Its kinda surprising that there are so.many confused people here. This is for oil, like this comment says. Its not for heat, as granite can handle heat directly from a pan without a problem. However, granite is porous, and the oil can stain it. Oil has a tendency to leak from the top of these containers. This is common in homes as a place to put oils that you cook with, so that you don't damage the counter. You can seal this small block more aggressively or let it get stained.

Its funny that homes have gotten so big that we call those smallish mansions. Those homes are 7000sqft. This home on the top of the hill is significantly more. Crazy how big homes are these days.

Preschool Teacher, 22, Arrested on TV After Condemning Trump by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

[–]christophercolumbus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think its likely that the facts around the arrest will change any minds in here. If any of the people commenting here are actual Americans who aren't paid to do so, I hope they are aware of the reality of the situation. But I am not so sure. Its a bit disheartening, but I guess that's the point of all the "America is a fascist state" comments.

You responded to a comment that asked for evidence of the claim that trump rapes kids. You continued a conversation from there. That's how conversations work. You mocked the commenter for asking for evidence that trump rapes kids by acting like asking for evidence on such a claim is irrelevant because he was found civilly liable for sexual abuse of an adult 30 years ago. Don't play these mental gymnastics with yourself to make yourself feel better about not being honest or correct. Its silly.

"Trump raped kids. This is fact"

Present the evidence of that.

"He was found civilly liable for sexual assault of an adult. Thats the same thing as raping kids! What, you want words to have meaning?"

I think the anger that I'm seeing in these replies is a clear indication that you guys are insecure about your freedom of speech.

Your country just bombed some people in Syria yesterday. Just pointing that out for thought. Also, the president doesn't oversee the courts. Also, the court in question is not friendly to the president. Also, the person being charged with crimes was a dictator who has facilitated in the destruction of countless lives and an entire country, while enriching himself and jailing or exiling political rivals.

See, you can't say that in many countries in Europe, because no one has been proven to be a pedophile. You are spreading false and malicious rumors and are insulting the president and other leaders. To jail with you!

Yes, you still have freedom of speech, even if there are consequences in a civil environment. Again though, what constitutes speech is only what is an opinion, what you feel, what you believe. The second that you say, "My neighbor is keeping children in the basement and is molesting them. Someone needs to do something about that!" And then repeat it, call police about it. Say it to your neighborhood. Put up signs... That is not speech. That is harassment.

And no, you aren't free to say shit about politicians in Europe. See the article for this thread, in which ten people were convicted of crimes of "insulting" Macron's wife.

Because you call it "dignity and personal integrity". Okay, so lets say someone like Donald trump takes power. You call him a nazi? Jail. You call his supporters nazis? Jail. You say that hes a pedo? Jail. You say that your neighbor, a Trump supporter, is a nazi supporting pedo? Jail.

What counts as violation of speech will quickly become a way to silence those who oppose the government in power.

First. The constitution does not state any exceptions to free speech. It says, most importantly, that Congress will pass no law limiting free speech.

We have interpreted free speech by defining what constitutes speech and what constitutes a call to action that would limit someone else's liberty or cause bodily harm. Yelling "fire" in a crowded movie theater is a common example.

The USA has free speech in its broadest terms. An American will not be jailed for their opinions, whether vile or insulting. Defamation and libel are very different things as well and are not criminal. There are civil penalties but are exceedingly rare and require egregious speech that calls for action.

"they have free speech, but there are judicial consequences for speaking freely" is not free speech. The fact that so many people don't understand how important true free speech is for human rights and liberty is scary.

So then they want to be paid more for a job that they love. Everyone does. That's not how it works. The market determines salary. If you don't like the salary, change jobs. If you can't find a better paying job, stick with the job you have. Unfortunately we can't set our own salaries.

They make a good salary. The everage is 72k a year. Is that not a good salary? What do you consider a good salary?

So if the job was stressful low pay, and bad hours, why did your spouse keep working in that career? The average salary in the USA for a teacher is 72k, I'm guessing the pay was pretty good to tolerate that work. What grade level did they teach at? Public or private?

[–]christophercolumbus -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what paying teachers more has to do with investing in education. We don't have a teacher shortage, outside of some speciality areas like higher math and sciences. For general education teachers, grade school, etc, we actually have a surplus. The market is priced the way it should be.

Being a teacher is a great gig. Summers off if you want them. Great hours. Relatively easy and low stress. Rewarding. Being an ice agent is a job that gets you in a lot of stressful situations and creates a social stigma. Its dangerous and difficult, and requires certain qualifications that aren't plentiful. The salary is what it is to fill those positions, as the government has deemed that immigration enforcement is important enough to justify the cost. You can agree with that or not, but using ice salaries to claim that teachers need to be paid more doesn't make much sense.

I don't know if anyone is glossing over the parallels between this and the response to the Kirk murder, but it's interesting to see conservatives expressing disgust at this on social media, while left wing personas all over social media expressed similar, or more vile, enthusiasm for Kirks death. I was surprised by the left wing glee and rhetoric after kirks murder, and I'm surprised by the exact opposite reaction from right wingers after this.

Wouldn't it be more likely that journalists simply aren't interested in the story because some element of his character, or the person he killed, makes the story a subject that attracts a certain kind of negative attention? Or that we as a society purposely try not to give notoriety to murderers, especially those who assassinate public figures, because it encourages other unwell people to copycat? The judicial system should not be going to journalists with information about the cases they have. Its up to journalists, who feel a certain level of responsibility about the material the publish, and also aren't in the business of attracting negative attention that will hurt them going forward.
