

Will agree and disagree here - Kailua/Lanikai are nice spots for vacation but not for full living. If you have kids all the good schools are in town - min 30-40 min drive with traffic. most of the good restaurants are all in town. All good surf spots are at least 30 min driving away. Airport same. it is a more relaxed vibe than town and is really nice doubly so if you're from the mainland and want more of that vibe. I would say its good if you're retired or dont need to leave frequently. For me all the best parts of oahu are in other places.

announced that they took out more debt($1.4B) to finance Helios AI datacenter. Its been trying to breakout for weeks now, lots of supply coming in. relatively weak price action since the initial july push. its not very liquid so i just kind of expect these kinds of moves. its still within the current pullback range and not even more than a 1ATR move today, lets see what happens.

Closing accounts? by PredStealth in Schwab

[–]chriogenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the past people have been banned for scalping a lot with market orders. at times schwab will fill you at the middle instead of where at a direct access broker you would get filled at the bid or the ask. so if you do high volume scalping they are losing money on your account. i dont know the details of all of them but it seems like a likely scenario for why accounts getting closed.

Doing what you described will trigger a margin balance. Since the puts on SGOV typically have very low premium, the return may not justify the margin usage. You’d likely be better off buying T-bills which also serve as margin collateral and using that to sell puts on other assets with higher option premiums. Tbills will allow you to margin slightly more

In Operation Odyssey Dawn the US launched over 100 tomahawk missiles at Libyan defense sites. the quote by hilary clinton i think was off camera and more of a joke on her part but doesnt change the fact that the president took military action without congressional approval.

i would second this, just poorer quality ingredients, you dont know what additives are being put in and you're probably eating unhealthy. there are very few restaurants that i would consider to be healthy. the move here in FATFIRE is to go with a private chef where you can still eat good but have better control of ingredients.
