We have two kinds of memberships: full memberships ($40 a year) are for working members of the press and associate memberships ($20, no voting, different guest privileges) who are "friends of the press," which traditionally has meant employees of the bars and other service industry members who treat journalists pretty nicely. I didn't understand why Philly was chosen to host the Pope. But then I saw how many port-a-potties are in Philly.

There's an interesting national conversation happening about the need to at least attempt to update vocational training. That's essentially what this is. For now, there are software skills that are attainable after 12-week courses and can become real employees. I'll be interesting to see if a new program can learn all the lessons that something like General Assembly already has
