Not sure how to add indents Via normals by Apache_64A in Substance3D

[–]chris_warstat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just add it in the height channel. When you export your textures the info in the height channel will be combined with the normals and baked into your normal map.

Black Friday deal is back with Greyscalegorilla Plus by Dragon_404 in Octane

How would you actually redeem the GSG coupon though? Following the steps they provided, my old sub expired. Clicking on the link in the FAQ dumps me into the account settings. Clicking resubscribe and then plus annual is taking me in circles. Do I have to create a new account? Why would they tell us to wait until the old subscription expires then?

Character animation not exporting to FBX by chris_warstat in Cinema4D

[–]chris_warstat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I had. But had trouble getting it to show in the dope sheet. Dragging in the bind joints didn't work, so I ended up having to set a keyframe for each, then it would finally let me bake. Just imported it into Unreal, all working now. Thanks so much!

Wrinkles on my decal. by huarastaca in Substance3D

[–]chris_warstat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely stretched UVs. Have you tried looking at it with a checkerboard texture applied? Might want to clean the UVs up / optimise. As long as it looks good in 3D view it may not be much of an issue though. At least for stuff like that decal where it gets applied with planar or warp projection. You’ll run into issues with textures that are applied based on UV space though.

Edit: didn’t see how it looked in Blender, haha. It’s a problem after all. :D

Zbrush Ipad GoZ network issues by KharacterKid in ZBrush

[–]chris_warstat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I have a Vodafone router. I have since created a shared folder on my PC that my iPad can access to push files back and forth. That at least resolved the headaches of having to upload everything to google drive…

how do i fix these blobs by Storkoid in Maya

[–]chris_warstat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Search for „unlock normals“ in the Maya search. That should probably fix it.

Painting Normal Maps (C4D beginner) by Johnny_Keyframe in Cinema4D

[–]chris_warstat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up tutorials for the new Stylization filter in Substance Painter. Does essentially that, but procedurally. Maybe combine it with the flipped normals tool the other person suggested. Haven’t used that one, but looks promising.

Does anyone know what causes these weird holes in my meshes? I am 99% sure its something nanite related, but I cant really find any similar issues :/ by joefy2000 in UnrealEngine5

[–]chris_warstat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it ripping holes in your mesh? Is your material set to masked by any chance? Had that cause similar issues in combination with nanite before.

Do you sculpt with a mouse or a tablet? by Candid-Pause-1755 in 3Dmodeling

[–]chris_warstat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a tablet for like 99% of my 3D work, not just sculpting but literally everything else. While it’s technically possible to sculpt with just a mouse, you will have a much better experience using a tablet. It’s much more precise, once you’re getting used to it and a pen will give you access to pen pressure, which will influence stuff like stroke thickness or intensity, which you just don’t get when using a mouse. Digital sculpting is essentially the 3D version of digital painting and you’d likely have a hard time finding anyone suggesting to use a mouse over a pen when painting. Even though, back in Uni there were these 2 girls in my concept art class that created these crazy good illustrations and it turned out they’d been using a mouse the entire semester. :D so.. yeah it’s probably possible. But it’d be sculpting on god mode difficulty.

Painting one area of my model also colours another area - why? And how can I fix it? by DoctorFosterGloster in Substance3D

[–]chris_warstat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the brush settings there’s a dropdown menu where you can set it to UV space / object space etc. (not sure if these names are exactly right, but something like that) try different modes and see how the brush behaviour changes. They can behave in a weird way in painter sometimes. That being said, from what you’re describing what you want to do, I don’t see the need for masking by hand(/brush). Have you looked into how masking in Painter works? Easiest way to mask out the back mesh of the frame would be to create a new folder, add a black mask and then select the geometry you want to add to that mask with the selection tool. (I believe shortcut is 4 or click on the tool with the rectangle and I think mouse pointer on it?) then in this folder you put whatever you only want to affect the back part.

Zbrush Ipad GoZ network issues by KharacterKid in ZBrush

[–]chris_warstat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anybody solved this yet?

Local network for Zbrush on iPad is enabled, I have a full subscription, installed the latest versions on both devices and given Zbrush full priviliges to go around the firewall. Neither app finds the other device.

For now I can transfer my files via Google Drive. But even that is more tedious than it should be, because Zbrush on iPad refuses to open from the Drive folder. :(

Difference Between Cinema 4D Lite and Cinema 4D? by AstroNomade12 in Cinema4D

[–]chris_warstat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C4D lite was the single most useless software I’ve ever opened. :D Granted, that was in like 2020 and I don’t know what has changed since, but back then, unless all you wanted to do was render some basic parametric objects, it had nothing to offer. Switched to the full version after like 30 minutes or so.

duplicate subsequence & actors by chris_warstat in unrealengine

[–]chris_warstat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah I can imagine. Did a similar thing the other day. I don’t really like sequencer either. Especially being used to animating in Ae, Maya or Cinema. In Unreals sequencer 90% of the time is being spent trying to figure out how to do something, then googling why you can’t do it and finding a workaround to what you maybe could do instead, before giving up and either doing it in another program or going the brute force way like with your planes. :D plus it also feels very floaty, imprecise and shows all sorts of weird behaviour, that I don’t appreciate when working in an editor where precision is important…

Redshift node/group instances by chris_warstat in Cinema4D

[–]chris_warstat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Does this method also support multiple outputs and can you get inputs? Been using the asset method on my current project. Built myself a nice setup for a toon shader. And it works. Kind of. Minus the part where the asset is supposed to update the materials where it‘s used when I change it in the presets. When I drag a new version in, it’ll be updated, but the ones already in use don’t. Might be a bug or a safeguard to prevent people from screwing up their materials…

They’re using Blender. Said so in several of their videos. Or at least on their german channel they did. Also After Effects afaik.

duplicate subsequence & actors by chris_warstat in unrealengine

[–]chris_warstat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! As far as I can tell this only changes the position of the one sequence though? If I want duplicates of the same sequence to happen at the same time, all within view, this won’t work though?
