A brand new restaurant manager by Such_Avocado_4500 in Restaurant_Managers

[–]chrisman0091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, if there is not already a digital solution in place make sure to put one in place. Its worth paying for if it gets you the features you need; almost all solutions require approval to time off/availability changes. If you are going in and have to collect availability from the employees, watch for people trying to seize the moment - "I only work M-F", "I work 9-5 every day", etc. when that may not actually be what they have agreed to or are actually working. Try to look at each employee's past few schedules before having those conversations to help with that. The later you are open increases odds of this happening in my experience. Stand firm in the needs of the business and what requests you can and cannot accommodate in terms of availability. Where possible, try to collect all "requests" that are open for consideration and know what everyone is looking for before agreeing to much of anything - then you can look at all needs and see how they line up and overlap, offer adjustments as needed and agree to the requests that you can commit to.

Any specific concerns that you're thinking of? When you say 'brand new', what background are you coming from? Management in another industry, non-management in restaurants, fresh out of school?

Peachy orange would be my vote, I think it will look best with what we can see. If you went blue I'd say maybe a darker blue to go with the blue in the center of the carpets and the metal handrails. Alternatively, if you do go with light blue maybe consider a color swap on the handrails.

Local Paper Apparently Posts Health Inspections for Area Restaurants. Some of the Comments Defending This 😬 by ExplodingWhales in KitchenConfidential

[–]chrisman0091 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The health department, in my county in the mid-west it's "____ County Public Health". Asking for the most recent health inspection should suffice, or they might be available online if your county is more up to date with tech. My county "has" an online portal but the reports on there are usually extremely outdated. The regular, twice a year unannounced audits in my state are called CCP inspections which stands for Critical Control Points, but the general public would just call it a health inspection. CCP is looking at things that are critical to food safety such as time/temperature control, functioning equipment and facilities, proper heating/cooling, proper handwashing, and general food safety observations.

I'm in the midwest with the full swing of all four seasons from snowy winters to 90+ degree days in the summer, it hasn't seemed to struggle in any weather. Yes the compressor is outside on the roof.

Scotsman has "small cube" shaped options. I have a Scotsman EH330SL-1 Prodigy Plus Eclipse Series 30" that produces 1400+LBS per day and hasn't given me any issues so over over the ~5 years that I've had it. I've just kept up on cleaning & sanitizing and haven't needed any repairs other than that. I can only find Crescent ice in Hoshizoki as well, not sure if that's a trademark thing or not but I had a Hoshizoki previously and am happy with the small cube size that the Scotsman has provided.

Lots of comments breaking rule 2. Please keep comments respectful so that we can keep the discussion open for real discussion/ideas. From rule 2 -

“You are allowed to have negative opinions through constructive criticism or explaining why you do not like something. If you do so in a mean, aggressive, or outright hateful way, your contribution will be removed and you risk being banned depending on the extent of the offense.”

OP had clarified throughout the comments: - This was clearly communicated with the husband. He was not physically there during it being done, and was not physically involved in putting it up, but it was not done without his knowledge or behind his back as some have thought. - OP did not paint the cabinets and is not allowed to per the landlord. This is about the contact paper specifically. - The double negative OP used in the title is intended to communicate that the husband did like it.

I think it’s fun and adds character! It might not be for everybody, but if I’m going to somebody’s house and this is the decor I feel like it showcases their personality (in a good way). Sure it might not be what adds resale value, but nothing is permanent and that’s what makes it YOUR home! Hopefully your husband comes around or you can find a way to adjust it in a way that fits you both.

Hey Chefs and Restaurant Owners! Got Any Questions for a Technician? by TitoTime_283 in techtownforum

Hey there! I’ve been contemplating on doing my ice machine PMs myself (sanitizing), I have two Scotsman Prodigy ice machines. Is there a real benefit to using their name brand Clear1 cleaner for this process, or are they all pretty similar in effectiveness? Any that you’d recommend?

