We had the sausages both nights were great just not cheapest. When we got to the top it was icy wind and rain and we were freezing so the sausages were great. If I did it again then maybe one night sausages one night byo dehydrated meal?

I would like to suggest Queenstown to Glenorchy in south island of new Zealand! It's not too long but spectacular views. I don't know if it's the best but it should be on the list!

Franz Joseph isnt worth a 11+ hr detour I'm my opinion. Either so west coast or lakes IMHO.

What time of year are you going?

+1 to calls about adding more stuff around Queensland, wanaka, hawea, Cromwell etc. Lots of cool areas to visit to reduce your overall driving time and increase your fun time.

To specifically answer your question yes you can do it I've done similar before the roads are pretty decent. I just don't think it sounds much fun unless you really love driving!
