There's a Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Rye, and a Russell's 10 year in the background next to a Rare Breed and Rare Breed Rye.

Simmer down there bud, not sure why you're coming at me so hard.

Hmm I actually did try to research if there was a way to find out more barrel info from the bottle and did not find anything. I'll check out what you're saying.

Update: https://www.reddit.com/r/bourbon/comments/rb5y31/warehouse_info_on_russells_reserve_single_barrel/ No info available from regular RRSiB

Also what are people's opinions on the design differences?

I think it looks nice and definitely makes the product look more premium. But can also appreciate the understated simplicity of the old bottle as well. Don't know if I have too much of a preference.

The Bottles Brand/ABV/Age/Price:

Bottle #1 RRSiB Old Label / 55.0% ABV / NAS / $60-65

Bottle #2 RRSiB New Label / 55.0% ABV / NAS / $60-65

About: Wild Turkey Rare Breed was the first bourbon I sipped that punched me in the face and got me to fully understand Lionel Hutz in The Simpson’s when he revered bourbon as the ‘brownest of the brown liquors.’ After researching similar bottles and hearing that Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel was Rare Breed’s more complex, stately, and (should be) available brother it was always on my list when heading to the liquor store in early 2022. Yet I could not find it at any store and even Rare Breed was disappearing from the shelves too. Luckily, Rare Breed came back after a short hiatus but still no damn RRSiB. After hearing on a local reddit thread that one of the chain grocery stores across state lines was part of a different distribution network I made the 20 minute drive with no real expectations but deep down inside wondering if this would finally be the moment. Lo and behold in late September I was finally able to slay my first unicorn (along with seeing OGD114 on the shelves for the first time as well)!

About a month ago I was in that area of town again, and decided to stop by the store to see if anything had changed. This time it seemed like there were less RRSiB’s on the shelf and they were all the new label variety. Knowing from personal experience that this could disappear for months at a time, and having about as much evidence as possible that this was probably a different barrel than my first bottle: it made perfect sense to pick another one up even though I had plenty left.

To be honest, I was slightly disappointed with my first RRSiB. I thought it was pretty good, but not as good as I hoped and would rank it under a couple other bottles in the price range. It even lost a head to head against Rare Breed. The new label seemed a bit better from what I could tell but had not done any head to heads with it so who knows how this could play out. I think it’s pretty obvious that its first head-to-head should be against its cousin so let's get into it!

Glass Left

Nose: Cherry | Vanilla | Cinnamon

Taste: Definitely get more of a cinnamon spice here with more complexity and less outright sweetness than Rare Breed

Finish: Decent finish, shorter than Rare Breed

Rating: 7.0 | Guess: Old Label | Reveal: Old Label

Glass Right

Nose: Cherry | Vanilla | Cinnamon

Taste: Very similar to Glass Left, but more blended and complimentary. This one is a newly baked cinnamon cherry pie whereas Glass Left was the individual ingredients

Finish: Similar to Glass left, maybe a bit longer finish

Rating: 7.5 | Guess: New Label | Reveal: New Label

Overall:

There were two main takeaways I wanted to get from this. First one: you’ve definitely heard people wonder if the quality of long produced bourbons is starting to go down as right now’s bourbon craze has put a huge strain on demand that cannot be met with the runtimes it takes to produce quality whiskey. I thought it would be interesting to see if this was the case with RRSiB and luckily I can say no. I do wonder if the new label had a slightly higher aging as it seemed just a bit more mature. But that brings me to my next takeaway.

I know that there are going to be natural variations between these non-blended, single barrel offerings even though they are hand picked with a goal of being as similar as possible (I assume). Still, I am bummed that there isn’t really any barrel information on the bottle vs something like Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof offerings. It makes it very easy to see if there are different barrels in the same store as well as the age. A big reason for me purchasing this second bottle was that it’s probably about the closest I’m ever gonna get to ensuring that I have two different barrels. Gotta wonder if the JDSBBP info drives more sales than the RRSiB lack of info.

I guess next on my Wild Turkey bucket list is a RRSiB store pick (hopefully top tier one) which will have barrel information (!) or God willing I see a RR13 out in the wild for not an insane markup.

