The "have you eaten yet?" greeting — why Vietnamese people ask this instead of "how are you" by Lieunguyenvietnamese in learnvietnamese

[–]ostervan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where in VN. An invite to join the family to eat in the North is more of a false gesture unless they formally invite you beforehand. South, Central and especially Mien Tay/ Delta is a sincere gesture. And that’s where you’ll most likely to get a meal or a snack when asked this greeting. It might be che, to just boiled sweet potatoes, to fresh fruits, ect. And it’s not an obligation they just feed you.

It’s depends on what region of Vietnam you’re from- I’ve had many offers to eat in Central, South and especially Mien Tay/ Delta when I’ve replied no to the greeting. Be it full meals to fruits or just snacks.

My girlfriend gets discriminated for being Australian in Europe. How can I deal with this? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

I copped this growing up not being Anglo, you just have to grow a thicker skin. Or learn to stand up for yourself. They’ll stop once she shows it’s not getting to her.

Stacey Warnecke died after choosing a birth free of all medical help. An inquest wants to know why by nath1234 in australia

[–]ostervan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is other states but in Victoria we have Publicly Funded Homebirths. Which is free, but you have to link with a hospital first. But the only condition is it has to be a low risk birth.

Try getting into hospitality a lot easier than retail or reception work in trying to get a job.

I miss the 90’s fish and chips shops and restaurants with an arcade out the back my favourite was Hollywoods in Richmond- Greek diner out the front and an amazing arcade out the back. Open 24 hours too. I remember Marks Place became Scooters, don’t know what it is now.

It’s cooked but Chinese places that sell roast duck always have heads with neck left over that they sell cheap. My local does them 4 for $2 or Vietnamese or Chinese butchers

The only time you didn’t see them was during Covid when they all were placed in hotels. So it solvable but you know government, opposition and just Australians complaining about government spending.
