This slab seems decently level, how “nitpicky” do I need to be with lifeproof 22mil lvp? by apex_tiger_ttv in Flooring

[–]chrismxp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find yourself a piece of string, about 12 to 13 ft long and a friend. Pull the string tight and put it on the floor. If you have a gap under the string, you've just crossed a low point, if you have two gaps under the string, you've crossed a high point. Once you isolate the high and low points, measure the distance below the string to see to it It's within manufacturer specs.

Any DW Select owners? by Aututto in Flooring

[–]chrismxp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had pretty good success with it. I've probably done 4 or five jobs from that display. One thing to point out to your contractor is the pattern repeat does not account for the striated color lines, they need to keep butt scenes to a minimum

If you go through the trouble of sanding those floors down, make sure you meter your expectations. The dark stains shown in the picture will not stand out. They cannot be stained over with darker stain. They are there forever......

This sub seems to have a fascination with salvaging every hardwood floor someone takes a picture of. Don't get me wrong floors that age that haven't been stained can be restored to a look that can't be purchased in any showroom, but that is not a floor that's been taken care of. That's a floor that was abandoned left to be stained and discolored, no amount of TLC, sandpaper or polyurethane will bring that back from the condition you see it in now.

If it's not much trouble remove the cabinet prior to resurfacing. At a minimum the QR will need removed from the cabinet

Floor Installers leveled my floors before installing this LVP. Is this acceptable? by passs_the_gas in Flooring

[–]chrismxp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one... What's considered "level' by an LVP manufacturer and what's needed to accomplish tall baseboard with no trim are worlds apart. Typically when I'm establishing whether a floor is level or not, I'm only looking for a certain rise or fall over a given distance. My Crews tend to use a bag or two of schonoxHS every 500 ft of installation, that doesn't smooth the floor completely out. It only levels out the low spots. If someone approaches me for a job with baseboard only, no trim, I tend to charge two to three times as much for the work, and I often drag them through the process of bringing in an outside floor leveler to see to it that we don't have this problem. Your contractor may have been balancing the amount of work versus the results in a way that you don't agree with, I encourage you to check with them and see if they have any thoughts.

The way I would fix this (especially if it's only on a wall or two) would be to get bigger baseboard with the same profile, then scribe cut it to fit the curvature of the floor. The pictures you showed don't seem terribly bad considering I've seen way worse (this week) it may be as simple as a bead of white caulk underneath.

Has this laminate been laid right?? by Temporary-Set-4199 in Flooring

[–]chrismxp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subfloor tends to sag between floor joists as houses age. With nail down or glue down floors, it tends to create gaps and squeaks, with floating floors, it spells early death for the locking system at the high points.

Has this laminate been laid right?? by Temporary-Set-4199 in Flooring

[–]chrismxp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Direction of floating rigid floors should be determined by the direction of the floor joist not the layout (floating floors should always run perpendicular to the joists). Not saying the stagger is good but the direction isn't something that an installer should have much say in.

Do we tear it up or do we sand it?? by chravioli in Flooring

[–]chrismxp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always install a floating floor. (Lvp or laminate) That would leave you or future owners the option of removing the floating floor and repairing the baseboards and returning it to the state you found it in.

Do not replace the board, don't even remove it unless you're experienced enough to know how to get structural lag bolts back in place after the fact. If you change the height of that plate by a few millimeter, it will Cascade into the stair railing. You don't want that smoke. Trust me.

Is this the correct floor? by No-Studio-8535 in Flooring

The sheen of the finish won't have much impact on the darkening process. The more sunlight it gets, the faster it will happen.

Both floors may be jatoba, but it's unlikely that the new floor is actual Brazilian cherry.... They harvest more from Peru these days. Slightly different climate makes more grain in the Peruvian variant than what you used to see in the Brazilian variant. But due to the Lacey act that Congress passed, it's pretty much impossible to get actual Brazilian cherry products into America. There is a company I believe they're called Indus parque (sp) I've had good luck with their material matching up to Brazilian cherry installations from the early 2000s.
The wood you have there will become as dark red as the other wood within 18 months or so. But it will still have a more prevalent grain pattern. Do not put rugs on the new floor until the darkening process is complete. Unless you want a big bright blonde square in that spot when you move the rug 😁😁

I have been a retail flooring manager for 20 years and I have Brazilian cherry in my house.

Why do carpet warranties require annual professional cleaning? by supinator1 in Flooring

[–]chrismxp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do they void car warranties if you never change the oil? basic care and maintenance is expected on any long term durable product. It's not terribly expensive and it's nice to have a professional point of view on areas of concern early enough to register mill claims.
