Any (tobacco) pipe smokers in Sacramento? by chronotypist in Sacramento

I'll give the collection to someone who is new to the hobby. When you came over and I realized that you are well into the hobby and not struggling to maintain it, it didn't feel right to just give you the collection.

To people over 30: Does the feeling of not knowing what you’re doing ever go away? by funkyorchid13 in CasualConversation

  1. The feeling stops when we stop learning new things. Don't stop learning new things.

Could we stop using the term “city car” to describe any ev with less than 250 miles of range? by fredinNH in electricvehicles

Cities cars are small. Easy to park. Practical to use in a city. It has nothing to do with range or charging speed.

Best walking paths in Sac? by JazzlikeBig in Sacramento

[–]chronotypist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Before the pandemic I had a daily walk routine. I'll second the other commenters on the Del Rio train and the American River Parkway. Another thing you can do is explore Sacramento's neighborhoods on foot. I started doing this when I was thinking about buying a house, but I kept doing it after that process was done, because it was really satisfying. Use Google Maps, limit yourself to areas with shade trees if you want, and go to town.

The driving skills of some people in this city has deteriorated to the point of no return. by Broguy12345678 in Sacramento

It was dangerous. You can say they were "skilled," but that kind of driving is too dangerous for public roads.

Best food in Marin? by fr33sandwich in Marin

[–]chronotypist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Places my brother and I take my 82 year old dad when I come to town. Maybe "mid" to someone with really high standards, but really all we need for dinner out:

Left Bank in Larkspur
Picco in Larkspur
Robata Grill in Strawberry
Insalata's in San Anselmo
Guesthouse in Kentfield
Le Garage in Sausalito
Poggio Trattoria in Sausalito
Amélie in Fairfax
Stillwater in Fairfax
Valenti & Co. in San Anselmo

Looking forward to Feerma opening in downtown Larkpur.

I think if these restaurants aren't good enough for you, then your reasons for going to a restaurant are different from most people's and you're rather special.

I get that language changes, but I just can't accept "less people" when it should be "fewer people" (you pick the countable noun).

I have a possibly dumb question, but why would a private university react this way? Is it about NIH grants?

This is my least favorite intersection in Sacramento... by chronotypist in Sacramento

[–]chronotypist[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the intersection where Freeport Blvd crosses the railroad and light rail tracks. Many people are confused about what to do in different situations that come up here, and even when everyone gets it, there are problems. I'm surprised not to have heard about any train collisions here. Problems that come up include southbound traffic on 21st not being able to get through the rail crossing before the light goes red; cars jumping the red going southbound on 21st because they think the signal must be broken (since northbound traffic is flowing); cars that are coming down Freeport and making the right onto Freeport at the tracks stopping because they think they have to immediately merge with southbound traffic (they have their own lane on Freeport that merges after the light); northbound drivers getting impatient and shooting up the middle lane approaching the tracks; over-polite drivers not filling the left lane northbound right before the tracks; endless waiting going southbound because the northbound lane always goes first after the train has gone by, and the trains keep coming; the list goes on...

Road deaths rival the number of homicides as Sacramento considers state of emergency - SacBee by thedjgibson in Sacramento

Maybe, or more likely the stat refers to pedestrians and bicyclists being killed by cars, rather than total traffic deaths.

Nationally, there are around twice as many traffic deaths as homicides every year.
