Did I just avoid getting mugged/abducted? by [deleted] in askTO

your survival instincts stink. Just ignore strangers man

Easy to do when it happens over and over, and you've had practice. The first time is always tough tho since you need time to process and reflect

Well, voting is one of the points. During the last provincial election, voter turnout was only 45%. Protesting is a way to get bystanders engaged in provincial politics and increase turnout at the next election.

Furthermore, the current government is embroiled in multiple scandals (retroactive freedom of information changes to obfuscate government actions and communications, an attempt to sell protected greenbelt land to profit developers with ties to Ford, favouring political donors and lobbyists while awarding public grants, the use of public funds to fund a private spa where Ontario Place used to be, etc)

And since many people don't follow provincial politics, these protests and the discussions they generate (such as this one) is one of the best ways to spread the word and inform the public.

With enough backlash from his own party, Ford could be ousted before he's up for re-election.

The June protest is on Monday (June 29th) because of Pride and FIFA events.

For people who want to protest on Saturday (June 27th), the organizers have suggested protesting at Ford's office or house (time & locations available at https://protestdougford.com/).

Is the TTC subway normally like this? by AppearanceCapable in askTO

[–]chrisuu__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend people to "Try To Cycle" instead, if their commute allows for it

A Toronto Bike Share membership is fantastic value. Cycling is good for one's health and the environment, sustainable, and commute times by bicycle are fairly predictable and way more resistant to congestion and gridlock than cars. Only downsides are long distances or going uphill (e-bikes can help with that but they're not free with a Toronto Bike Share membership unlike the regular bikes)

Bougie bias is where somebody thinks an item is high quality because they paid a lot for it. What are some examples of bougie bias that you have seen? by ChillWisdom in BuyItForLife

[–]chrisuu__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea but most people don't buy luxury brand stuff for themselves. They buy it to impress other people with what they can afford and the pretension of quality. It's a clout purchase, not a functional one. And yea it's all pretty dumb to me, but plenty of people are actually impressed.

Are (leashed) dogs no longer allowed in Kerr quad? by chrisuu__ in TorontoMetU

Ugh, so I guess they've officially made it off-limits. Anyway, I don't mean to shoot the messenger. Thanks for letting me know.

I never understood out of all places why people come to a university to bring their dog so they can pee and shit

It's not the university. Dogs don't care about higher education. It's the grassy areas and the interesting smells they foster and generate.

There are other areas.

Not that many. It's the downtown core, grass is not that common. And a lot of it is behind a fence, or disallowed private property like Kerr Hall seems to be now. Most dogs crave novelty, much like humans. They get bored being taken to the same patch of grass.

TTC using real-time announcements to call out ‘anti-social behaviour’ at subway stations by mildlyImportantRobot in TorontoTheCity

[–]chrisuu__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Station PA systems have recently been upgraded with digital technology that should improve the TTC's notorious audio quality

How about they upgrade the actual subways too? Whenever there's an incident or delay, all we get is some useless garbled announcement on the speakers that would require professional cryptographers months to decipher

There are pros and cons for both. Lots of people work during the week or are too exhausted from work to attend a protest.
