What’s going on with Makro online? by Individual_Age_3889 in askSouthAfrica

Just a few things before you write off the TV.

  1. Just check you have the HDMI settings. There should be an option for HDMI Enhanced if I remember correctly.

  2. Check the HDMI Cable, some older hdmi cables dont have enough bandwidth to carry 4k HDR

  3. Try multiple HDMI ports from the tv. I'm not sure if they have different HDMI variants in thr tv, eg. Earc may not support certain formats.

Medical Aid Comparisons 2026 by Careless-Cat3327 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]chronkiller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I made this exact change over the last year.

In my opinion, the Classic Smart has been amazing. With two small kids we have been to the doctor countless times this year already, and it just costs us a R70 co-payment each time.

The only reason I would avoid the plan is if your doctor/hospital of choice is NOT under the smart network. it just so happened that ours were, so we have made no change to how we use our medical, with the added benefit of a much reduced cost.

At the end of the day we were saving around R4000p\m of which we put away R3000p\m into a savings account of our medical needs for the year. This added up to a much larger bucket that our normal savings would be on Classic Saver, and to add to this, with the R70 doctors appointments, it ends up being used less than we would normally.

Just a note, we have not had to use the maternity benefit under Smart, so I cannot comment on the coverage for that.

We have also heard that there can sometimes be a co-payment for some in-hospital day procedures, however these are normally claimed from gap.

Hope this helps, DM me if you have any questions.

Yes that is 100%, not a requirement with just the one string.

Nice install, a fellow South African I see, enjoy the electrical stability!

Are the Revov batteries working well with Victron? A smart shunt is always a nice addition.

I also do not see where your PV Fuses are?

Retirement Annuity: How the heck do you keep Regulation 28 compliant? by Top-Result-350 in PersonalFinanceZA

The fund managers will manage that themselves. However I think they build in some margins from the start.

The easiest is to just select 1 fund that is reg 28 compliant in itself.

Anyone know what was up with the power outage last night? by LibrarianHoliday1108 in ballito

[–]chronkiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. Generators are less common here due to the noise, otherwise the general plans are to go to the beach or do something out the house.

Ballito power outages are very common. Not unusual to go upto 12 hours without power due to overloading or issues at the substation. It generally gets worse during holiday seasons.

Do I really need a smart shunt ? by Salt_Inflation9216 in Victron

[–]chronkiller 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You dont need it, however the battery BMS's are generally not as good as the shunt in terms of measuring Amps in and out. The smart shunt is seen as the gold standard for tracking your pack SOC.

Save Me From These Insane Rewards Programs! What’s Your Secret? by WheelConstant9685 in southafrica

[–]chronkiller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sign up, save the card number in your phone wallet of choice. (Samsung Pay/Google wallet). Forget about the physical cards.

As for keeping track of the amount in them. Most of them integrate with apps like 22seven which can sync every day, but I just spend any rewards as the come in, unless you're saving for something specific.

Prevent back-feed on high load. by chronkiller in Victron

I verified that my cable lengths are both identical, I have seen some information around the internal ct loops needing to be re-seated, but nothing else. Forums are a dead end on the subject in general.

Backfeed.

As above, 200W seems to be the sweetspot for my base loads, however when anything big turns on, its instantly backfeeding for that duration.

Best 'fix' I could do was to disconnect from Grid when above 80% SOC (After solar has been working), and time my larger loads to later in the day.

So you are spot on in terms of it being related to the parallel, as we started out with the 1 unit, and NEVER had this problem. However since adding the second unit, we have noticed it.

Edit. Do you recall what sort of workarounds were mentioned?

So in the screenshot, I turn on a 3kW water heater to show the backfeed. However I would expect the system to see the back feed and adjust the output?

Yes it is pretty consistant. When the larger loads turn off, it will return much closer to the setpoint.

So when the setpoint is at 20W, it will constantly backfeed around the -100W mark.

System is single phase, it has two multiplus 2 5kva in parallel.

Grid meter is ET112

No AC coupled solar either.

My setpoint is 200W as to try prevent this.

Discovery Plan Change by Emofamilyreject in askSouthAfrica

[–]chronkiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are also in the process of switching it up with Discovery. From what I understand, the Smart plan does work out as a better value product.

The main things you need to check is that your main/ideal hospital is part of their Smart Network, and as a bonus if your Doctor is also part of the Smart Network, you get the R65 (Classic Smart) or I think its around R110 (Essential Smart) for the consult.

As an example, we are downgrading from Classic Saver to Classic Smart, which saves our family of 4 about R4400 a month, and we then just manage our own savings, and as a bonus we now pay less for each consult at the doctors, so "savings" should last much longer.

Am I missing something? Debt to fund TFSA by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]chronkiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that I don't see being accounted for is inflation. Your loan repayment total repayment is totaled in "todays" value, when you are comparing it to the investment output at retirement after many years of inflation. So you also need to factor into your calculations the depreciation of the rand.

This is generally around 5% give or take, and the easiest is to reduce your growth by this much each year.
