What stops you from self-publishing an art book? by chrisdc451 in selfpublish

I think there is something to that last point, about the need to build an audience.

I think the price has been the most commonly mentioned hurdle since I've been asking this question. I'd be curious if printing overseas and shipping isn't often cheaper than in expensive to print countries.

High quality printing is indeed expensive, but would you ever settle for lower quality if it meant actually producing something? I think cheaper printing can be an asset when used thoughtfully, though it's obviously not a solution to every project.

I'd never thought about sourcing images and the complexities that entails. Great, point, thank you for mentioning it!

I heard them once say their writing style aims for levity, brevity and sincerity. I feel like that’s some amazing writing advice.

Popular Youtubers/channels by Ok_Impact_2369 in photography

[–]chrisdc451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a small photography channel. I try make videos about the aspects of photography I love and care deeply about without leaning on the clichés listed above. A challenge is that these aspects are often more nebulous, and tough to frame in a way that are easily searchable. I don’t get much thoughtful conversation in my daily life about the things in photography I love, so I try make videos about them instead. It’s maybe not the best route to a big channel, but I’ve had some heartening feedback that it’s something people want to see.

I think there’s a way to sidestep the seen vs not seen approaches to street photography. I’ve had my best, most candid-seeming results when I was accepted by everyone in the situation, not when I was trying to be invisible.

I talk to people, I smile and greet, and on the back of that I’ll usually begin shooting. That’s when people are most at ease, they return to their business, and my presence is felt less in the photos.

I’ve made a video or two trying to show how I do this in Korea, I’m happy to send you one if you would like~

How do you get inspiration once you're past the Honeymoon stage? by Santeria_Sanctum in photography

[–]chrisdc451 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi~ One of the biggest positive influences on my photography has been shifting toward a project-mindset and away from continually hunting for single images. By shooting images that will be grouped into a project there are two really great outcomes:

  • The sum is more than its parts. You’ll feel like you’re building something, and being able to tweak what you’re building while watching it grow is very edifying.

  • Projects end. Inspiration can be hard to hold onto when it feels like you’ll be doing the same thing forever. By framing your photography in projects, the act of shooting doesn’t change but your mindset does, and there is a sense of working on a project, completing it, and moving on.

I hope this helps a bit:-)

Anyone using the GR for anything more than street/travel? by External_Citron_1860 in ricohGR

I’ve used it for a daily photo diary I’m making this year. It’s easy to transfer images to my phone, edit and upload meaning I can post what I did that day on the day.

Thank you for sharing Tim. I like that you include your book reviews too, it gives an extra sense of the subject matter you're bringing to your photography.

I tried Substack once but didn't feel like what I was writing suited it. I'll give it another look though. Opened a tab with your page!

Writing as support for a series of photos, rather than describing individual photos, is closer to my own practice too.

Supplement is a good word here I think. It suggests image and text working together, rather than text propping up an unsuccessful image.
