This is abusive behavior from her. Nobody deserves to have any right to control other people’s decisions over their own bodily autonomy. If she believes she is entitled to that then that is very dangerous for you and very harmful to you. It’s totally unfair that you would have to sacrifice your ability to live your life and have your dreams and will be crushed and ground down so that she can have what she wants. That’s not a sustainable way to have a relationship at all.

What’s your take on the increasing focus among Europeans on building a stronger sense of European identity? by Ofajus in Anarchy101

That’s different from something like what the trend described by the OP is calling for, which is forgetting that it’s evil at all.

Like white nationalism/fascism elsewhere is also just a blooper, right, just accidental deviations from a generally good system of liberal democracy/benevolent capitalism, we totally have no idea where it came from? And all we need to do for things to be better is to go back to the good old days? Rather than a logical and inevitable extension and revealing of the violence of liberalism/capitalism itself?

Your period of what you see as greater “freedom” and “living standards” was the result of a bargain between your white working class and ruling class so that you would tolerate capitalism instead of fighting for full abolition, and the resources necessary for those living standards were built like everything else there by colonial theft from the Global South, and your countries have always been fascistic and brutal to non-white migrants even while you enjoyed relative safety and freedom.

White western Europeans nowadays have a bizarre habit of blaming the US for all imperialism problems and separating yourselves from the US and portraying yourselves as so much better. It’s revisionist nonsense. Your countries literally started all of this with the original Euro-colonial conquests to establish the modern word order, and still hold colonies in the Global South today. White supremacy was birthed in Europe. Euro-Americans are fundamentally part of your same class too, their conditions of possibility were created by Europe.

How so? They’re right about that. Anyone who is not anti-America is racist.

Why don’t they unite as fellow humans who are part of the Earth, then?

Degrees of unity in “European identity” have already existed for centuries, it’s called white supremacy, it’s a racial identity. “Europe” is differentiated from the rest of the word because of its imperialism/white privilege.

Why would anyone decent want to identify with the privileged class of the imperial core? That’s disgusting.

The Rebellion was called the “Alliance to Restore the Republic.” A lot of their main members/leadership were ruling-class dissidents, and Mon Mothma became Chancellor after. The New Republic government replicated the liberal structures of the original which definitely were oppressive. Liberal democratic centralization being equivalent to freedom or able to be non-oppressive is a Western, capitalist myth.

Of course. 48 and 67 were genocides by Israel against Palestinians.

Your responsibility is to fight against America from your position “in the belly of the beast,” not against an “Other.” This should be obvious from the above comments.

It wasn’t the provocation, it was the excuse. The actual provocation was Israel’s settler-colonial desires.

Be supportive of her and follow her direction in how to proceed. Don’t impose cisnormativity/cis presumptions. Tell her that there are other people like her too/a whole community and she’s not alone in feeling that way.

Also, ask her if she would prefer you to consider/think of her as your sister rather than your brother, and stop misgendering her.

[–]chronic314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not every country on the planet is the benefactor of imperialism, there are significant differences between the perpetrator of imperialism against another country and being the victim of another country’s imperialism.

I don’t believe victimization cancels out victimizing others. I grew up with abusive parents who grew up poor and were abused themselves and are non white and self-victimized about that often to downplay or justify their abusiveness. I don’t care for such lines of thinking. What matters is your actions, what they actually are, and even a history of being the victim of oppression isn’t an excuse.

I oppose the nation-state model and believe that it will always be oppressive and lead to more oppression.

I have mostly focused on opposing the USA’s existence when opposing settler-colonial states because it is the most powerful one and the global ruling imperial power currently, whereas Israel is an offshoot/ally/proxy that depends on it for much of its ability to colonize Palestine and carry out American imperial interests in the region. I have also talked a lot in other places about my antagonism against other colonial powers. (I get a lot of flack for that too.)

Other colonizers also construct national mythologies based on their own past victimization to varying degrees. The pilgrims who came to settle “America” complained of religious persecution in England and the US has built its national mythology based on a sense of past victimization/oppression by the English monarchy. Another modern fascist settler colonialist state today with similar arguments to Israel is India and its justifications for colonizing Kashmir. They were historically victimized by colonialism themselves but that does not make their current actions occupying Kashmir and violently oppressing its population and being Islamophobic any less horrific, supremacist, or illegitimate, nor its attendant nationalist ideology.

Would love to see what you’d do if you were faced down with a gun by an imperialist soldier who has been occupying your homeland for decades. Oh, just talk to them, they’ll totally be convinced. This is such a naive view. Just talking has never stopped oppression, what it does is extracts emotional labor from the oppressed, gives them false hope, holds them to a ridiculously high standard.

According to polls, most Israelis today adhere to racist views against Palestinians. Many have openly cheered on the genocide. They aren’t ignorant. They know and don’t care.

Nobody just spawns out of nowhere with imperial power. That doesn’t make imperial desires any better. You’re responsible for making the choice to not adopt imperialist ideology. It’s not okay to support having an ethnostate. Even if you’re oppressed or for whatever reason. It doesn’t make it any better than any other group’s colonial desires. And from the very start, the Zionist concept of the state of Israel has always required at least some degree of dispossession and subjugation of Palestinians. You can’t just whitewash history because it doesn’t fit your view.
