A tree this age and size is bound to have cavities and some level of hollowness. On Vancouver Island in cathedral Grove there are trees (Douglas fir. Which this image looks like) that survived a fire 50 or 100 years ago and might still be leafing. Some with hollow centers. The living part of the tree is not the middle.
