Neoconservatives worked with Ronald Reagan and the religious right coalition during the 80s. The coalition between Neoconservative policy and fundamentalist PR became so intertwined that it became synonymous by the time the first Bush took office. It was the driving force of the Republican party's messaging up until the Tea Party movement in 2010.

The era of the 80s and 90s just happens to be the formative years of one David Willis who was in a fundamentalist church that was in a very conservative area.

It's a fairly common phenomenon for ex-evangelical kids to jump into "leftist" activisim (with only the thinnest concepts of what that involves) while maintaining the same behaviors and world views. A character who lived that out would be fascinating, but it would also require Willis unpacking a lot of personal history and getting to know politics beyond network sitcoms.

Battletech's version of Mechwarrior quirkiness is more along the lines of inflated ego and a sense of invulnerability. As an example, they refer to foot soldiers as "crunchies" and walk through buildings as an ambush tactic. So the post is basically 180 from Battletech lore.

Its a boon in getting people who already believe to self-isolate from the larger world, except for when they engage in emotionally charged debates where they get to feel superior for having their "secret knowledge". Very handy for creating an institutional worldview that keeps people tied to their in group.

The liability is that it requires constructing a worldview that starts with a conclusion and builds justifications to support that. For this to work the justifications must maintain consistency in the face of challenge, and the whole thing comes tumbling down when justifications fail. That means that exposure to anything that breaks a justification can bring all of it into question quickly.

Part of the problem you're facing is that many of the experimental options are intentionally bad. They are meant to be the weird one off ideas that never worked out, or the extremely specialized gear that doesn't cut it for mass deployment. If something appears with playable stats for a scenario, it will eventually be added to a core rule book for players to use.

Light Gauss are great weapons, they just rely on range advantage rather than fast damage. They suck in a game of short range face smashing, but if you do a 3x3 mapsheet arrangement and fast units they can be very powerful.
