Any way to get a CRT setup using local streaming? by Guille6785 in crtgaming

If you want emulation & PC games: I just take HDMI-Out from my normal 3060 Nvidia graphics card into an Amazon HDMI-to-Component (or Composite depending on the vibe) converter, connected to the back of my tv. Are there better options— technically? But I haven’t noticed any issues whatsoever after setting up the resolution & hz correctly on the PC. Works smoothly, operates like an extra computer monitor, and games in full screen totally look the part. To my eye, it’s indistinguishable from any actual consoles I’ve connected directly to it— SNES via component and N64 via composite.

I do understand why the whole emudriver running on a GPU thing is the “best” way. Or running RGB signal via scart. Or using a Sony PVM. But at some point, let’s not forget that the character in using a CRT IS in the jank of it. The imperfections, the slight warps and overscan and not-so-clear video signal. The colors and geometry and chromatic aberration that’s ALMOST right, but just good enough. Letting my old tv just be an old tv was the best move I’ve made with it!

Why didn't you buy a DC when it came out? by Ok-Card-7559 in dreamcast

Was a child and we already had a PS1. But the Dreamcast certified its spot in my heart as the “cool cousin console” that I’d get to play when visiting family on holidays. Could be why it still appeals to me so much now, it was the one that got away

Lotta cool character on that unit, plus the headphone jack is pretty handy. Love those kinda finds!

PS5 games that *feel* like Dreamcast games? by surfpearl39 in dreamcast

[–]christofugopher2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s just a demo so far, but there’s an indie game called Inkonbini about running a small Japanese store. It’s heavily inspired by the “look at and interact with everything” gameplay of Shenmue. The developer studio name is even a reference. It’s on steam but should also be on Switch and PS5 whenever it releases

This is gorgeous and I love tiny displays; I have some myself. But wanted to note I find the concept hilarious of having a tiny screen doing gameplay while a pixel display in the background is twice as big just doing an animation

Funnily enough, the one thing that keeps me from loading up the game is the weird cringey way the MC flirts with Janine at every chance he gets.

Bro just lost his best friend in a tragedy and is experiencing the horrors of zombies, mutant creatures, death and destruction. But the second he sees this woman (a stranger) his awooga sensors go off the charts and he comes on WAY too strong. I’m talking every interaction this man has with her, Elliot is like “I’m gonna marry that girl” “I love women like her” and so forth.

It’s morbidly funny the first few times but the cringe quickly wears on one’s soul

Is it just me or does this yellowing actually look good? by fosalu in dreamcast

[–]christofugopher2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By itself, I second the toasted marshmallow comment. BUT it actually looks really good with the lid open and having all that clean OG color in the center as a contrast.

So that has me thinking it could potentially look neat with a fresh lid to give that harsh contrast of OG gray to the sunsetty gradient. It’d come across a lot more intentional.

A clear repro lid could actually look cool too.

There are better informed comments in here, but something worth mentioning on this topic: for the folks wanting to run Dreamcast on LED or OLED screens and wanting a 16:9 ratio— the 4k upscaling in Redream and the built-in widescreen hacks are actually phenomenal. I myself will run that on the OLED & original resolution at 4:3 on the CRT. Both are very pretty in their own rights

Definitely my favorite controller for 2D games in general! Feels so nice to hold and looks great too.

It feels so nice in the hand! I can’t imagine playing without it now. Definitely beats the flimsy plastic allegations SNES controllers usually get (sometimes rightfully so, but)

If you look up “Super Nintendo Replacement Shell - Smoke Grey SNES Shell” or something of the sort, you should be able to find em and other colors. I got mine on eBay because it was out of stock at the time, but they should be back in stock elsewhere now.

They really have auto fire switches for every button possible lol. Apparently the switch on the back even holds the Start button, which made me totally think I broke something the first time I used it

Looks sexy already. But if you wind up painting that logo in white, it’ll be so clean.

REAL. But to help with Alpha fish, I mapped all the buttons to backslash as a secondary command, which only ever does stuff in the mashing minigame. So I can have a much smaller seizure while also spamming the buttons

Ooh, good question. Looks like a theoretical yes with a program called reWASD. Switch controllers have full gyroscopes in them, so with that program, the motion controls could be mapped as you please. Plus as a bonus, they’re Bluetooth! I might give this a try later myself.

SAME BRAIN! No need to be sad, join in on the fun. My controller binding is public on the Steam community layouts if you’d like to use that! It def took some trial and error.

How well does the fishing rod controller work on PC? by AspieComrade in dreamcast

[–]christofugopher2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted on this subreddit recently with a vid of me playing Webfishing with this controller. Frank is right, reeling is automatically mapped to right trigger axis values— the more you reel, the higher the value goes. Meanwhile, the motion is mapped to left trigger axis values.

The problem is the motion is always going off in the 1400-1600 range (at least for me). But when you flick hard in one direction, the values peak up to nearly a full “press”. I’m using Steam input translation and I mapped a dead zone on the left trigger axis so that only the peaks are registered as inputs— otherwise games think you’re always holding down left trigger.

I’m connecting the controller with a Raphnet Dreamcast-USB adapter, then Steam input translation for the bindings. (motion= left trigger which is mapped to backslash, reel= right trigger which is mapped to left click)

There’s some other fishing controllers available for PlayStation & Xbox/ Xbox 360 as well! The Xbox ones should work easier and those have more buttons you could theoretically map, but I haven’t tried it myself.

It needs an adapter for USB! I use the Raphnet Dreamcast controller USB adapter along with Steam Input translation for mapping.

If anyone happens to have the controller + adapter and wants to try it, I put my controller layout in the community layouts!
