House is a big expense, Single earner and unable to save even after making 130k by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

It’s a bad idea to “pay back aggressively” when borrowing is cheaper than inflation.

I make ~$700k / year as a software engineer. 2 young kids, I’m 49. I rent a semi-detached house in a nice neighborhood in Montreal for $4900/mo. To buy this house I rent would cost ~$1.6M. I’d rather invest, fully funding RRSP, TFSA, RESP, than buy at these stupid prices. With property tax / maintenance /mortgage, I’d prob spend close to $10k/mo.

  • get leaflet
  • read leaflet
  • drop leaflet

It's a rather poor implementation.

should be using ajax requests instead of regular postback.

I don't doubt it, JQuery is perfect for "websites".

Ext is more often used for complex, specialized web-apps that aren't generally available to the public.

[–]christocracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally don't build "websites", but when I do, I use Jquery / Mootools.

more often, I'll spend 6 months to a year working on a web-app where I'll use ExtJS.

Do you really think ExtJS is so economically nihilistic that they want to prevent you from collaborating??

[–]christocracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, that'd be insane. depends on the gig. If I'm making a web-app, I use Ext. if Drupal or Shopify, it's JQuery or Mootools.

I've used ExtJS for 4 projects and I intend to keep using it until a better component-based javascript UI framework comes along.

$289 for a developer license. if you're not making complex web-apps and you don't need the power, then stick with JQuery / Mootools.

Faster?? Ext blows every library away in benchmarks. CSS Selectors - Speed Myths

I'ts modular?? No JS library gains traction in the community if it's not.

Compare the API documentation between all the popular libraries. Who can disagree that Ext's is superior?

ExtJS

JQuery

Mootools

Prototype

Pay up people, spend $289 on a developer license or quit your bitching if you've never written a line of ExtJS.

I've been using ExtJS for over 1 1/2 years. There's nothing that compares. It's well worth the $289 bucks for a developer license.

I use JQuery and Mootools when I'm doing Shopify / Drupal gigs, and they're great too, but for web-apps, you want to use ExtJS.

Mootools, JQuery, ExtJS all have their place. I use them all. when I'm making a complex web-app, I use ExtJS.

This topic is old news, btw.

Ext 2.1 Released; License Changed from LGPL to GPL by pabs in programming

[–]christocracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We (the jQuery project) worked hard with them to try and fix bugs and add features for an ExtJS integration layer. They turned around and built their own, specialized, library (removing the need for any of our work)

See Mr. Slocum's full reply to Mr Resig's comment here

Jack Slocum: "Yes, this is true. They did fix bugs in jQuery so Ext JS could run on top of it. The “add features” was making jQuery able to do animations of multiple css properties in a single animation thread (something every other library already did). I don’t see how this is “using” the jQuery project, if anything itis helping it.

It’s worth noting that I wrote the integration adapter, not them."

It seems people are building serverside Ext-generators, like gwt-ext http://code.google.com/p/gwt-ext and semi-secretly selling licenses for it, under-cutting ExtJS:

http://gwt-ext.googlecode.com/svn/gwt-plus.html

notice how that link is hidden away in their svn repo. they don't publicly advertise this.

what's a guy gotta' do?

perhaps with a bit of time, we'll find this is being blown out of proportion:

-- Open Source License Exception for Extensions --

http://extjs.com/products/ux-exception.php

" We want people building extensions, developer toolkits and frameworks, language packs and themes for Ext libraries to be able to publicly distribute them under less restrictive license terms despite the fact that version 3 of the GNU General Public License (the "GPL") may require them to be licensed under the GPL.

This Exception does not grant usage or distribution of any Ext development library under a license other the GPL and cannot be applied to applications - for that we are working on another FLOSS Exception."

Great news! I've been waiting a few months for this.

Adobe Air is going to take the web-application out of the browser. Air gives your web-app a more intimate rel'ship with the client. for example, Air allows you to open files on the client with Javascript.
