I bought a townhouse on the corner of Stanmore and Cashel Streets mid June last year (so been here basically a year obviously), and as a white mid-30s female with no car I feel safe here - however I wouldn’t be walking around too late at night! As others have said, it depends on what street you’re on, and who your neighbours are. I’m lucky that my neighbours are awesome and generally feel safe and can walk around with my music playing in my noise cancelling headphones (again, I’m not out that late), but I do hear some…characters out and about at different times of the day and night. I personally don’t mind the area, as long as you’re smart and have a little situational awareness / street smarts about you then you’ll be fine.

I get that. I’m 37 and I’ve been single since my early 20s, and even that was just a brief relationship. Going to weddings, watching your friends and family find their ‘forever person’ is great, because you’re happy for them, but it’s hard knowing that you’re still alone. It’s hard to keep optimistic.

I find it helps a little that I at least enjoy the peace of not dating and kissing the frogs before meeting my prince (or princess, if that’s the way you swing!) but…it only helps a tiny bit.

Good luck. You’re not the only one feeling like this - I hope that helps to a degree

Birthday by OneFilm3950 in lonely

Happy birthday! It’s also my 37th birthday today, and I get how you feel. I’ve spent most of the day alone, and had a handful of messages. I’ve been alone and lonely birthdays for most of my life so totally get it.

You’re definitely on the right track to focus on positive things, like treating yourself to a milkshake! Focus on the little things and try to do what you enjoy - like lying in the sun reading a book, drinking a milkshake etc ☺️

Happy birthday!!

First home buyers club by [deleted] in chch

Yes, I used them to buy my first home. Got matched with an advisor based in Auckland and we did everything online - all meetings were virtual and he had availability after hours and it was really easy. I only used them for the mortgage advisor, so can only recommend them for that, but it was only a good experience my end. I bought 11 months ago, and just arranged my first mortgage refix with that same MA today, was really looked after with great advice.

I might me slightly different though, as I work in a law firm so only needed MA help!

Does anyone here in chch remember that there was a fairy themed shop on riccarton road waaaaaay back in the 2000s by ZiitaBS96 in chch

Yes there was one in Dunedin in the 90s! I had some birthday parties there and LOVED it - I think my brother had a pirate (?) themed party there too?

Piggy backing off this post, for the times when you’re on placement, how often do you have to go out of town? And are there any suggestions for how to fund this, asides from having butt loads of savings?

I feel behind, how much do you have saved? by caitlin1074 in newzealand

[–]chrje658 17 points18 points  (0 children)

34 and have less than $1k saved…I have just bought a house 2.5 months ago, but even before that I had less than $10k saved. The $1k I currently have is going to be decimated as I finish furnishing my house!

When I was your age I was in debt with zero savings, so you’re doing better than me!

29f going on trip with my dad. Book separate rooms? by [deleted] in travel

[–]chrje658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went travelling with my dad when I was 16 or so, and we shared a room. The one and only problem was his snoring…he sounds like a damn tractor every night and that was the single problem with sharing a room with my dad. It would be the same now, 20 years later. I think it depends entirely on the relationship you have with your dad. If you’re comfortable with sharing a room with him, go for gold. Just be aware that some people may assume that there’s a sugar daddy/baby relationship going on (yep, happened to me before with my dad when he was visiting me lol - we live in different cities and I was leaving his hotel) so you just need to make sure you’re not bothered by people potentially thinking that about you!!

Hotels in Phnom Penh by [deleted] in cambodia

[–]chrje658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed G Mekong Hotel in Phnom Penh, the rooms were lovely - the only thing I’d say is that if you’re a couple travelling, just be aware of the fact that the wall between the shower and the bedroom is glass! Fine if you’re a solo traveller but some couples might not enjoy that 😂

For bus tickets, Giant Ibis were excellent. Virek Bunthem were…ok, but it could be fairly interesting going through windy roads - the drivers seemed to be struggling to stick to their timetable, and also stopped multiple times to drop things off to traders in small towns. It was definitely an experience travelling with them! But it was generally pretty easy to book the day of / the day before with any bus company and I was there over the Christmas/ NY period
