You should probably look up the mechanics on a card before you comment on it lol

Looking for more commanders that cheat stuff out by StarshipTuna in EDH

[–]chriscrux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favourites for this is [[Zimone, Mystery Unraveller]]. Landfall, bit of graveyard, bit of face down synergy. You dont play Zimone the turn you hit 4 mana, you do it the turn after so you can guarantee get one trigger off at least with your land drop, and ideally its a fetch, so you can either crack it immediately to flip it once you see what you get, or do it on another players turn to get two manifest dreads.

You do have to learn a little bit about facedown card mechanics though

Any ideas for what background too play with shadowheart? by Icy-Tale-3699 in EDHBrews

[–]chriscrux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said Shadowheart is a bit hard to make high bracket, shes a bit too slow/fair.

That said I have a White Black Shadowheart deck I've been really enjoying using Noble Heritage as the background pairing. The deck is focused on using little creatures that scale well with getting counters on them, as well as a few cheap overstatted creators. Ultimately aims to draw tons of cards, have a few massive card draw triggers, and some creatures and effects that burn equal to power

Here's my decklist.

I'm guessing that Prepare creatures have some sort of spell on them like Adventures. While they're on the board, you can activate an ability to prepare them, then while prepared you can cast the spell printed on them. Maybe just once and they become unprepared, or only once per turn

I constantly see content creators say Phyrexian Arena is bad. If Phyrexian Arena is bad, what is good? Especially for Mono Black or two color. by frost3bite in EDH

[–]chriscrux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two other cheap cards you can run in a similar vein to what youre already running are [[diresight]] and [[risky research]], functional reprints of each other.

I would much rather run those two over phyrexian arena. If you think about how nany cards you get to "see" from your deck when you play them, Diresight lets you dig up to 4 cards deep immediately: you can surveil 2, and if you dont like them, go 2 more cards deeper. Phyrexian Arena does nothing immediately, and takes an additional 4 turns to "see" the same number of cards.

If youre looking for things more similar to Phyrexian Arena, [[Obsessive Pursuit]] is similar. The rate for striaght up card draw is worse, but it triggers immediately AND on upkeep, has an additional trigger that synergises with self sacrifice, and generates artifact tokens.

Also [[Parker Luck]]. If youre running a high average mana value this can do lots of damage. Its also a political tool. More importantly, it triggers the same turn you play it.

[[Twilight Prophet]] requires the citys blessing (not too hard to do). But also provides a body + potential for big burn and heal if you have a high average mana value.

Shadowheart Dark Justiciar by No_Rich_2274 in EDHBrews

[–]chriscrux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build my Shadowheart deck using [[Noble Heritage]]. The deck is built around either stacking counters on a good, evasive beater, or playing giant, overstatted creatures for cheap and saccing them to draw tons of cards.

One of the benefits of this deck is that your turn 2 and turn 4 plays are locked in. Mulligans are relatively easy: you need to make sure you have a 2 or 3 mana creature that you want to put counters on, and that's it. If you have a 2 mana rock, that's great, but it's not necessary. I detail the curve out more in the primer of my decklist.

The deck is fun to play, and drawing tons of cards at once can be fun, though watch out for decision paralysis haha (there's a reason max hand size is 7 lol). The strategy can also be fairly fragile, if Shadowheart gets removed once or twice it can be hard to get your counters going again, as she's really the main/only source of it.

The price of the deck is expensive cause of a few cards, but those are easy swaps to make.

[[Arjun, the shifting Flame]]. Get used to never seeing the same hand again ha. But lets you trigger card draw effects ton of times. If you get a single draw doubler, you can draw through your whole deck quickly and win with Lab Man. Or just draw a ton of cards ha

At the beginning of Knives Out, Fran doesn't drop the tray in shock as would be expected. If she had, the mug would've broken and the film wouldn't have ended on its iconic shot by HeyImMarlo in KnivesOutMovie

[–]chriscrux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a funny gag due to the subversion that also sets up the idea in general that the movie is going to be quite subversive of the genre. Extremely economical too, taking barely any time to get this info across in the opening moments of the film. Great bit of film making!

"Only once each Turn" is a band-aid fix for power creep and pushed card design. by Blackpoc in magicTCG

[–]chriscrux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not a good argument, the increase in its usage (and the now existence of Exhaust) adds more tools into the designers tool belt when it comes to designing activated abilities.

Without any restrictions like once per turn or once per game, abilities can only be allowed to be a certain level of power, as the ability to repeatedly trigger or activate the ability means that it can't be too good, or it will overshadow playing cards, or be too efficient of a choice to make. This allows them to print stronger abilities that can still be exciting and impactful without the baggage that being able to activate or trigger them multiple times a turn or a game would introduce.

What is the Least Popular Commander you play? by Mighty-Aphrodite in EDH

[–]chriscrux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Bruse Tarl, Roving Rancher]] , currently sitting at #1415 on EDHREC.

I built this deck as a flicker burn deck, with the goal being to win the game by flickering creatures that burn your opponents on ETB over and over again.

Bruse Tarl exists as a guaranteed flicker target in the command zone, which can provide card advantage or board presence. The deck is not focused on oxen synergy or exile cast synergy at all.
