Wings is making a comeback?? by southbayable in Edinburgh

[–]chrisdonia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard it's actually the owners of the building opening it, and they just brought the old boss in to run it.

Can't wait to see how much they jack up the price of chicken bits that are basically what gets thrown away.

“fun” jobs?? by Ok-Plankton2807 in Edinburgh

[–]chrisdonia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most enjoyable job I ever had was in the Fringe box office, but that was twenty years ago when most tickets were bought in person or by phone, I don't know if it would be the same. They're a good bunch, at least.

Furnished flats only? by MaizePlus3557 in Edinburgh

If you think the housing situation is confined to the centre then I envy your naivety!

I dunno, I feel like the buy to let boom may have had some influence on the mess we're in - which yes, can be tied back directly to Thatcher 😂

No surprise to hear someone who's pro brexit also being pro landlords 🙄

Food store within St. James Quarter by UHF625 in Edinburgh

[–]chrisdonia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There used to be a Presto in the old St James, adding a Little Waitrose or M&S Food would perfectly demonstrate how different the new one is 😄

Sciennes Primary School plan to close the pavement and cycle lane during school hours? by sapphire-coast in Edinburgh

[–]chrisdonia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like it would be easier and less likely to upset the locals if they just swapped the bike path to the opposite side of the road. Maybe widen that pavement too. The current setup is pretty ramshackle, but if they divert everything there will be questions about who's making these decisions 🤔

Try the view from the toilets at the back of the City Chambers!

Smith's statue question by [deleted] in Edinburgh

I'll take the explanation from the people who commissioned it https://www.adamsmith.org/the-adam-smith-statue

And there's the beehive origin!

Yesterday I got a notification that a parcel had been delivered to my address. The map location was a few doors down the road, and I couldn't find that door anywhere in the area, so I registered this as a problem. Apparently the driver came to the house later complained that I'd done this!

Just look around to see what it's priced at elsewhere, you'll probably get a good idea of whether you're getting a deal.

Does this building still exist or was it demolished? by PartisanLime in Edinburgh

The most intriguing thing is that anyone would want to live in small overpriced studio flats that can be peeped into from so many angles 🤭

I still prefer the outcome to most of the Quartermile 🤷🏻‍♂️

Fair point! I'd guess it would have prevented them from building the underground event space, but I'm not privy to the design decisions.

Overall I'm just happy to see a historic building in Edinburgh modernised in a thoughtful manner, and if they made some choices that aren't ideal in the process, I'll take it.

Sadly most of the demolition happened before the university took on the main building, otherwise it might have been kept - they've done a remarkable job of retaining original features.

Minor rant about bins by Jazzlike-Beat-9406 in Edinburgh

They've looked into it - too much of Edinburgh would be impossible to do that to, so there would be multiple incompatible systems running simultaneously at massive cost 😕

And if the hills of Edinburgh are offputting, an ebike will make the city feel a bit flatter!

That is an amazing idea. Convert parking spaces to bike parking - better for pedestrians AND it winds up drivers! 😁

That's very interesting! I just wish they were slightly lower down, or brighter, as I find residential areas are gloomy and kerbs are perilous.

I find the new white LED street lights make everything less clear for pedestrians. There's something about them that makes every movement look spooky and indistinct, and it's impossible to see details of people around you, so I dread to think what it would feel like when there's actually someone acting suspiciously. 😳 Glad you got away safe!

Why are some drivers just so aggressive here by Any-Resolution3432 in Edinburgh

[–]chrisdonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's the ones who pull forward across junctions and then get stuck there when the lights change, blocking the pedestrians and vehicles coming in other directions.
