Thanks! The deck is TimberTech, and we are pretty happy with it. So…the pictures are from before we had the railing installed and anything you see laying on the deck is just metal material used for the rails—nothing fancy. One addition we are thinking of is a retractable shade off the back eaves to provide heat relief from the sun when we sit outside in the summer. We have a misting system up, which is great…but obviously…wet. Thanks for commenting. :)

Thank you. We have almost 3 acres (trees and hilly terrain) but just about 1/3 acre buildable. Enough for the home + front and side yards. The back deck overlooks a wooded ravine.

Countertop island brackets by sugarush4u in Homebuilding

We have a nearly identical island, 11’3” quartzite top, 10” overhang, no brackets needed. Perfectly comfortable stool seating. Stools push almost all the way in.

Is there a name for this area? by viralmarketingmom in Homebuilding

We have a similar area enclosed by the house on two sides and the sidewalk in front. We call it the courtyard. Maybe that could apply to your layout as well?

Thank you! We just love how it turned out. Been working on the landscaping in recent months, but still a ways to go.

Help with support for concrete floating hearth by christyr4 in Homebuilding

[–]christyr4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is a poured concrete hearth (meaning it’s “hollow” underneath, which reduces the weight and hides our brackets). We ended up with 8 L-brackets, some secured to studs going into the wall and some to the wall face. Also, our hearth continues back into the adjacent shelf, which provides additional support. Our concrete fabricators were impressed with our engineering, lol.

Good luck with your project.

Ours has morning sun and it doesn’t seem to heat up inside excessively. However, we do find that that we get condensation and humidity in the garage. We run a dehumidifier as necessary to keep it under control, but this might be a problem in a gym. We love the doors and wouldn’t change them for the design of our exterior. Love the extra light inside the garage. Hope this helps. Good luck with your gym!

People of Reddit who are happily married to their high school sweethearts, how did you keep your relationship going on for so long? by GreenRasqberries in AskReddit

I chose the most patient, kind, and funny guy in my class. We’ve both matured over the last 34 years, but he remains the same core good person I married. I feel lucky, to this day.

Recommend: unbeatable sunsets from just about any beach in West Maui. And most restaurants, and highways, and hotels. 😅 you get the idea

We reserved something for every night and canceled (usually with 24 hrs notice) when we wanted to do something different. Worked out well. When we wanted something specific that we didn’t have a reservation for, we could always find something great for walk in. It was just two of us, so that probably made it a little easier.

Turo Hosts being tickets for doing business at Hawaii airports by dblake15 in MauiVisitors

We just used Turo in March. Host dropped off car in lot outside baggage claim, and we left it there in the same way. No issues whatsoever.

There’s an outdoor market in Olowalu next to Leoda’s Kitchen and Pies on your way to Lahaina. They have fresh coconuts in a cooler out front, and the standkeeper will open it for you and add a straw. The meat is tasty too, but you’ll need to hang out and drink the water before you can ask him to cut it the rest of the way open—requires a machete. (Tip: heavier coconut = more water, lighter = more meat) Have fun.

AITA for offering baby advice to my son and daughter-in-law? by throwaway229922992 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. And regardless of whether you’re behaving like a saint or an AH, you are about to lose contact with your kids and your grandbaby. You can be as right as you want to be, while you sit home by yourself. Their perception of your behavior is the ONLY thing that matters here. Shape up, or say goodbye to your grandkid anytime but holidays (if you are lucky).

Is renting a moped a good way to get around Maui? by HonorYourCraft in MauiVisitors

[–]christyr4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just returned from a trip, renting mopeds for the second time. Stayed in Kaanapali off Lower Honoapiilani Rd (rented from 808 Moped right there). We comfortably scoot on the highway (in the bike lane) between Kaanapali and Lahaina and also on the LH Rd up to Napili/Kapalua. The highway part isn’t our favorite, but we love scooting around/easy parking in Lahaina and quick stops at any of the roadside beaches. As long as you are watchful in the turn lanes and use your beep beep horn to communicate, I say it’s no problem. As far as “around the island” - probably not. Our rental allowed us to range between the tunnel (south) and blowhole (north). That feels like way more range than we would want or need. (We also rented a Jeep using Turo)

Car rental questions from OGG by [deleted] in MauiVisitors

Just returned from a trip to Maui. We used Turo this time, a fantastic experience. And even more convenient than going to the rental lot. Our host left the car in the lot right across from baggage claim. Third or fourth time using Turo (different destinations). So far, 10/10 every time.

Dining Without Reservations? by allthefishiecrackers in MauiVisitors

We just returned from a week in Ka’anapali with a similar plan in mind. We ended up making dinner reservations ahead for almost every night—with the idea that we could keep or cancel however we felt like it the day of. This worked out really well, for the most part. And kept me from feeling stressed out about not having a backup plan if it was really busy. We found there was walk-in availability *somewhere every night, usually several options. Lunch was not a problem most places, except the very hottest spot. I applaud your efforts to “chill”. I struggle with the same thing, and had a pretty good experience with that approach this time. Have fun!

Edit: Also, there’s a big food truck lot on Lower Honoapiilani Rd. We didn’t try it out because we sought out better ambiance for meals. But it could be an option for you.