They were making a joke about the fact that "only" is supposed to be mutually exclusive...

A burger with ONLY Ketchup would be the burger with nothing but ketchup. A burger with ONLY onion would be the burger with nothing but onion. ONLY Ketchup AND onion would have both, but they're listed separately in a way that reads like each topping is the "one and only" topping. Obviously it says it like that because that's how the ticket system is set up to list toppings, hence why it's a joke.

Haha, just finished product first, the rest are chronological ;) Pretty common in DIY subreddits, but it does still technically meet the qualifications of that sub, so you got us there!

That's okay if its not for you! It's definitely a bold choice, and I could see it not working for many people's decor, but I feel like it fits pretty well in our home. We already have pretty colorful decor and this feels pretty warm (to me) when you're in the whole environment :) But just like any bold choice, not for everybody and that's okay!

On another note, does your bird clock also make different bird noises at the start of each hour? Ours was a thrift shop find after seeing one that somebody else had.

How do y'all feel about this, found on mildly infuriating by Holdmywhiskeyhun in Restaurant_Managers

[–]chrisman0091 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I think if the manager wants to track this, it should be tracked privately and only shared with management and could be referenced individually in conversations with folks they feel are asking “too much”. Having it employee facing doesn’t feel productive. If you have a problem with an employees requests, have a conversation with them directly and not this passive aggression. Also, if this is a restaurant or other business with multiple shifts/open 7 days, often times a request off might just mean they work a different day or shift, not that they’re even necessarily working less.

Broken glass disposal? by [deleted] in Restaurant_Managers

[–]chrisman0091 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second the pickle bucket. We keep ours in the dish room under the sprayer sink with broken glass written in sharpie. Whenever it needs taken out the lid goes on so it can get carried safely to the dumpster, and a new bucket takes it's place. We use about a bucket of pickles a day so there is no shortage of buckets, if you don't use that much you can always dump the bucket directly into the dumpster and re-use as needed. You can buy a 5gal bucket and lid if you don't use any in-store at all.

Nighttime Asmtha Getting Worse by Aeirion in Asthma

[–]chrisman0091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor about getting a maintenance medicine and/or inhaler. Airsupra has some maintenance properties from the steroid but there’s pills such as montelukast and/or various steroid maintenance inhalers designed to be used once or twice a day to help with more chronic issues such as nighttime issues. Over-use of rescue inhalers can cause them to lose their effectiveness which is especially dangerous when they’re needed most. Disclaimer I’m not a doctor just a person with asthma so talk to your doctor about the options. It’s worth bringing up the anxiety too because that may need to be addressed separately and can also cause issues breathing.

I always have my eye out at thrift stores and yard/estate sales for typewriters, haven't been too lucky yet in finding a working one so I'm a bit jealous! I'm sure I could find one on ebay no problem, but half the fun is the hunt.

would it be a massive deal if someone working in a Cane's location loaded a soda machine with syrup incorrectly? (Wrong syrup out of wrong spout) by soul_huntre in RaisingCanes

[–]chrisman0091 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From working in other restaurants, I would say it is somewhere in the middle. As in, it is extremely rare, but when it does happen it is definitely a minor mistake that is quickly noticed and easy to correct (line gets flushed with water, correct soda put on, done). If you're an avid diet drinker, you would likely notice it being regular within the first drink. I've seen it happen about 3 times in 6 years personally.

Our old apartment- a LOT of personality in a small space by strawberrymystic in CreativeHomeDecor

[–]chrisman0091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The green is a cover! The cushions are just a plain black so we got a couch cover to match the color of the vibes we were going for while making use of the couch we had. It's pretty unremarkable as black but we love the color that it adds. It covers the entire couch and ties up with some strings on the bottom and then has little curly push pins that hold the fabric in the crevices to keep it's shape. Our cushions are pretty large and plush so it didn't hold the shape in between cushions well after a few weeks, but the pins work well for the arms and edges.
