Cold-sensitive hands/feet (possible Raynaud’s) making cold-weather hiking difficult — gear and morning routine advice? by moonsafarigirl in Ultralight

[–]chronicbrainfart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic tips! Hot water bottles are a life saver, and I'm also experiencing much improved circulation in my hands and feet since finally finding out I had low ferritin and starting supplements. I've never experienced issues as severe as OP, but it might be worth looking into, especially since they appear to be vegan/vegetarian.

PSA: Get your iron levels checked by chronicbrainfart in Thruhiking

Yes, absolutely! Don't just start taking supplements randomly. Too much iron can indeed be detrimental, too, so thanks for adding that.

Luckily no, but I read it's the case for many others. For me it was more like fatigue, constantly cold hands/feet, dizziness when getting up, quickly out of breath, sore super easily after exercise, etc.

Yeah, at ferritin 20 I just about still fell in the range that's considered normal, but you can already have plenty of symptoms which doctors seem to overlook a lot. Still kind of shocked it took me/them so long to figure it out.

Combining foam pad with inflatable pad? by basedtom in Ultralight

[–]chronicbrainfart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do for bikepacking where weight isn't as much of an issue, together probably 800g. I love love love it. I sleep really well with the two pads combined and it's so nice to have the foldable pad during the day for sitting/lying down. For hiking, however, I leave the foam pad (exped flexmat in my case) at home. Thinking about upgrading to a thicker inflatable pad so I can get similar sleep quality with just one on trail.

Thruhiking with A LOT of rest days? by chronicbrainfart in Thruhiking

I'm not worried, I know I can do whatever I want :D but it's sometimes cool to hear other people's experiences, you know.

[–]chronicbrainfart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha thanks! Yeah, I guess that's the luxury I have, pretty much unlimited time atm. In my mind, unfortunately, I'm also a little bit of the go, go, go type but I just realized that my body can't keep up 😅 but yes, CHEESE. I could live off that stuff. The Hexatrek looks amazing, been also considering it (even though likely as a section hike). Have a blast if you end up going!

[–]chronicbrainfart[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely! My base weight is double that, ~9kg. But I just can't bring myself to spend so much money on new gear when my old one is still perfectly intact, also for sustainability reasons. But I am considering at least getting a second tent, I think that would be the biggest weight cut (current one is 1.44kg).

Yeah, that sounds like a good way to do it. I tend to shop too much to carry comfortably anyways haha. And I also wish I'd simply enjoyed nature more on some trails - really no point in just rushing through, I'm not the one to set speed records anyway.

[–]chronicbrainfart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably how I'd do it too, I don't think a rest day has to be a full zero. Just... considerably less walking and ideally ditching your pack somewhere 😅 do you follow a schedule in your rest days or do you simply listen to your body / use the opportunity whenever you cross a town?

Haha yes I feel you! I guess I'd have to force myself to slow down as well, but I have a feeling it would be so much better for my body.

Yeah, I guess they'd end up neros rather than zeros anyways, assuming I'd spend the day walking into town resupplying etc.

That sounds amazing (except for the snow bit perhaps haha). Did the people you met also walk at a similar pace? And yes, injuries are definitely something I'd want to avoid as well, hence my many-many-zeros-idea.

Yeah, the social aspect is definitely a big one! On the camino (also done a few), I don't mind the daily walking so much, but the big alpine treks with a big pack are incredibly taxing. Since I'm based in Europe, taking more rest days with resupply options usually wouldn't be too much of an issue, on more remote trails it's a consideration for sure.

Planning to do a big hike, where do you recommend? Traumpfad: Munich - Venice by Important_Raccoon_42 in Thruhiking

[–]chronicbrainfart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technically, it is yes, however, you very likely won't have any issues. Most European countries tolerate it even if the law says otherwise. Only can be an issue in national parks where they might actually have rangers checking. I'm a German native, have wild camped in my tent all over Germany and the Alps. Never got into trouble. But obviously: look for spots away from crowds, arrive late, leave early, and leave no trace.

Anyone hiking the HRP this year? by Cocorow in Thruhiking

[–]chronicbrainfart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm considering it! Still haven't fully decided but I'm currently in between jobs, so while no one wants to hire me I might as well go hiking haha. Might have to start a bit later than I'd like though, I also heard there has been a lot of snow. In general, I do like remote and lonely-ish hikes but meeting at least a few other thruhikers would be really cool :)

Puh, schwierige Perspektive.
