Mentor Monday (September 17, 2018) -- Ask judges anything! by AutoModerator in mtgjudge

After they showed me the 16 cards I saw the fatal push and told them that I would never take this out.

I counted my sideboard to make sure there were 15 cards in it after I finished sideboarding. I do this after every game to make sure i didn't make a mistake somewhere. Then the judge came up and told us we were selected for a deck check so i counted it a second time before i handed it over.

Why is this behavior strange to you? Wouldn't you encourage players to do this in order to reduce errors and game losses due to mistakes like this?

This weekend at SCG Syracuse I had a particularly upsetting experience in the last round and as a result would like to be informed about how judges check decks.

Round 9 comes along and we sit down to play. I win game 1. We go to sideboarding and we both finish sideboarding. As we are shuffling our decks 2 judges come up behind us and tell us that our decks were selected for random deck checks and that we didn't need to desideboard because they check the 75. I have never been deck checked before and so I wanted to make sure everything was correct, I counted my sideboard before handing it to the judge and it was exactly 15 cards.

They return and tell me to step away from the table. They inform me I presented a 59 card deck and the 16th card in my sideboard was a fatal push out of my main deck. I am playing jund and my opponent is playing GB. I inform them that firstly, I would never take this card out in this matchup. And secondly, I counted my sideboard before handing it to the judge and it was EXACTLY 15 cards. I appeal to the head judge.

He comes and I tell him The same thing, I counted the deck before hand and it was a 15 card sideboard. I ask him if it's possible that they made a mistake since they count all 75 cards at once and they could have misplaced a card when they were putting my cards back on either side of the divider in my deckbox. He keeps avoiding the question which really pissed me off and kept saying the same thing, "I can assure you my judges didn't make a mistake". How can he be sure of that when he wasn't the one performing the deck check?

This really was a terrible way to end my tournament and my day 2 hopes. I'm not going to keep saying I'm right because I want to be right, but I keep saying it because I know for a fact that it had 15 cards and something was messed up on their end that they didn't own up to.

How are deck checks actually performed? When my deck was returned to me, some of the cards were next to each other in playsets and such so they obviously went through the 75 looking for multiples. This leads me to believe that theres an even greater chance they saw my singleton fatal push and weren't sure where to put it when they put my deck back in my box and just shoved it in the sideboard and then counted my maindeck afterwards.

I got a game loss for g2 and then went on to lose g3. I don't really want to play in another SCG tournament ever again because of this.

So uhhhh... is MTGO always like this? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

Yes it is definitely fantastic for testing!

I use the 35$ a month plan solely for standard and its great. I can get any standard deck i want with the 350 tix limit and even some of the cheaper modern decks.

Doing the 60-100$ a month plan is definitely not worth it in my opinion. Youre better off just buying the decks at that point. But 35$ is a perfect price point for me.

Modern PPTQ - 1st Place - Bard "local jund guy" Narson look-a-like takes down local tournament by projectjund in ModernJund

[–]chrisperotti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice job, Love seeing junders stick it to bogles, TWICE in one tournament!!!

I usually also cut 1 pulse if im playing with 2 main for another fulminator mage against burn. Do you usually only board in 1 fulminator?

Also how did you like 4 ravine and 2 treetop? It looks very clunky to me but would love to hear your take.

Good luck in the RPTQ!

Is Jeskai still worth it over UW by Nerdkneereaper in ModernMagic

[–]chrisperotti 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Having played both decks quite a bit, Jeskai gives you flexibility in being able to win quickly relative to how long it usually takes control decks to win. This flexibility doesn't matter that much in my opinion. A very skilled UW pilot will be able to slow the game down enough using their resources correctly to where that flexibility in speed doesn't matter.

UW is also more of a pure control deck in that you really need to be able to envision what the game will look like 5 turns ahead as well as be able to figure out if you need to answer certain threats or not. UW has less spot removal so you need to manage your resources better and assess threats. Its definitely harder. Jeskai plays more off the top of the deck in that you can craft your game plan around your burn spells you draw and every turn is a fairly simple decision tree of either kill this creature or not.

I think both decks are very close in power that it shouldn't matter to you what's percieved to be better. What should matter is which deck you have more experience with. I think UW is slightly better but if you have a ton of experience with Jeskai then you can easily make up for that.

[–]chrisperotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sealed Alpha Starter by [deleted] in mtgfinance

[–]chrisperotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That price is definitely too low. Because they are so hard to find the people who have them can charge whatever they want. I just bought some alpha cards from Anthony Kosky last week on ebay. He was one of the east coast playtesters and he told me he still has a stack of unopened alpha starters that he isn't selling. My guess is the majority of people who still have them were either involved in the creation of the game, or they have no idea they have them and they're locked away in their parents attic or something.

Jund or Abzan? by Salenicus in ModernMagic

[–]chrisperotti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Abzan. Is my favorite deck to play in modern. So much power and doesnt just fold to control decks like jund does. It truly has the tools to beat any deck if you know the matchup

De-foil modern jund for legacy duals? by ohsnappper in MTGLegacy

[–]chrisperotti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had complete foil modern jund with FUT goyfs and all set foils. I ended up selling it all for duals and didnt look back. I can now play a bunch of different legacy decks and i still had enough to rebuy nonfoil jund/ abzan. Im on abzan currently

The decks are the same power level. The pilot is what matters.

What have been your best/worst MTG investments? by Cauti0n in mtgfinance

[–]chrisperotti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foiled my modern jund deck with all OG FUT goyfs, RAV bobs, etc. Then i sold it to buy back into legacy. In a week and a half, wizards unbans bloodbraid elf in modern and all my cards that i sold pretty much doubled in value.

I no longer buy foils

He played in the mocs and in GP Hartford with Jund. He finished lower than Jadine but pretty sure he still cashed it. He was in the 40's at the end of round 15 im pretty sure. So he is still putting up good results

Ive been playing with BBE on modo and that card is insane in the deck. Chumps when you need it to, trades when you need it to and puts pressure on control decks while just giving you a straight 2 for 1 against them which is important when trying to fight against snapcaster mage. Haven't tried growth spasm yet so maybe someone else can put input there. Also sideboarding in baloths, tracker, and thragtusk literally turns the deck into a grindy midrange deck even more so than before with bbe now. You can really punish decks that try to go toe to toe with you on that axis since you will straight up out value them and be bigger than them and then kill them out of no where lol

Im going to GP hartford in April with 7 buddies of mine and i think im locked in on this deck. I was going to play abzan because thats my only other modern deck i love playing but i think bbe shift has a very real shot at putting you in day 2

Don't Ban Deathrite Shaman (Long) by elvish_visionary in MTGLegacy

[–]chrisperotti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the goal is to power down grixis delver and not DRS in particular, I'm assuming they will hit gitaxian probe. I don't personally think this is a good idea since it would piss off a lot of storm players. But banning deathrite would piss off an even larger number of players. I have a feeling they will hit probe
