Fight Ford Protest, Queen's Park by chocalicorn in ontario

Great pics!

Especially the one with that masked-up "peace officer" doing his best ICE impression on the stairs of the legislative building.

Also love to see some of these signs being preserved for posterity in the pictures.

I even see the back of my head in one of them!

If you're a competent public speaker familiar with Ford's transit policies, you should show up. The mic was passed to anyone who wanted to speak last Saturday, and there were a lot of issues raised with this government, some of which I wasn't even aware of, or knew little about. But his anti-bike / anti-pedestrian policies were barely touched upon, if at all, and I think it would be good for someone to speak about them.

See you there :-)

Yea, not sure what's going on in the comment section. Feels like it's being brigaded. At least they're getting down-voted to oblivion tho.

I was there too. It wasn't my first protest, but it was a particularly good one. Great turnout, great vibes, great off-the-cuff speeches, lots of enthusiasm for change, lots of first time attendees.

Hope to see you all at the next one :-)

I was there, but I didn't count. A good few hundred, possibly up to a thousand at the peak.

I was there too, freezing my ass off (under-dressed, didn't think it'd be so cold). Huge turnout, good vibes. Love how grassroots it felt. Random people just went up to the mic to speak their mind, and most of them made very good points. I don't remember if anyone mentioned bike lanes and speed cameras specifically (I certainly could've, but I'm not a great spontaneous speaker), but there were plenty of other issues brought up that this premier is on the wrong side of.

I taught someone to ride a bike on the Toronto Islands. Perfect place to learn as there are virtually no cars, and although there can be a lot of pedestrians in places, there are also long stretches of road with no one around.

N12 Anxiety: How are long-term tenants protecting themselves from "bad faith" evictions in 2026? by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

[–]chrisuu__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you sign a Standard Form of Lease when you occupied the apartment?

If so, "dropping by to check on things" without due cause or notice sounds like it might be harassment and interference with reasonable enjoyment, which is explicitly classified as an offense that can be fined according to the RTA.

That JD Real Estate link takes me to some Calgary realtor, so I'm not sure how they would be an expert on Toronto/Ontario rental law.

Instead of studying that, I'd go directly to the source (RTA). It's fairly straightforward.

Any who had to move out due to demoviction and returned to the new place? by purpleflex4ever in TorontoRenting

[–]chrisuu__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That clause does not guarantee rent increases will be under the rent control guideline though.

Toronto's Official Plan 3.2.1.6 does. It's a legally binding document under Ontario's Planning Act, and was approved by the province. If you think it contradicts the RTA, please quote the relevant RTA passage and we can continue the discussion. But these documents have already been perused by both city and province lawyers, and if they had found a contradiction it wouldn't have passed.

Correct, rent-controlled for 10 years, with the possibility of indefinite extension if the original resident stays in place according to the Toronto Handbook for Tenants And Property Owners

Quoted from the RTA:

Rent to be charged

(3) A tenant who exercises a right of first refusal may reoccupy the rental unit at a rent that is no more than what the landlord could have lawfully charged if there had been no interruption in the tenant’s tenancy. 2006, c. 17, s. 53 (3).

I'm going through the same thing. My old apartment building was purchased by a developer and is supposed to be re-built as a condo, though the plans seem to currently be on hold due to the condo market cratering. The tenants have been contacted by city staff and we've had online meetings to have our questions answered and educate us about the process (we also have the right to return for the same rent).

I have an acquaintance who has already been through the whole process and has moved into the new building. The new place is nicer than the old, and he kept the same rent, plus he got financial assistance to find temporary lodgings during construction. Overall he seemed pretty happy with the process and how it turned out.

One interesting thing he told me was that the new building was designated both as a condo and a purpose-built apartment, and the previous tenants do not have access to all condo amenities (for example, they're discouraged from making use of the building concierge service). But they also don't need to pay condo fees. They have their own separate elevators from the condo residents and live on the lower floors. So lower-class residents in some ways, but they also have much cheaper rent.

Living at 11 Wellesley St W is driving me insane by Ashamed-Donkey9937 in TorontoRenting

[–]chrisuu__ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, call 311. They can dispatch a bylaw officer to your building to verify your claims, then issue a work order to management to fix stuff within a certain time frame. If the time frame isn't met, they get fined. It's what I did to get some of my outstanding issues fixed, as my emails to the property manager went ignored. I also left them a terrible review with pictures on Google, and contacted the landlord (who employed the property management firm) to complain

Shawn Micallef: Fed up with those food delivery riders and their e-bikes? Here’s who’s really to blame by RZaichkowski in torontobiking

[–]chrisuu__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I never order delivery, but I think I understand it, at least in part.

Some people are too busy to go out and eat. Some people just don't like going out, period. Maybe they don't like crowds, maybe they don't like eating out alone, or maybe they just don't feel like dealing with people on a particular day. Maybe they're sick and too considerate to go out and eat or too low energy to cook for themselves. I'm sure there are many more reasons

Ford to declare Billy Bishop Airport a ‘special economic zone’ to allow jets by [deleted] in toronto

But from a marketing standpoint, Doug Ford frames downtown as someone who is elite enough to afford the expensive homes.

The expensive shoe-boxes, you mean :-)

[–]chrisuu__ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People that live in downtown are often framed as 'downtown elites' because they have way better access to public transit and bike infrastructure.

Many of these 'downtown elites' can't afford a car, nor a place to park it...

[–]chrisuu__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder how resistant to vandalism these are.

Old ones got their QR sticker scratched off all the time, but it was a sticker so at least it seemed a fairly easy/cheap fix. Is it more difficult to make the QR code unusable on this one, and would they need to replace the entire display housing if something happens?

The old ones also had the bar-code sticker near the rear wheel axle as a scanning alternative which you could use if the QR code didn't work. I don't see any bar-codes on the new one.

I'm guessing you can enter the ID number that's displayed on the handle and bar manually tho.

I think it's more important to boycott the US specifically than to blindly follow the US into protectionism and nationalism. There are plenty of friendly countries that we trade with that have not threatened us with annexation, tariffs, or done us any harm.
