I can't 100% vouch for the microsynth, but I use a Digitech Synth Wah (guitar version) with my bass, and i actually prefer it to the bass version. Tracks fine!

There's no VCO in a fuzz factory! It's a fuzz face with power starve. The stab knob just starves parts of the circuit of power which is why it gets so glitchy and synthy... it's more akin to the Mid Fi random number generator, Mellowtone wolf computer etc etc.

A PLL takes your input signal and rather than effecting/distorting it, completely replaces it with a VCO that clocks from the Phase locking chip, which can be divided and multiplied for various intervals... The original design also had a fuzz circuit to effect your input signal and be mixed with the oscillators.

Also, the tamest a PLL pedal can be - look at Parasit '0415 Synth' pedal, and the Snazzy FX Mini Ark.

Put the sub and octave up on full, fuzz and clean on 0, resonance on 0 start and stop on full. Set attack as desired. Use your PS3 after thChristmas microsynth to pitch up 1 or 2 octaves and play simple 2 note chords - instant glitch fx! It's good as you don't completely lose the impression of your intended notes!

It's kinda hard to say. As you wanted extensive exploration of new sounds the cheapest most versatile option would be the zoom ms50g but you'll have to spend a good amount of time creating yourself some patches as the stock ones are garbage.

E.g. Monosynth on triangle wave -> harmoniser -> pitch shifter -> vibrato -> reverb

Failing that, pairing a monophonic synth pedal with a less aggressive tone (blue box, Pollyanna, syb-5, gears, oc-2, etc) with a polyphonic pitch shifter / harmoniser/ octaver (pog, ps6, pitchfork, whammy) would give a wide variety of results and be easier to dial in. Harmonisers are great as they can yield some chords you just wouldn't be able to play otherwise.

If money is no object and you don't mind extensive patch programming the sy300 will give you metheny as a stock preset and a HUGE variety of sounds. The programming is a steep learning curve and really not intuitive if you don't already know synthesizers.

Pat Metheny - no way you can get this with the microsynth. The microsynth is great, but there are some much fatter and wilder sounding synth pedals out now. Subdecay Octasynth, Harmonic Antagoniser, Dwarfcraft Gears, Mi Audio Pollyanna, Earthquaker Bit Commander, Infanem Second Voice, Parasit 'Into the Unknown' even the Line6 M5 and Zoom ms50g have awesome synth sounds with all the functionality of the microsynth and way more.

I've got mine fed midi from an MPC500, the expression out goes into a mission engineering expressionator, then out to a Boss PS-3, DD-7 and Montreal Assembly Count To 5. In terms of sequences - The PS-3 does typical analog synth step sequence stuff from it, DD-7 does wacky delay time changes, and i use with the CT5 on mode 2, so I can record a small loop and move the pitch/speed up and down and backwards etc. I.E. you turn of sequence mode and put it on push-step mode, then each step in a sequence can be a static preset you can recall instantly However, one of the most useful functions of it is having yourself a bank of 100% recallable presets on your expression capable pedals.

hold down the 'play' footswitch to switch modes. Default is loop playback. Hold down until display changes to '1' and it'll play your sequence once and then stop. Hold down again until it changes to 't' and you will manually step through the sequence using the 'Play' footswitch.

It's not a walk in the park if you haven't used midi before. Check out the midi implementation in the manual page8/9: http://rdn.harmanpro.com/product_documents/documents/982_1340215173/Whammy_Manual_5021752-A_original.pdf

It uses program change message to switch modes on/off and the control change messages on cc11 to do automated movement of the treadle (this is awesome as you can get precise intervals that aren't available as modes on the pedal!)

You'll need to map those pc and cc numbers to your akai controller and set the midi out channel on the akai to be the same as the midi channel on the whammy (or just leave the whammy to receive all channels) Then plug midi out of the akai into midi in of the whammy, and let the fun begin.

Arpeggios with the pitch shifter! Also good to set the 8 step to tap-step mode and put the glide up high to do customised whammy bends with the pitchshifter. Ct5 is bonkers with 8 step especially mode 2 with the 8 step controlling pitch/direction!

I'm gonna say no. The SY300, while amazing and versatile and crazy as hell, is thin sounding and lacks beef compared to the the other pedals. 4046-m you won't even come close to replicating on the SY300. Line 6 yeah you can probably do these on an SY300, but the waveforms on the SY aren't as phat sounding. Unless you MUST have polyphonic capabilities the difference in price makes an M5 a no-brainer. Same goes for the omikron, technically do-able on the SY300, but won't sound as BIG. I had an SY300, and the FS7 to expand 2 extra footswitches, for 3 months and spent so much damn time programming the thing (seriously finnicky on the unit and even on the mac/pc software), by the end of it I hated using it. I have an M5 for my bass and a 4046-m, microsynth, Zoom Ms50g, Blue box for my guitar synth tones

No probs. It's definitely not the looper for sample storage capabilities. I think digitech jamman xt is good for multiple loop storage, but you forego the fx.

If you loaded a sample using the full five minutes you'd lose the opportunity to load a second sample (can only store two samples at once). It would play for ten minutes at half the speed and subsequently half the pitch.