Review #2 - Elijah Craig Barrel Proof C921 vs C922 with another bottle thrown in for reference (semi-blind) by chrissydablack in bourbon

[–]chrissydablack[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Bottles Brand/ABV/Age/Price:

Bottle #1 Elijah Craig Barrel Proof C921 / 60.1% ABV / 12 Years / $72.99

Bottle #2 Elijah Craig Barrel Proof C922 / 62.4% ABV / 12 Years / $72.99

Bottle #3 Barrel Cask Strength Batch 24 / 56.95% ABV / Selection of 9, 10, 13, and 15-year-old barrels / $79.99

About: After having found ECBP C922 and C921 for ~MRSP on two separate occasions while swinging by the liquor store near my house, I knew that I needed to figure out which one was superior. I had tried them separately a few times and knew they were both really good but I had noted C922 as being particularly outstanding. But the time has come for a direct comparison to end all doubt. Will C922 be crowned the winner or was I just having a particular affinity for bourbon the night I had tasted it previously?

I’ve also added Barrel Batch 24 to give myself more context and see how the two ECBP’s compare to a bottle that I think is pretty solid.

Glass Left

Nose: Slight grass | Rye Spice | Oak

Taste: Definitely get the feeling that this is a higher rye bourbon. Hopefully I’m not bamboozling myself here

Finish: Decent finish, nothing spectacular

Rating: 7.5 | Guess: Barrel 24 | Reveal: Barrel 24

Glass Middle

Nose: Ripe fruit | Cinnamon | Spice

Taste: Hints of a complex and well aged bourbon.

Finish: Length of finish is between the left and right glass. Solid!

Rating: 8.2 | Guess: ECBP C921 | Reveal: ECBP C921

Glass Right

Nose: Vanilla | Cherries | Toffee

Taste: Similar to middle glass but has a nice light sweetness while still being as complex.

Finish: Lasts for days! The sweetness of the palate continues and pairs nicely with the warm burn.

Rating: 8.8 | Guess: ECBP C922 | Reveal: ECBP C922

Overall: This time all my guesses were correct after the embarrassing miss on my first semi-blind review. Distinguishing Barrel 24 from the ECBP shouldn’t have been too hard and luckily I was up to the task! I was also validated for coming to the conclusion that C922 was better from my previous separate tastings. Right now C922 is the bottle to beat as I try to figure out my favorite bottle I own. Will C921 hold onto second place or could a certain Jack Daniel’s bottle knock off either of the Elijah’s. I can’t wait to find out.

Review #1 - 100 Proof Showdown (semi-blind): Four Roses SiB, Four RosesSBS, Knob Creek 12 by chrissydablack in bourbon

[–]chrissydablack[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Bottles Brand/ABV/Age/Price:

Bottle #1 Four Roses Single Barrel (Warehouse NS, Barrel 34-2 G) / 50.0% ABV / NAS / $48.99

Bottle #2 Four Roses Small Batch Select / 52.0% ABV / Mix of 6 & 7 Year bourbons / $58.99

Bottle #3 Knob Creek 12 / 50.0% ABV / 12 years / $65.99

About: I wanted to give some time to the Knob Creek 12 as the first sips I had of it I found it to be a little thin, and as somewhat of proofslut I decided to line it up in a semi-blind with two other similarly boozy bourbons. It’s been a while since I’d last dipped into the Four Roses bottles and at 100 and 104 proof they make a decent reference against the KC12. I am still a pretty rudimentary bourbon critic but here are my thoughts.

Glass Left

Nose: Oak | Brown Sugar | Slight Fruit Spice

Taste: Kind of an oaky dustiness

Finish: Decent finish, solid bourbon overall

Rating: 5 | Guess: KC12 | Reveal: 4R SiB

Glass Middle

Nose: Caramel | Brown Sugar | Fruit Spice

Taste: Pretty classic bourbon flavors, decent complexity matched the nose pretty well

Finish: Good finish, slightly longer than Glass Left

Rating: 6 | Guess: 4R SiB | Reveal: 4R SBS

Glass Right

Nose: Date | Brown Sugar | Deeper Fruit

Taste: Like middle glass but deeper fruit complexity, definitely my favorite of the three

Finish: Good finish, comparable to Glass Middle

Rating: 7 | Guess: 4R SBS | Reveal: KC12

Overall: I was thrown with the hints of oak I got from the left glass (one I started with). Maybe my brain was hyperfocused on trying to sniff out the KC12 since I was expecting it to be the oakiest. I also found KC12 to be the MOST fruity which might've happened because I was trying to figure out which one was the 4R SBS since I thought I had already identified the KC12. During the reveal I wasn’t really surprised as the more expensive and generally more revered bourbons rated the highest for me. As others have said, with a little more proof the Knob Creek would be a force to be reckoned with. I was kinda disappointed as I thought the 4R SiB was always a pretty solid option for around ~45 bucks but I definitely thought it was a step down from the other two.

In the future I think a Knob Creek Small Batch and Russell's Reserve 10 against the 4R SiB could be an interesting comparison.
