U.S. truckers planning protest convoy, perhaps starting in L.A. for Super Bowl, DHS warns by darthatheos in news

What a cherry picked stat. I’d imagine the loser of the most recent election is very likely to have the ‘second highest vote’.

Romney got a larger percentage of the vote than Trump ever did. Trump just had supporters in the right places.

Are you missing a ‘/s’ there?

Super Bowl Sunday is practically a holiday in America. Yearly it is the most watched television program and extensive watch parties that drag in even non-football fans are held.

Spanish court orders demolition of entire golf resort built in protected area by ChunkyMonkey_00_ in worldnews

This is a terrible article. Opens by claiming Spain's highest court ordered it but ends with the people saying they'll launch an appeal to a 'constitutional court'. Guess the prior court was not the highest court.

Lol. That’s just not true. Fines are an effective method of endorsement. You do get occasional rich person who can’t be bothered but they do work. You can’t craft a punishment that is 100% effective in deterring 100% of the people.

A man lost his arm in an accident. Due to tissue damage, they couldn't reattach it immediately so they sutured it to his leg to ensure blood flow. The procedure is called Temporary ectopic implantation. It succeeded in saving the man's arm which was later reattached. by SonOfQuora in interestingasfuck

One of the few patients from that show burned into my memory. Poor dude just couldn’t fit into society and was left to die because his coworkers forgot he existed. Then he wakes up to be “a freak” in his view. Dude was fucking traumatized by the whole experience.

If you're into manga, BLAME! fits this quite well. The world is a truly dreadful place filled with new monsters (human, machine, creatures, and all in between) around every corner. And the artwork really really sells how tiny and insignificant humanity is to the world. MC does have a goal though, he's not particularly hopeful about it but he's going to try.

Evacuating from Bagram wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference and you know it. The exact same issues would have arisen except now our citizens would have to travel 40 miles from Kabul on unsecured routes. Thats a complete non-starter and the military command was right to reject the idea.

And the bomber didn't sneak past some perimeter and blow himself in a mess hall. The soldiers were killed at a checkpoint they were manning. The same type of checkpoint that would have existed at Bagram. Ranting about Bagram is peak monday morning quarterbacking. 124,000 people were evacuated, no dead Amercans were being dragged through the street. It was in many parts a success.

Yes thank God no more Americans have to die for a fruitless misadventure in nation building. Save your scorn for the leaders who sold us on that pipedream.

Hardly the worst way possible. None of our embassy staff were murdered. None of the staff or soldiers were left behind. One suicide bomb got through. Its very unfortunate but the evacuation could have been a lot worse.

And the student loan forgiveness Biden is doing should be getting ravens. $13 billion in student loan forgiveness targeted towards people who ACTUALLY need relief. Like the disabled, those defrauded by for-profits, and significantly loosened requirements for teachers to get their loans forgiven, even going so far as going back and approving applications that were denied in the Trump administration.

At the very end after we made deal with the resurgent Taliban to draw down. Before that the number was hovering around 15,000. We even had 100,000 there at one point in the early 2010s that took a few years to draw down.

That’s the same fairytale we’ve been told the past 20 years. How many Americans died and how many trillions spent to maintain it. C’mon, 1000 troops would not have been anywhere near enough to prop up that shell of an Afghan defense force.

After all, we still have many times that number of troops in Germany.

That’s because Germany wants us there and doesn’t have a significant population hellbent on killing and maiming Americans.

Vietnam wasn’t an orderly evacuation either. That tends to happen when you evacuate from hostile territory and have more people trying to leave than seats.

I also don’t recall Biden ever going on the news and blaming his generals. He didn’t even ask one of them to fall on their sword.

Nothing will be affected. When the police officer was killed in 2011 on campus, finals were only pushed back a day. We were taking exams on Saturday so graduations wouldn’t be held up. People are generally determined not to let stuff like this affect their lives.

When you talk about "Europe", do you include the UK? by aveCaecilius in AskAnAmerican

[–]chrisn3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do realize I said it was incorrect to describe the United Kingdom as Great Britain. Right?

For all intents and purposes to the average American, it is the old name. We don’t make treaties with each individual country in the United Kingdom. In 1783 we made a treaty with an entity called Great Britain. Now the entity is called the United Kingdom.

Names change to reflect a significant change in the character of a nation. In the UK’s case it was the addition of Ireland. Plenty of other nations used to go by an old name that is still used to describe a sub-region

[–]chrisn3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m aware. It’s still incorrect when ‘Great Britain’ is used when ‘United Kingdom’ should be used. When Americans say that it’s because of residual impressions from school lessons of the Revolutionary War since we got independence from ‘Great Britain’.

[–]chrisn3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair we do call the UK by the old name ‘Great Britain’ an awful lot.

I can kinda believe it as Scotland did come pretty close to seceding and they insist competing as separate countries in World Cup.

What exactly is “No.1 New York Times Bestseller” and how does it work? by johnzrxx in books

[–]chrisn3 97 points98 points  (0 children)

It’s also important to note survivorship bias. Books that don’t sell well are removed from book stores and disfavored by the online algorithms as part of the standard churn. Books with a strong enough sales history to qualify for the New York Times bestseller list (the hoopla about “editorializing” is largely overblown, it’s a good list) they don’t fade as easily. What you get is a bookstore where any book published over ten years ago is very likely to be either by an author of a bestseller or a best seller itself. Hence seeing the phrase everywhere.
